Just because it doesn't rhyme doesn't mean it's not an attempt at poetry.

Some of the worst poetry I've ever read didn't rhyme.

I only come here usually for haiku and word association.

I've been here for like, ten minutes, but maybe there should be one unified poetry thing? I don't think there's a reason to start a new thread every time someone spews out a poem.

It's true!  How could each and every precious gem of a poem get the ridicule it deserves if they were all mushed together?

I was thinking more along the lines of banning poetry completely, banning any user caught posting poetry, and finding their physical location so we can break their fingers so that they may never post (or even write) their shitty poetry anywhere else ever.

we will have to agree to disagree, as I am of the opinion that poetry ALWAYS sucks rancid goat-ass (unless it's discordian haiku, of course). especially whiny, angsty, I'm-a-depressed-teenager-who-doesn't-even-know-how-bad-life-really-sucks type of poetry that seems so common around these parts (and most other parts)

Emo poetry doesnt count as poetry.  Therefore I see no problem.
Title: When did this turn into...
Post by: East Coast Hustle on December 16, 2004, 11:22:43 PM
99% of all poetry is emo poetry.

therein lies the problem.

and most of the other 1% still sucks rancid goat-ass.

kudos to vogon poetry

some of the best i've ever read!

on a less serious note....this DOES happen to be
the "literate chaotic"

poetry, coincidentally being a form of literature, happens
to be posted here. live with it.

or not.

you could peruse over them and never read a word for all i care.
that's kinda the point of art- the artist doesn't really care
anymore about what the public sees, the artist cares about just
the art.

i especially love how you blanket statement everything without
making the slightest query as to what any of them mean.

(as a side note and a plug- Family Album is a series of poems that
i'm going to put to music, detailing the stories of the greek gods- well, the
more sordid stories, at least...)

i do think it would be a neato idea though if we got a poetry
option on the posting (kinda like the sticky/poll options that are
there)

maybe some ideas can come from that

ps...i question that you read any of those poems. i certainly wouldn't
call those peoms "teen angsty".....(unless i was trying to piss someone off
hint hint)

MORE POETRY PLEASE!

Let the illiterate unwashed drown in a sea of verse.

Quote from: David Lehman
Poetry and prose are supposed to be opposites. Poetry is to dancing as prose is to walking, wrote Paul Valery. Poetry is gratuitously beautiful, prose is functional, utilitarian. Or poetry is patrician and prose plebian, pedestrian. Poetry is special, prose is ordinary...

I think in the future, for the benefit of the Turds amongst us, we should
place the word poem in parenthesis after the title of a thread to denote
that the thread contains a poem. And if this practice catches on, I, for
one, intend to put the word (poem) on all my threads, just in case
some wayward discordian poet might possible, sometime in the future,
add a poetic turn of phrase to said thread.

pphhbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbttttttttt!!!!!!!!!!!!!

You're polarizing again. It's not that "poetry" and "prose" are opposite. BAD Poetry is the Opposite of GOOD Poetry. Good Prose is the Opposite of Bad Prose.

Good Poetry and Good Prose can coexist peacefully.

POLARIZING?

You bet your sweet ass I'm polarizing!

The glare in here is blinding me.

POETS OF DISCORDIA ARISE!
THROW OFF THE SHACKLES OF PROSE!
You have nothing to fear but success!
You have nothing to lose but your dignity!
To the Ramparts!
To the Barricades!
To the Bermudas!
To the Triangles!

THIS IS WAR!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Wow, the gnome goes to war.
I've never seen that before

I wonder what will become of him?
Ya think he's been spending time at the gym?

I always knew he was a bookworm.
Don't try and shake him - his resolve is firm.

It's funny, I think, that Chuck (or is it Turd)
Is so upset at the rhymed (or unrhymed) word.

Methinks his sense of poetry is shot;
Must be because he smoked all that pot.

In a related vein, I was poking around Live Journal, and some guy asked what I thought of his (bad) goth poetry (like there's any other kind), and in response I whipped this up off the top of my head (bad poetry alert!)

