I have no useful advice.  Except maybe track down Verthaine and ask him what's good.

If I recall, ECH and LMNO both had some tips for the city.

Have fun, Burns!

Go to Bourbon Streen once, and only once on your first night, and then never go back there again.  You are required to see the horror, but you are not required to stay there.

Go to Frenchman Street, and stay there for as long as you possibly can.

ECH can give you tips on getting out of the quarter and going Uptown.

Things you really won't see or get anywhere else, so get them while you can: A second line. A Bounce show. The Cajun Bloody Mary at the Gazebo.  Oysters at Felix's (stand at the bar and eat them the moment after they're shucked). Asking Chris McMillian at Kingfish to make whatever kind of drink he wants for you.  A muffaletta at the Central Grocery.  A Ferdie PoBoy with Debris at Mothers. Lafayette Cemetery No 1 in the Garden District.  Frozen Cafe Ole and Bignets at Cafe Du Monde.  At least one (1) dinner that costs more than $100 (I can provide a list of my favorites). At least one (1) breakfast at 3:00AM at Clover Grill that costs less than $5.00.  A Lucky Dog.

No secret knowledge here. BUT I've been to New Orleans. The heat was marvelous. I have been to few places that I have felt so comfortably well. I had no ridiculous drowsiness or pain the whole time we were there, four days.  :)  My friend and I had gone down the week of the international food convention, completely missing the doctors' conference a week later. The only thing I found impossibly difficult was that every single building blasted the AC beyond the point of comfort for me. I learned that though I could carry a survival bag with my snowsuit I wasn't going to be able to wear much in the way of fashion.  My friend, however, loved the AC and was only concerned about getting her battery operated wheelchair in and out of areas already crowded with people. Also, haha, I was not allowed out after ten. Mind you, I was there as a companion/help, and not really interested in partying away two blocks down on Bourbon Street. We stayed at one of the most beautiful hotels I'd ever seen, Hotel Chateau Dupre. The language, which most informed me would be predominantly French, was NOT and when taxis picked us up for anything outside of the French Quarter, I became more alert to the fact that I could not understand the constant ranting they do on their phones the whole damned time we rode, be it morning, day or night.

All in all, it's an amazingly beautiful place. They had done a lot of remarkable work after the storms and even when we ventured outside of the French Quarter, the people were always hospitable, warm and personable. The influence of the cultural differences and the architectural designs had me in awe to the point that I didn't even read a chapter from within any of the three books I brought for the four day trip.

I hope it goes well for you newlyweds. Just be sure to pack heavier if either one of you struggle with direct AC flow.

Even after 15 years of marriage I marvel at how little hubby and I really know one another, though... so maybe such a "freshness" will help renew your relationship and allow the both of you to feel like newlyweds.  :)  Its always fun to pretend, too, accordingly.

They offer lots of tour packages and though I stuck with my friend and we attended every ghost hunting tour offered, they have several that could introduce areas outside of the more immediate surroundings and that might give you the initiative to explore more without the guides.

My friend and I may go back soon. We have been discussing it but we have a seminar coming up and then in March of 2015 I hope to attend a week long seminar. Im certain to not get the time off from the front office to be gone while we have patients, so its only being considered at this point.

Please let us know how well you enjoyed it. Its such a beautifully nostalgic place.

Your milage may vary, but every "Ghost" or "Cemetary" tour I've taken there have been kind of crap, and we've invariably drifted away to some dark corner of the quarter to get a drink.  A decent local history book and a map would serve you better.

Ooooh!  You have to go get the red beans and rice at Coops.  There's a line out the door for a reason.

Okay! did the bourbon street thing...and i see what you mean by 'the horror'. The burlesque show was wonderful and the token queen was fabulous..but i gotta say the best part was watching the folks from....oh let's say Wisconsin...cringe their way through the show. It was like this subtle dilemma between "oh i want to get my 20 bux worth" and "this androgynous spectacle makes me uncomfortable".  Meanwhile we're hooting and hollering.  It was marvelous. We even stayed for the all-male review which was as expected and just as wonderful.  They even had a token hipster soldier bit which was my favorite.  We some how found ourselves in marie laveaux's and decided it was better to spend our money there while sober.  Amazingly we made our way back to the hotel.  Now i must stop typing becuause i don't think the wife wants PD to be privy about what is to happen next.

Really, sometimes it seems your responses are a bit catty.  :(  I was merely responding in kind. Do I really disclose so much personal stuff? To what magnitude? Most of the things I convey seem pretty average and completely common, which makes, for all the wordy detail, saying much very little in retrospect. Incase I've offended you with a writer's flare, to put it simply, I've said a lot to share so little.

I've noticed the anonymity most posters retain. While I don't participate online solely for attention, I do appreciate the interaction.

The internet is an important tool in networking. If you have further concerns or complaints, so that we don't clog up board threads with my tediously defensive responses, PM me.

Hahahaha! OMG. There was no Burlesque show while we were there.  :(  Instead, we did see a Zydeco band. Very lively and entertaining.  I agree, though, some of the most entertaining sites of all was just watching the other people who were obviously there visiting and experiencing culture shock. Marie Laveaux's was another favorite. I was so distracted, though, by keeping my friend from stalking the area pirates that were floating from bar to bar. Thankfully, most places she could not get her automated wheelchair up and into so it kept her on the street and within eyesight.  :)

Took the Trolley to the French market. Bought 25 voodoo dolls and 16 magnets for friends and family.  (Things should get interesting).  My daughter wanted some gemstones so we grabbed some from a witch at a witch shop.  She was sitting motionless behind as screen.  As you walk by you don't expect her to be just sitting there. No expression. Maybe she was in a trance summoning Gerald Gardner or something.

