Title: PI with Malice Aforethought: Tucson Edition
Post by: The Good Reverend Roger on December 02, 2013, 03:43:07 PM
Part 1

The police detective came into the interrogation room, along with a man in That Suit.  Sure enough, the cop says "This is Agent Morris from the Department of Homeland Security.  He and I are going to give you exactly ONE chance to come clean.  What the fuck happened last weekend?"

"Well, it's like this..."

Jenn and Heather had decided on a girl's night out.  No big deal, I figured Jimmy and I could play some first-person shooters or something and let the girls use my car instead of Jimmy's fucked up old truck.  Talk about a hooptie...That truck doesn't get miles per gallon, it gets gallons per mile.  Anyway.  The girls announced that we men were going to drive and fetch drinks.  Okay, no big deal, right?

I knew it was gonna be one of THOSE kinda nights, when Heather announced that Missy was coming along.  I could feel the ice forming in my guts instantly.  Missy, at first glance, is a 95 pound woman, stands about 4'10", with a nice big smile.  What that doesn't tell you is that Missy is a rabid roller derby player, the terror of the rink.  Bigger girls try to knock her over, and suddenly they're over the rail with no idea how they got there.  She wears her skates everywhere she goes.  Probably wears 'em in the shower.

Everyone met at Heather & Jimmy's place, and we had a drink before heading out.  So far, everything seemed normal, but I knew it couldn't last.  The first sign of trouble was when we went out to the parking lot to get in the car.  As we passed Missy's car, I thought I heard something...A thumping and maybe a moan from her trunk.  I stopped.

"What the hell was that?"

"Oh, nobody", Missy replied, "Nobody."

I shrugged, and we all piled into my car.  The ladies were in the back seat, and I didn't even have the car in gear before they had a bottle out.  Good Lord, I thought, this is going to get ugly.  I was right.

A half hour later, we're at the Meetrack.  The girls are going to town on the drinks, and they start feeding them to Jimmy and I.

"Um, I have to drive", I protested.

"We'll just have your daughter pick us up later."

"Are you mad?  Have you seen her drive?"

"Shut up.  Drink."

I downed the shot, and started gasping.  "What the hell was that?"

Heather smiled.  "Whiskey AND."

"Whiskey and what?"

"Whiskey AND."

At some point later, I remember the bartender telling us to get out.  Missy slapped her, and rolled over to our table, and leaned across it towards me, leering.  "Show me", she sang, "to the next whiskey bar".

"Wat"

She slammed her shotglass down on the table and stared at me with this horrible grin.  "I TELL YOU WE MUST DIE."

Heather and Jenn were slapping some hipster around.  The hipster was begging Jimmy and I for help.

"Can't do nothing for ya, man", Jimmy said, putting his jacket on.  We had, after all, just been thrown out, so it would probably be polite to leave.  I figured we'd walk over to 4th avenue, start some trouble there.

"Club Congress", the women shouted.

"On foot?  Fuck that", Jimmy said.

"That's in the Legal District", I added, "The Grabby Girls would have us the moment we stepped off the curb."

"Do we LOOK like we're afraid of the Goddamn Grabby Girls", Jenn asked?

Oh shit.

To be continued.

Awesome.

For what it's worth:

Jenn = Nurse Enabler.
Heather = Sister Gothique.
Missy = Missy, the meanest 95 pounds of iron muscle you or I will ever meet.

I'm gonna do a little exposition on Tucson stuff (Grabby Girls, a couple of other things).

For the 3-4 people who will be arsed to read it.   :lulz:

I'm guessing "grabby girls" is probably different to what I'm thinking.

That said, I think I'm looking forward to finding out.

Baidu.

Thing is, this weird behavior, this voyeuristic behavior, is totally out of control.  I no longer consider PD my primary board anymore - and I'm not alone in this - because it's DEAD.  Plenty of people come here, but they don't DO anything, which is fucking neurotic.

And if you complain about it, people get all pissy.  But it's gotten to the point where you may as well, because it's not like you're stopping traffic.  How could you?  Nobody says ANYTHING anymore, unless there's some kind of fight going on, and even THOSE have dried up.

This isn't PD anymore, and we should probably change the name of the board.  Maybe to "Catatonia Discordia" or "Avoidance Disorders R Us" or maybe "geocities".

Worst part is, we've dropped below the minimum mass of posts required to keep new blood, even if it does show up. Why?  Because some people are butthurt.  Some other people consider this place television.  Other people are just for whatever reason unable or unwilling to say anything.

The reasons don't matter.  What matters is that the place is fucking dead.  And my guess is, it ain't coming back.

Read this at work, just before the final dash to the finish wherein I can't do anything except all the jobs that have to get done at the end of the day that must all be done as late as possible.

I loved it. I think Bowie always makes a fantastic soundtrack to the beginnings of a spiraling descent into hellish madness.

