Who the fuck are Comcast?
ETA: Ah: so you guys do have an equivalent of Rupert Murdoch? :lulz:
Comcast are the internet monopoly in the Northeast US. They are the devil.

Who the fuck are Comcast?
Think Martin Bormann dressed in Maggie Thatcher's knickers.
I have to say, even though I'm really not a fan of Google, I do find the idea of them slapping Comcast around and making them cry with this to be...well, rather delicious.
I'd also love to see them try to stop it happening, given that the fibre will end up laid. At that point market forces will be forming a demand-tsunami. All the corporations and governments in the known universe couldn't bring enough clout to bear on that, if they worked in unison.
Out of interest - is comcast bigger than Google?

I'm not exactly a fan but I do see them as one of the best in a bad bunch. Doesn't mean they're not shady corporate, money grabbing wanks, just that, in a world where that's the baseline they appear (at least) significantly less fucking horrible than most of the rest. For this reason I'd prefer they were supplying my ... whatever ...

In terms of infrastructure, probably much much bigger. They are in the process of trying to merge with Time-Warner, which is the second biggest cable provider in the U.S. And they already own NBC - Universal, which puts them in charge of several TV networks and a movie studio. Basically, yeah, a behemoth.
Also well known for their shenanigans. My personal favorite is how they used ALEC to lobby states to pass laws that make it illegal for cities to start their own fiber networks. Basically, they won't run fast connections in areas where they don't see a favorable return on investment, but when those cities say, "fuck it, we'll sell bonds and build our own network," they run to state legislatures and get them to shut it down.
In terms of value, though, they aren't even close to Google. I'm thinking this would give Google all the muscle they need if Comcast tries to fuck with them (which would be HIGH-LARIOUS).
Also, Google Fiber is already up and delivering in Kansas City, and hopefully, making its next stop here in Portland. $70/month for 10 gig? Yes, please. Hell, even grandma can pay $300 one time and end up with 5 mbps for 7 years. That works out to about $3.57/month. Yeah, I can see Comcast having a
slight issue with that.

Yep. The fuckers killed Skynet in Tucson.

Not as much went up against. Just the way it turned out between the two over the whole Dos thing. Just a vague comparison. Out with the old, in with the new - kinda deal.
I have to move to AUSTIN to get this shit! AUSTIN FUCKING TEXAS! Home of the info warrior himself!

That was apple. IBM didn't think there would be any money in software, so they had Gates do it so they could all get rich making desk tops.

That was what I was talking about. I always saw that deal as being gates just ripping the rug out from under IBM. They didn't even understand what was happening but he stitched them up. Gates new exactly where the money was and e pulled it out from under the leviathan's nose.
This will play out a different way but it's essentially the same loaded game that only one of the players even understands.

No, it was more that they went looking for a vendor. They really, really didn't want to touch software.
There was even a very vocal segment of their board that said PCs were a fad and they should stick to electric typerwriters.
The way I see it is, if there's two sides striking a deal with the potential to make one side or the other billions of dollars, the one who walks away with the keys to the piggy bank is the winner. You're right. Some of the management didn't even think PC's would be a thing. That's how behind the ball they were. International Business Machines had absolutely no fucking idea what a business machine was at that point in their history. If they'd been anywhere near the business machine ballpark they would have secured exclusive rights to dos but, even then, I'm betting they wouldn't have had the sense to sell it to their "competition". In a sense, IBM gave away Microsoft.

Well, sure. They owned the rights to the kernel. Which they GAVE to Bill Gates. Free & clear. Not just the right to use it, the rights to it in total.
Which was kind of like the Russians selling Alaska to America for a few bucks, back in the day.

So my original comment was a kind of vague, comparison of the different levels of acumen that's about to go head to head. Only, this time, the leviathan aint up against some college kid that knows how to hack Basic
