I haven't really looked.  When it demanded that I follow 5 blogs, I just searched "privilege" and saw that one, which was my 3rd pick after a GODDAMMIT WE HATE CIS SHITLORDS (or words to that effect) and THIS IS WHITE PRIVILEGE.

I'm digging, and so far it's worse than Facebook.  It's really quite awful.  It's like a school for sociopaths.

Yep.

I am given to believe that Tumblr HAS a TOS agreement, but I can't see any evidence that any materials are restricted or that it's ever enforced at all.

"Additional fun about those Special K ads: If you put a full bowl of Frosties and a full bowl of Special K next to each other there is exactly one calorie difference. The extra one is in the Special K. I despise that product, makes itself out to be healthy (it isn't), tells you you can't be happy without it (you can) and steals from body-positivity projects to sell its complete bollocks."

if you want to make a point about special k being no better than frosties don't use bullshit science to back it up.

Even If you put two full bowls of special K beside each other you are you're going to have more of a discrepancy than "exactly one calorie difference"  let alone when you compare it to a bowl frosties.

I'm REALLY surprised because making an obvious  point in a tenuous,  meandering, off mark or otherwise irritating way certainly isn't characteristic of the tumblr privilege crowd, no not at all.

Are they talking about Frosted Flakes, or some cereal we don't have here and is unfindable in Google? According to the Internet, 1 cup of Frosted Flakes is 147 calories while 1 cup of Special K is 117. I'm not going to deny the exploitative and insecurity-provoking advertising imagery, but flat-out lying kind of undermines whatever point they're trying no make, not to mention that calorie count isn't a good measure of nutritive value, or "healthiness", by any means.

It's the same. For some reason Kellogg's calls them Frosties over in the UK.

I'm afraid the image wont load.

I should probably have given some context for the bartkira project.

Artists are invited to redraw their favourite page of akira with Simpsons characters in place of the originals.

The concept is just a silly game but there have been some incredible submissions by some really talented artists, even some by a few well known artists.

I would suggest that the point is based on Kelloggs own figures, available from their website. This shows comparative data for a set portion portion of each of their products. For Special K & Frosties [Frosted Flakes in the US] the data is for a 30 g portion of cereal plus 125 ml of semi-skimmed milk. The stated difference is indeed 1 calorie. Sorry but I'm not detecting any bullshit science there - oh, except that they got the spare calorie the wrong way round, apparently there are 172 calories in the standard sample of Special K and 173 in Frosties.

Ok so it's quoting the cereal boxes figures. Those are bullshit figures, but I guess in this case they are second hand bullshit figures.

Everyone knows special k and frosties are basically the same unhealthy shit marketed differently. Those who care are probably eating something that is 90 percent grain with no sugar.

It's not the outrage over the cereal differences, I agree with a lot of that. It's the pedantry (if that's a word).

Weird, in the US they are two very distinctly different cereals.

I have no idea what crunchy nut cornflakes are. Here, frosted flakes are basically cornflakes that have been hosed with a buttload of sugar (both cornflakes and Frosted Flakes belong to a category I call "yellow cereal"), while Special K doesn't have any corn and is less sugary, more like Wheaties (a larger category I call "brown cereal").

There is also white cereal. It's made out of rice and tastes like air.

Special K, crunchy nut cornflakes and frosties are all basically all the same thing give or take a small handful of sugar.

Maybe I'm mixing up special k with frosties.
We have pretty much the same selection, rice crispies and cocopops with zero nutritional value and will leave you hungry an hour later.
Cornflakes, frosties and the like, high in sugar but better for you than the rice stuff.

And then the wholegrain and wheat stuff which tastes bad for a week and suddenly starts tasting amazing after that.

Special K (in the US) is basically a wheat bran flake that's been lightly coated in sugar. Less sugar than Frosted Flakes though, more of a clear glaze than a white frost.

I noticed that on the labels here, the portions are listed differently. The calories-per-portion of Special K is for 1 cup (dry), whereas for Frosted Flakes it's 3/4 cup (dry), making it look at first glance as if they have nearly identical calorie counts.

I imagine MMIX will chime in shortly to try to make at least one of us WRONG again, as that is, apparently, the only time she ever posts.

Seriously, EFO has tried being bi, being gay, being transgender, being agender, drinking, asking for a facial piercing (which I said yes to and she never got) and smoking pot, and none of them caused me to freak out or really be anything but supportive and offer sensible advice. Tumblr, though, and drinking soda, those two things just send me to a dark and angry place.