"Alone, I sit in the darkness,
My own head an echoing chamber of sorrow.
The cold metal parts my skin like a shadowy fin through icy water,
With Her words as the only sound, wailing dirge;
Mirroring my agony at this dismal existence."

Now I need a shower.

I wouldn't dislike poetry, if it didn't suck so bad 99% of the time.

Besides, if you feel the need to put words to rhythm and cadence, why not take the time to learn an instrument and make a song out of it?

poets are just too lazy or unskilled to be musicians.

I take strong exception to the statement that prose is plebian, ordinary, functional, and utilitarian.
Anyone can write a poem - just turn on your Internal Random Bullshit Generator, and make sure the last words of each line rhyme.  And if someone reads it and knows it for bullshit and complains that his time was wasted reading it, that's ok, the poet can simply say, "You just didn't get it, man," like the complainer is as ignorant as a lump of mud and the poet is part of some elite world where the heart feels more deeply and the mind sees more clearly.  Which is, in itself, bullshit.
But there are authors in this world whose prose can reach into your chest like a fist and squeeze your heart dry.  There are times when prose is not only more effective than poetry, it says more, and is harder to say.  How to express in plain words the myriad concepts of the world that there is no one word for?  That's a gift - it's a gift that the author is born with, and a gift given to his readers, both.

Poetry - pffft.

Good poetry isn't about rhyming, or going over everyone's head. Era, I've gotten that "squeeze your heart dry" feeling from both poetry and regular writing. (I do agree that prose isn't a lower form, or whatever)
Both techniques can be used equally incompatently, I think.

Poems that don't suck:

 Any good rap
Poetry My Arse by Brendan Kennelly.
Any Phillip Larkin with gratuitious profanity.
Bob Dylan (pre & post born again suckiness...he may still have some mileage left on him)
Howl by Allen Ginsberg - kind of obvious choice I know...bite me.
Vogon poems - how could you not like 'Oh, Freddled gruntbuggly' as an opening line?
 Discordian Haiku

Poems that suck: Pretty much everything else.

Well, when I think about it, really, the best poets are the dead ones.

Prose is an attempt to persuade you.
Poetry invokes an emotion.

Prose is an art history class.
Poetry paints a picture in your mind.

Prose is the force of intellect.
Poetry forces passion.

Prose is an evening spent alone with old friends.
Poetry suspends a moment in time.

Prose is words written on a page.
Poetry writes in your heart.

Prose is the telling of the story of life.
Poetry lives.

you're all morans.

poetry is poetry; prose is prose.

if it's shitty it's shitty. form is not a measure of shittiness.

I can Hide In Devious Endevors that have every thought

legislation, turning opinion sour; erroneous...enevitable.

Yeah, I had a post written in response to that, but it was undeniably rude.

I maintain my stance that prose is not a lesser form of expression than poetry.  I'll also add that I think poetry is easier to abuse than prose.

Somebody e-mailed this to me. Synchronysity, eh?
musophobist
===========
[Brit. myoo-ZOH-fuh-bist; US myoo-ZAH-fuh-bist] a person who regards poetry with suspicious dislike. From Greek words meaning 'muse' and 'fear'. This word was used (and probably coined) by the poet Algernon Charles Swinburne (1837-1909), who quite possibly inspired more than a few musophobes.

Oh, and chuck-a-commie-turd, You said something about poets being musicians who can't write a song.... Fuck, man, most song lyrics are, in general, some of the most inane shit set to words... they simply do not usually hold up when separated from the music.

yeah, that was kinda my point...if you're gonna write crappy poetry, at least put it to some decent music, so that it won't suck quite as bad...I mean, I fucking LOVE Obituary...but their lyrics are complete and total shit...wouldn't stand for a second on their own...but add some frenetic double-bass drumwork and a lightspeed chunk-ass guitar riff, and bingo, no one cares that the words suck anymore...
