Title: There's no fucking excuse for this shit.

The tanks haven't been inspected since 1991.

There was insufficient secondary containment, and no tertiary containment.  The plant manager and his boss both belong in a prison cell.

Oh, and...

"We have enough regulation"
- John Boehner

Fuck you, John.  Right in the earhole.  Deregulation kills, you sanctimonious bastard.

"But if we just privatize everything, this wouldn't happen. This is proof we don't need the EPA." - Librarians Libertarians.

Everyone has this view of the EPA as omnipresent, jackbooted thugs who wander around trying to shut plants down.

Fact is, they are understaffed, underfunded, and can usually only react to a disaster...Instead of, you know, PREVENTING THEM.

And those right wing assboogers who think that regulation strangles business?  HOW MUCH BUSINESS ARE THEY DOING IN WEST, TEXAS THESE DAYS?  Oh, yeah.  None.  Because they're ALL DEAD.

I can't stand people who say that if left alone, companies would self-regulate, because rational best interest.

LET THE RECORD SHOW OTHERWISE.

Companies ARE left alone.  All the fucking time.  And they very, very rarely self-regulate.

My company does, but not for benevolent reasons.

They've clearly been self-regulating since 1991.

It's just human nature, to try to cut corners to be more "efficient"...

But what NO ONE seems to notice is that there's a difference between true efficiency and heuristics and just half-assing everything.

I work in the social sciences, and that might not lead directly to deaths, but it leads to prejudice and misconceptions which at some point or another do cost lives - we call this negligence.

Now, in the engineerings/industries and etc, the negligence is more direct to deaths.

So we're surrounded by lazy, greedy, cheap and negligent fucks.  :evilmad:

THIS.  It's cheaper, in the medium & long term, to do things properly.

Hey now, downsizing the Environment Agency, the UK equivalent of the EPA, has done wonders for England's economic performance.

I think the problem is more a lack of enforcement than a lack of regulations.  As has been said, the EPA is underfunded and understaffed.

Look people, it is not hard. You can't trust government but you can trust them to keep corporations from getting too powerful. If you are in an arena with Tiger and Bear, step one is to get Tiger and Bear to start fighting eachother.

Yeah, yeah, I know. That is because people skipped step one and tried to jump directly to step infinity, also known as utopia.

They missed.