"Dox"ing, or "To Dox" is recent internet slang for "Documenting" some-one life details & posting them somewhere anyone can get to. If you've heard of this recent BitCoin/Satoshi Nakamoto thing... he was "dox"ed (or at least, some-one with the name "Dorian Satoshi Nakamoto" was doxxed by NewsWeek magazine, and now the whole internet knows where he lives, even if he's not the inventor of BitCoin). It's what those idiots spags tried to do when they got your old man's address instead & generally considered a dick move.

It is because most of the people on Tumblr are either literally or mentally about 12 years old, and any insults they come up with are therefore likely to be some kind of variation on poo-poo-head.

You know, the funniest one is the thisisthinprivilege one that Alty pointed out.  Not because they're fat, of course, but because listening to them, you'd think that fat people are in exactly the same boat as, say, Blacks.

Quote of the day (caps not mine):  "THIN PEOPLE DO NOT GET TO TELL FAT PEOPLE WHAT IS AND ISN'T FAT SHAMING."

This was in the middle of a rather long rant about how unfair the universe is.

"There are a lot of doctors out there who suck at their fucking jobs, and all they diagnose a fat person with is being fat. No fucking shit, asshole. I have had better luck diagnosing myself with Google that I'm gotten out of most doctors. Doctors refuse to help fat people ON THE REGULAR, and we fucking know it. We have LIVED it."

Sounds like Goddamn Chuck D sounding off about cops beating someone to death.

Meanwhile, fat shaming is very, very prevalent in our culture. It is fully socially acceptable. Doctors do in fact cause people harm by making assumptions about their weight and their body type. Whether those people on thisisthinprivilege are correct on each point they try to make or not, the bias and dangerous results thereof do exist.

One example I can think of is the person who wrote about being given diabetes medication when they did not have diabetes. Doctors make many mistakes in the course of their work, and those related to weight are not the only ones, but the combined effect of our cultures propensity for judging people by their weight and those kinds of mistakes, I think, may amplify those mistakes in that particular segment of the populace.

Am I the only one that finds this ridiculous?

Well, between the bellowed complaints and the utter hostility to anyone not of their particular oppressed set, I find myself not caring.  More often laughing.

Not about the various problems, mind you, but about the people on tumblr itself.  Hell, if it hadn't been for the big privilege blowup here, I'd assume that anyone discussing it was Garbo or tumblr or whatever, and just walk away and never care about the issue itself.  Fortunately, we had some sane people here that managed to walk us all past the crazy.

The problem I have with the whole "fat acceptance activism" thing is that while I agree that fat people should not be deprived of rights, I disagree that being fat is an inborn orientation. It is a consequence of a number of health choices, of a mental disorder, or in rare cases of a physical disorder, and it is not healthy, nor is acceptance a particularly good idea. Consider "alcoholism acceptance" or perhaps "poor dental hygiene acceptance" or "anti-vaccination acceptance" for contrast.

I say that even though I have a child who is fat, and I don't want her to experience social ostracization for being fat, but at the same time I don't want her to give in to the easy temptation of deciding that being fat is totally fine and she shouldn't bother with exercise or changing her diet. Because IT WILL KILL HER.

For that matter, I'm about 15 pounds overweight, and even though that's not a lot it's enough that it's negatively impacting my health. If I lose the weight I'll probably also lose my hypertension. Which obviously hasn't been enough to make me get to it yet, but my efforts have at least stopped me from gaining any MORE weight.

My problem with it is that tumblrites confuse "not being a dick" with "fat acceptance" with "healthy at any size", the latter of which is a dangerous and pernicious set of beliefs which tell fat people they're not really unhealthy and allow them to perpetuate a dangerous lifestyle.

The way I see it, it's the usual case of everything either being one ridiculous extreme or the other. Either fat people are mocked and ridiculed and discriminated against or fat is just as beautiful as athletic and there's nothing wrong with it and we need more positive fat role models so children know there's nothing wrong with sitting on a sofa all day, stuffing your face full of cheeseburgers.

Truth is being fat is really really bad for you and this should be probably be impressed on everyone, without giving the poor bastards who suffer from it a hard time about it.

The other thing that bugs me (one of my hobby horses) is that weight and bulk and diet is not what's wrong. Diet maybe within reason, you need a decent balance and avoid consuming too much toxic material but how much you eat means virtually nothing when compared to your overall level of fitness and this requires regular exercise.

The message has become a bit clearer in recent years but a lot of revolving door weight watcher programs still stress diet first and tag "going for a walk occasionally" as an afterthought. Sure, cutting back on carbs, will give a useful initial boost but building a healthy muscle mass and metabolism is the main event.

Being fit seems like hard work when your used to sitting on your arse all day. When you're in shape, hard work is something you crave.

