WHEN I BECOME MANIC, WHICH IS TECHNICALLY MORE WOMANIC.
Basically, the message is that if you're an art-school student, fuck you, you're going to jail. Your weird art is going to be treated as terrorism.
Really? I thought the message is, "If you leave a backpack with a pressure cooker in the same location as the bombing the night of the memorial service, you'll be arrested, even if you claim it's art."

No, he's not attractive enough, and probably not rich enough.
And his hair looks like he got mugged with a handful of shortening.
That video has sealed his fate, in any case, even if the idea of a FAKE BOMB PLANTED DURING A MEMORIAL SERVICE FOR A REAL BOMB doesn't do the trick, which it will.

Yeah, it's not exactly like it was that Aqua Teen Hunger Force ad campaign. The kid made it look like there was a bomb with the intent to be interpreted as a bomb. If calling a fake bomb threat is is illegal, a poor excuse at performance art that involves fake bombs also is.

I think her point is that, fair or not, that will be the outcome. It's probably true. Even if MassArt won't give him the boot, it's not a cheap school (11k a semester, and that's for MA residents- it says he's from Wakefield), and I don't see him getting any government grants to cover that from this point on.

Ah, my mistake. It is bullshit. Everywhere has a college student that does something stupid enough to be newsworthy every year. Shit, last year some kid at Harvard called in a bomb threat because he didn't want to fail his midterm. Well, he succeeded in that, but he didn't think the whole thing through. Why would he? He's a kid.
Both dudes should have known better, but neither of those are mature acts. It's something that you'd think a teenager would think was a good idea.
The kid's stupid enough his later life is probably going to be a mess anyway. He doesn't need the state to aid in that.
Shit, a fine and a public apology would be a sufficient punishment, IMO. He was an idiot, but 5 years in prison? Can't say I'd be comfortable in a society which deems that acceptable, even given the spectacular idiocy on show.

If he's convicted of a felony, he loses all eligibility for any federal financial aid. I don't think it's terribly fair, but this is what's going to happen. The system is designed to recycle, yes, but there's not a school in New England that's going to want to have him after this stunt. The kid's future is inevitably fucked. Howling for blood because you're scared is the same as howling for blood because you're angry or you hate or anything else. We're human beings, not cows. Unless you're on fire, there's no reason not to wait for the facts.

Whoa, whoa, whoa.
My stance has been, "Christ, what an asshole." I don't want him to be hurt, or have his life ruined permanently by the system. I also disagree with those who want him to burn.
But it's completely unfair to say that first responders over reacted when it initially happened and they should have known it was a harmless art prank.

Other thing is, I didn't see a lot of people actually howling for blood in this thread.
I saw people (myself included) making predictions on police reactions, etc, but nobody demanding the kid be bastinadoed. There is a difference between stating a prediction and hoping that it actually happens.
I don't know exactly what you guys are responding to, but my posts were in response to the kid being arrested and charged with terrorism.
FROM WHAT I HAVE SEEN, I don't think the police acted inappropriately. They didn't thrash the kid in the street (again, incomplete information) or in the cells.
But when he is sent to a psychologist to determine his condition, rather than being held in a mental institution pending judicial action/arraignment, it means they're trying to prove that he was competent, so they can fuck him into prison for 35 years. So, you know...

You were a bit vehement. Made me defensive.

QuoteThe first clue that something was amiss Tuesday came when a police officer spotted a man with a backpack walking barefoot in the rain down Boylston Street. Police said he became very vocal and started yelling.
When asked what was in the backpack, the man told the officer it was a rice cooker, Boston Police Superintendent Randy Halstead said.
"We looked into the backpack, saw that it was what appeared to be a rice cooker, had the individual take the knapsack off, drop it on the street, and he was taken into custody," Halstead said.
So that's my timeline question resolved.

Good enough. Until there's another version.
After all, it's cops talking, here. And you can believe me when I say that you never, ever trust a cop's testimony.
I don't blame them for taking him into custody, at all. The whole "TURRISM" thing, though... dunno about that.

This is what the American people bought when they decided to have a national nervous breakdown in 2001.
They also bought the TSA and pervert machines, domestic spying, drones, and "national security" being a free pass on an even larger scale than in the 80s. Or even the 50s.

Also, the proper response:
Take him into custody. Dispose of the bag. Take him to a secure mental facility, turn the docs loose on him, find out what's wrong. There's ALWAYS time later to prosecute, if there's something worth prosecuting him.
But now they HAVE to prosecute him, or their dicks will shrivel right up.

I think that one of the things about it that dismays me a bit is that a lot of both the art and the protest of the 20th century would now be prosecutable as terrorism.

Most of it, actually. They'd have shot Abbie Hoffman out of hand.

Yeah, it's. I mean. Well, the 20th century was horrible. But this is also horrible, in a different way. We live in an era of pre-approved protests and art that has to be run past the authorities in advance. Maybe this is what it looks like to approach true civility?

It's bad, but it's still better than the mechanized brutality and mass murder of 20C. So far.

Yeah, I am willing to accept that it might be a side-effect of progress that I am simply unprepared for.

QuoteA 25-year-old man who describes himself as a performance artist was ordered held for evaluation in a psychiatric facility Wednesday after he was charged with carrying a hoax explosive device near the finish line of the Boston Marathon hours after a ceremony commemorating last year's deadly bombing.
Kevin "Kayvon" Edson was arraigned in Boston Municipal Court on Wednesday. Judge Michael Coyne set bail at $100,000 and ordered Edson sent to Bridgewater State Hospital for evaluation, Jake Wark, a spokesman for the Suffolk County district attorney's office in Boston, told the Los Angeles Times.

For evaluation. It's a code, of sorts.