Looking forward to the rest!

Part 2

We walked up 4th Avenue toward the legal district.  Strangely enough, the street was almost deserted...Usually, it's jammed full of college students.  Missy skated in and out of traffic, singing to herself.

"Show me the way to the next little girl..."

The other three were telling jokes, but I wasn't feeling right.  I wasn't drunk, really, I just had this feeling of dread.

"Oh, don't ask why, oh, don't ask why..."

Like the feeling people get before a heart attack, or so I've heard.  A general feeling of hopelessness and doom.

"Oh, don't ask why, oh, don't ask why..."

Suddenly, Missy spun around and skated right for me, her mouth looking like it was full of razor blades.

"For if we don't find the next little girl..."

I threw my hands up defensively, and she bit three of my fingers off.  It hurt like hell, and blood went everywhere.  The pain was so bad I couldn't even scream, I just gasped for breath.

"I tell you we must die..."

She rocked her hips to skate backwards, chewing on my fingers with a grin, blood speckling her face.

"I TELL YOU WE MUST DIE..."

I sort of came to.  My fingers were still attached, and Missy was still skating around passing cars.  Heather and Jenn were looking at me funny; Jimmy was oblivious.

"We're not about to lose you or anything are we, old man?", Heather asked.

"You look a little weird", Jenn added.

"No, no, I'm fine.  I was just thinking, is all."

"Save that for them that can do it", Jenn said with a smirk.

"Har de har har", I responded.

"Here we are", Jimmy said, "the bridge under the tracks, and then we're into the legal district.  Club Congress awaits!

Ahead of us, the darkened underpass gaped like an open grave.

Part 3

The viaduct is really only about as wide as a two lane road, perhaps 30 seconds to walk under.  15 seconds in, though, Jimmy began to freak out.

"How long IS this fucking tunnel?"

"Um, about 150 feet."

"But we've been walking for 15 minutes."

"No, we haven't.  Jimmy, calm yourself.  You know how this place can be."

A moment later, we stepped out of the tunnel...Into the neon glare and sodium light brilliance of the Legal District.  To our left was a Chapel to the Black Madonna.  Heather and Jenn pointed at it.

"We need some churchifying!", Jenn said.

"Yes.  We need sanctification!", Heather responded.  Missy just skated in wide circles.

What could we do?  We went to church.  It was an average church, and old store front repurposed as a shrine.  Next to the bundle of wires and glass that was the icon/altar stood the ubiquitous scowling old man in full regalia, glaring at us with hooded eyes.

"Sup, Padre!", Missy hollered, "We need your services, for we are HEROES!"

"Damn straight", I added, "We are in fact heroes and we come to the district seeking sin."

"So we need to be shriven and blessed first", Heather finished.

The old man just grunted, still scowling, and thumped the side of the icon.  It sprang to life, glowing a dark blue, it's halo sputtering on and off, as it delivered the benediction in a crackling, disjointed voice:

You became as lambs, and were thus shorn.
You beat your swords into plowshares, and were thus enslaved by those who still had swords.
So, come, beat your plowshares into hooks, and I shall make thee fishers of men.

It then made a popping and hissing noise, and went silent (though the halo still sputtered).  We figured that was enough of a blessing for a night out carousing, though, so we left...The old man still scowling at us.

The short service seemed to have allowed Jimmy to get his feet back under him, so we headed down Congress Street toward the club.  We passed an alleyway, and I saw a familiar looking man with Russian features, talking to three working girls.  We nodded at each other, though I didn't remember exactly who he was.

Jimmy asked me something.  I didn't catch it, because I was looking at the Russian guy, so I asked him to repeat it.

"When you were in the army, did you ever know a Sergeant Major Morse?"

"Um, I was never in the army, Jimmy."

"Yes you were."

"No, I thought about it, but my great uncles talked me out of it.  So I went to school and took a PhD in physics.  Tribology, specifically.  The study of friction.  Not very sexy, but it pays the bills."

"Bullshit.  Let me see your stomach."

I pulled my shirt up, and he looked at my stomach.  "Where'd your fucking scar go?"

"What scar?"

"Yesterday, you had a shrapnel scar on your gut."

I looked at him, and pointed back to the bridge.  "That was out there.  Maybe I was a vet with scars out there.  Maybe you were from somewhere out East.  North Carolina, maybe.  But we're in here now, and none of that matters.  You know this."

Heather spoke up, "Hey, guys?"

"Yeah?"

"Shut up.  We are now fishers of men.  haha."

I looked at the women.  Their pupils had shrunk to pin pricks.

"We're going to the club", Jenny said.

"We're going to drink many whiskey", Missy added, "Or we can't be held accountable.  We are fishers of men, and you are men."

What the hell could we do?  We walked down the block, toward the club.

Interlude

Agent Morris looked at the detective.  "What kind of drug-addled nonsense is this?  He needs to come to the point."