At the end of the day, like smoking or drinking, it's a lifestyle choice. If you're happy weighing half a ton and living a decade or two less than you normally would, who the fuck am I to say it's not your right? What pisses me off is people who aren't happy with their physical condition telling me I'm fucking lucky. Like, "yeah, buddy, I'm lucky I got a body that does what you train it to do, same as everyone else on the goddamn planet"  :argh!:

... and breathe

the condition of one white dude being treated as somehow worthy of the attention and money of complete strangers, as if this is a good charitable cause to contribute to

fuck brandon boyer and fuck anyone who gives him money

(i don't blame boyer for having cancer and i wouldn't blame him for appealing to friends or family for help with the treatment and coping with it, my problem is with making it a giant public event, as if he's a saint who deserves the love and attention of everyone it's disgustingly privileged)

Our wonderful example of humanity wanders by and states:

Bump

http://www.thenation.com/blog/179160/cancelcolbert-and-return-anti-liberal-left

QuoteRecently, we've seen the calls to #CancelColbert because of something outrageous said by Stephen Colbert's blowhard alter ego, who has been saying outrageous things regularly for nine years. Then there's the sudden demand for "trigger warnings" on college syllabi, meant to protect students from encountering ideas or images that may traumatize them; an Oberlin faculty document even suggests jettisoning "triggering material when it does not contribute directly to the course learning goals." At Wellesley, students have petitioned to have an outdoor statue of a lifelike sleepwalking man removed because it was causing them "undue stress." As I wrote in The Nation, there's pressure in some circles not to use the word "vagina" in connection with reproductive rights, lest it offend trans people.

I don't agree with everything Goldberg says, though I don't have the time to go into the exact reasons why. Well, OK, I'm not comfortable with her conflating "anti-liberal left" with the left overall, and I'm not sure that's the correct ideological prognosis in the first place.  If you were to ask me, I'd say this attitude is more a mixture of social liberalism with postmodern identity politics than "leftism" as it's currently understood.

But still, I think it's worth a read.  The above paragraph was interesting, as was the observation of how freedom of speech tends to be only highly valued when conservatives are in power.  It's also backed up, to some degree, by this observation by Freddie de Boer (http://fredrikdeboer.com/2014/03/25/an-addendum-on-social-justice-and-free-expression/#rssowlmlink):

QuotePlease believe me when I say: it is not at all unusual, for me, to encounter liberals and leftists who speak out about issues of social justice like feminism and racism and similar who do not believe that controversial speech (what they call hate speech) should be legally expressible. You are free to question how prevalent that view is. But I encounter it all the time, and not just online. Being in a PhD program in the humanities, I have regular exposure to people who feel that the right to free expression does not or should not include racist, sexist, or homophobic ideas. And their definition of racism, sexism, and homophobia tends to be expansive. Indeed, I was motivated to write in large part because I just came from a large, national conference. I met lots of cool people, like I always do, and came away inspired, as I always do. But I was also disturbed, because of the casual way in which some people asserted their belief that people who express beliefs they abhor– that I abhor, that I hope all good people abhor– should be shouted down, should be coerced into silence, should be barred from entry into public forums, should be legally or otherwise prevented from expressing those beliefs.

QuoteAcademic left-wing culture frequently is a leading indicator of the broader social justice left. I am not at all saying that left-wing ideas only come from college campuses, but there is little doubt that academics help to popularize and spread fashionable political ideas. They were talking about intersectionality on college campuses long before there existed the social media spaces where such talk is now ubiquitous. Sometimes, this tendency of campus politics to lead to broader discussion is an unmitigated good, such as in the nascent movement for trans rights, which again was not started on campus but which has benefited from discussion and advocacy on college campuses. Sometimes, this tendency leaves me ambivalent. I am happy that talk of privilege has become widespread, because it's essential that we understand the ways in which systematic inequalities shape our world; at the same time, as privilege talk has become unavoidable, it has lost much of its meaning and descended into a signalling mechanism of a certain strata of our postcollegiate professionals.

I spent a year at Oberlin in 1990, and this was something that was building, even then; but it was self-contained, because Oberlin was in the middle of nowhere. The OP makes a lot of sense when you consider those students are now of the age to be in somewhat greater positions of power, and then the addition of technology sets the whole thing ablaze.

Oberlin is an ultra-liberal college with a high tuition, in an echo chamber.  Her show "Girls" is an alternate view of what we just went through with FernandoPoo: a look at how people in their 20s are functionally psychotic. What's funny about that question is that the journalism major who asked it will most likely be paralleling that behavior when s/he graduates.

I'd guess so, but they have the tone down just right.  If they'd done a bit more work, more posts, it probably would've fooled me.

Incidentally, the whole "truscum" thing still kinda bothers me.  I think the implication is that if you think dysphoria is a necessary precondition to being transgender (which I would say it probably is) then you are Othering transsexuals as having a mental illness (which seems like a leap in the logic) and therefore are scum (probably true, but not necessarily for that reason).

