Title: Obligatory Donald Sterling Thread?

In case anyone missed it: the owner of a successful basketball team said some awful racist shit to his mistress, which she recorded and sold to TMZ. It went public, and now there's DRAMA.

What I find interesting is the possibility that the guy is actually in the beginning stages of dementia. Nigel's thread about stupid/retarded got my wheels turning on that point, and if you listen to the interviews he's given it's a very real possibility. How on earth does a responsible society deal with someone who has money & power, and is both racist and crazy? Can we hold racist thoughts and speech against someone who isn't operating at full capacity? Will this whole affair seem ghoulish when he starts getting mental health services?

In the best possible version of the future,

when somebody says something shitty, instead of making an apology, they intentionally try to come off as mentally unstable

Let's forgive this guy for his shitty comments, in hopes of creating a world where racism is just one of those harmless things that legitimately crazy people believe.

It's not harmless when it's something that people with money and power believe and act on.

It's either an argument against being batshit or an argument against money and power.

Together the problems associated with each may be compounded but there's no implementable solution to either, right now.

I thought it was awesome what Kareem Abdul Jabar said about the whole issue, which is that Sterling has a demonstrable history of racist behavior going back years, and nobody said a damn thing. What got people to act on it is the recording of the man, unknown to him, in the privacy of his own home, by a person he presumably, to some degree, trusted.

Because the things he said here are cartoon villain racist, instead of the garden variety we expect? Because suddenly it's got nads and we can kick them?

Not saying that excuses the hypocrisy, but maybe it's close to the explanation? Also I am punctuating everything with question marks because I am a 14 year old girl?