The detective looked at Morris.  "Shut up.  No matter why you're here, this is MY precinct and MY interrogation room, and we do things MY way.  And that means we get the WHOLE STORY.

"I can get the whole story out of him a lot quicker."

"Yes, I imagine you think you can.  Me, on the other hand, I want him to want to tell us."

Good cop, bad cop.  Heh.

"I think I need to go talk to the commissioner.  Get this jackass transferred over to me.  Then we'll watch him sing."

"You go right the fuck ahead.  And while you're doing THAT, I'll be getting answers.  If you want answers, you federal prick, you just sit your ass back down and shut the fuck up."

Agent Morris sat down with a scowl on his face.

"Now, sir, please continue your story."

Part 4

As we approached the bar, Jimmy was walking along the roadside, just off the curb.  As he neared a storm drain, I said, "Keep away from the drain, jackass."

"What?  Why?"

"Because this is the legal district.  The Grabby Girls will have your ass."

"What, they live in the sewers?"

"Well, that's just it.  We don't know.  They strike and they disappear, and nobody sees them come and go.  And they always catch their victims by surprise.  The only thing that makes sense is the sewer."

Jimmy gave me a dubious look, but got back up on the curb.

We arrived at the club.  There was no line, it was still a little early for that, so we went in.  Crazy Steve stood behind the bar, turning pale as he saw me.  Holy shit.

"Steve.  I haven't seen you for 8 years.  What the hell are you doing here in Tucson?"

"I don't know, man.  Last month, I was up in Morenci moving a bale of pot, then suddenly I'm here."

"Well, life can be that way.  Set up 10 whiskeys.  Bourbon.  The cheap shit."

"Done and done."

"Man gets thirsty walking over from Drachmann."

"You WALKED?  Are you nuts or something?  No, wait, forget I said that.  Of course you're nuts.  How did you get here in one piece?"

"Just lucky, I guess."

I took the drinks out to the table the girls had chosen, out by where some guy was setting up sound equipment.  Great.  Another shitty band to fuck up our evening...But the girls looked eager.  They were leaning towards the guy with an expectant look on their faces.

"You are of course aware that, this being Tucson, this guy is going to suck ass", I mentioned.

"Yep", Heather said.

"Of course", Jenn added.

"Counting on it", Missy concluded.

Oh, dear.  I buried my face in my whiskey glass, as the poor unsuspecting bastard pulled out a ukelele and began to play some fucked up faux-folk song on it.  I winced at the poor performance, and while I was doing so, it stopped.  I looked up, and the guy was gone.  So where the ladies.  Jimmy was looking around, bewildered.

"SHIT!", I hollered, "The fucking Grabby Girls snagged the ladies!"

We both jumped up, and ran for the front door of the bar, trying to catch a glimpse of anyone or anything running off with the ladies.  There was nothing out front.  We headed back in...And there they were, sitting right where they were before their disappearance.

"What the hell is wrong with YOU two?", Jenn asked, "You just got up and ran like your ass was on fire."

"Um.  Nothing", I said.

"We thought we saw something", Jimmy added.

I picked up my drink again, and had finished half of it, when I noticed that the musician was still missing.

To be continued.

Part 5

As the night went on, the bar got emptier and emptier.  At one point, I went in to get drinks, and Steve was gone.  I hopped over the bar and fixed the drinks, then walked back out.

The patio was empty, except for me.

I sat down and started on the drinks.   I was mostly done with them, when the police cruisers started screeching into the parking lot.

And that's where you guys came in.

Morris looked disgusted.  "This piece of shit is just making this all up.  We have a senator's son and daughter-in-law missing from that bar.  Enough is enough, I'm taking custody of the prisoner."

The police detective sighed, pulled out his pistol, and calmly shot Agent Morris in the face.  Blood and brains spattered all over the wall.

"Thanks, Jimmy", I said, "That guy was an asshole."

"Yeah, and we're late."  He led me to the next interrogation room over, where there were two dresses and two pairs of roller skates.  "Let's hurry up, though...The girls are waiting."

I stripped and put the dress and skates on as fast as I could.

After all, it was Girl's Night Out.

End

Ok only finished part one so far, but wanted to comment while it was fresh in my head.

I love the way you began, story-within-a-story style, in the interrogation room.  That had me thinking "Damn, some shit went DOWN that weekend!" right off the bat and hooked me from the first line.

You have definitely become one of my favorite writers on here.  I don't often post in the threads of the stories I read (though I make sure to post in yours because you ask for feedback), but the more of them I read, the more I notice each person's style of writing and putting the stories together, and appreciate the skill and thought that goes into crafting such interesting stories.

The best part is that there are so many good writers here and many of them are quite prolific, and have been here for so long, so that there are tons and tons of great pieces to read.  Anyway on to part 2 and thank you for yet another awesome story to read =D