I still don't know where the "tru" bit comes from, though.  Mainly because whenever I try to ask anyone, I get told "it's not my job to educate you".

The heroin needle practically fell out of my arm. "What kind of monster would do something like that? Bitcoins are the ultimate currency: virtual, anonymous, stateless. They represent true economic freedom, not subject to arbitrary manipulation by any government. Do we have any leads?"

"Not yet. But mark my words: we're going to figure out who did this and we're going to take them down ... provided someone pays us a fair market rate to do so."

"Easy, chief," I said. "Any rate the market offers is, by definition, fair."

He laughed. "That's why you're the best I got, Lisowski. Now you get out there and find those bitcoins."

"Don't worry," I said. "I'm on it."

I put a quarter in the siren. Ten minutes later, I was on the scene. It was a normal office building, strangled on all sides by public sidewalks. I hopped over them and went inside.

"Home Depot™ Presents the Police!®" I said, flashing my badge and my gun and a small picture of Ron Paul. "Nobody move unless you want to!" They didn't.

"Now, which one of you punks is going to pay me to investigate this crime?" No one spoke up.

"Come on," I said. "Don't you all understand that the protection of private property is the foundation of all personal liberty?"

It didn't seem like they did.

"Seriously, guys. Without a strong economic motivator, I'm just going to stand here and not solve this case. Cash is fine, but I prefer being paid in gold bullion or autographed Penn Jillette posters."

Nothing. These people were stonewalling me. It almost seemed like they didn't care that a fortune in computer money invented to buy drugs was missing.

I figured I could wait them out. I lit several cigarettes indoors. A pregnant lady coughed, and I told her that secondhand smoke is a myth. Just then, a man in glasses made a break for it.

"Subway™ Eat Fresh and Freeze, Scumbag!®" I yelled.

Too late. He was already out the front door. I went after him.

"Stop right there!" I yelled as I ran. He was faster than me because I always try to avoid stepping on public sidewalks. Our country needs a private-sidewalk voucher system, but, thanks to the incestuous interplay between our corrupt federal government and the public-sidewalk lobby, it will never happen.

I was losing him. "Listen, I'll pay you to stop!" I yelled. "What would you consider an appropriate price point for stopping? I'll offer you a thirteenth of an ounce of gold and a gently worn 'Bob Barr '08' extra-large long-sleeved men's T-shirt!"

He turned. In his hand was a revolver that the Constitution said he had every right to own. He fired at me and missed. I pulled my own gun, put a quarter in it, and fired back. The bullet lodged in a U.S.P.S. mailbox less than a foot from his head. I shot the mailbox again, on purpose.

"All right, all right!" the man yelled, throwing down his weapon. "I give up, cop! I confess: I took the bitcoins."

"Why'd you do it?" I asked, as I slapped a pair of Oikos™ Greek Yogurt Presents Handcuffs® on the guy.

"Because I was afraid."

"Afraid?"

"Afraid of an economic future free from the pernicious meddling of central bankers," he said. "I'm a central banker."

I wanted to coldcock the guy. Years ago, a central banker killed my partner. Instead, I shook my head.

"Let this be a message to all your central-banker friends out on the street," I said. "No matter how many bitcoins you steal, you'll never take away the dream of an open society based on the principles of personal and economic freedom."

He nodded, because he knew I was right. Then he swiped his credit card to pay me for arresting him.

So, after some considerable absence, I went back on tumblr today and discovered "nan0gender".

I would like to think this is a parody, like the ones that 4chan has been seeding over twitter for the past six months (but was only discovered the other week), but even if it is, people are defending it (http://transbakura.tumblr.com/post/89324084855/hagakura-only-on-tumblr-will-someone-invent-a).

One day I will see a bell curve, nyquist plot or gantt chart of someone's gender.

My gender can only be expressed with hyperbolic manifolds. Please check your Euclidean privilege.

This is beautiful:

QuoteI was shooting heroin and reading "The Fountainhead" in the front seat of my privately owned police cruiser when a call came in. I put a quarter in the radio to activate it. It was the chief.

"Bad news, detective. We got a situation."

"What? Is the mayor trying to ban trans fats again?"

"Worse. Somebody just stole four hundred and forty-seven million dollars' worth of bitcoins."

The heroin needle practically fell out of my arm. "What kind of monster would do something like that? Bitcoins are the ultimate currency: virtual, anonymous, stateless. They represent true economic freedom, not subject to arbitrary manipulation by any government. Do we have any leads?"

Probably a parody, but still.
I can think up several good attacks on our culture's position regarding cleanliness but they take it waaay too far.