After that we went to Cafe Du Monde which was wonderful! Then we went back to the hotel. Made out. Fell asleep.  We woke up around 5 o'clock and headed over to the Original Oyster Factory and scarfed down a bunch of oysters, red fish and crab cakes. We ate to the sounds of spring (http://myppk.com/get/spring)  who played the audience really well. So we bought ourselves a CD.  Spring is a one man pianist, sax player and vocalist.  He was appreciated.

Then we went over to Gazebo's for that Cajun Bloody Mary but they closed at six. :(

After that, we just walked around St. Louis Cathedral and enjoyed the sounds of a accordion player, then grabbed some gelato, coffee and headed back to the hotel.

Tomorrow we're probably going to hit up the museums ...voodoo and wwii.

Wife is passing out.  And I'm like...a block from bourbon street.  This may not end well.

See, i SAY burlesque but it was probably as close to burlesque as they could get.  I mean there was a high degree of fabulous, so I guess that's all ya really need.

I'm pretty excited about the voodoo tours tomorrow. I REALLY love the historical flavor of the place.  It's like once you know more of the history the whole environment takes on a whole new perspective. Previously you're just soaking up what's going on now which is wonderful in itself. When you know the past of the place...you're walking in it's soul.

If the witch was summoning Uncle Gerry, you'd probably have seen her at the burlesque show. He was into that sort of thing, if you know what I mean. Him and Uncle Al. All about the 'eye of horus'.

Glad you're having a great time. :)

Wife is passing out.  And I'm like...a block from bourbon street.  This may not end well.

If the witch was summoning Uncle Gerry, you'd probably have seen her at the burlesque show. He was into that sort of thing, if you know what I mean. Him and Uncle Al. All about the 'eye of horus'.

Glad you're having a great time. :)

Thanks!  And yeah i'm thinking i saw that 'eye' in some rather interesting places.

This morning we went to the Vacherie Cafe a couple blocks down from our hotel.  Asia, our waitress, was really nice and gave us a good tip on finding a reputable tattoo parlor.  I had it in my head that the misses and I were going to get matching tattoos but that idea was short lived.  We did check out Downtown Tattoos (as Electric Ladyland was a bit outside our scope) but we decided against it for now.  Vacherie had an amazing crawfish frittata which is highly recommended.

Jackson Brewery has public restrooms.  That is all.

Then it was the tattoo parlor which didn't pan out but we found a great little coffee shop where we met this guy:

He found that there were some amazing crumbs around the place as he pretty much walked around like he owned the place. Although I suspect he didn't because pigeons don't make coffee.  :fnord:

We checked out Marie Laveau's historic house which, if you're not paying attention, you'll walk right past it. Someone currently lives there and I suspect they're probably okay with people taking pictures of their house.

Or at least I certainly hope so.  If I wake up with a shrunken head or rockin rager I'll know where to look first....and thank them.

We hopped on the trolley to Mothers.

Holy mouth watergasm....LMNO wasn't kidding.

We ordered the Original Po Boy with debris as recommended and the wife ordered a fresh seafood Oyster and Shrimp Po boy..
i mean LOOK AT THIS!  I think i may just have to go back.

If they are open I might just have to slip out and go eat another one of those.

Then the rest of the day was basically spent just bummin around.  We grabbed some Aunt Sally's Pralines.  Grabbed a Cajun Bloody Mary from the Gazebo...which, incidentally, was the best damn bloody mary both my wife and I have ever tasted. Once again, thanks LMNO.

We dropped by the voodoo museum and bought tickets for tomorrow at 1:00pm for their tour.  I stopped in a occult bookstore and picked up a gargoyle (for the son..he asked for a gargoyle specifically...i dunno) and the Zombie Tarot which is ridiculously funny to me...

Then we came back, chilled a bit in the hotel and went out back to Cafe Du Monde a second time because that was required...then popped in and out of some shops and called it a night :)

That looks like an awesome time, Burns. Also for some reason I found the pigeon wayyy more funny than was probably warranted, which may be because it's late and I've had a few glasses of wine.

Pigeons are always funnier after you've had a few too many.  Otherwise they just shit on your clothes.

Glad to see you're having a great time!

Thanks!

It's kind of funny because my wife, having visited there before, was already familiar with the town to a degree (mostly toward the Esplanade street side). Thanks to your recommendations it turned out that I was able to show HER a good time rather than the other way around as she originally suspected.  It was very much appreciated.

The last day in NOLA was pretty short.  We went on the voodoo tour (http://www.voodoomuseum.com/) which was really cool to hear the history and a more favorable side of the religion. My wife, having been raised Catholic was mostly curious about the relationship between Voodoo and Catholicism.

We got to hear a bit about the history of Marie Laveau and we visited her tomb.  The guide then had us knock three times and make three wishes "in sincerity".

Interestingly, the tour guide is both a full-on Catholic as well as a Voodoo priestess.  She is also quite fabulous and knowledgeable.

The place had a slight bit more credibility than other places in the city but there was, of course, still that element of tourism--but what can you do?  I could go on about this but there isn't too much else to tell aside from the new orleans history which is a bit out of scope for this thread.

Instead, I'll leave you with pictures:

Later on we stopped by Felix's for the rest of the food we missed...Effoute, red beans and rice, jambalaya, fried gator.

And, by this point, we were so beat we ended up just hanging out in the hotel room watching silly animal videos on youtube :P.

It was about time to come home and we were certainly feeling it. I'm barely able to plow through this post I'm so tired, but i need closure.  I might end up rewriting it into one long blog post at some point soon...but not before getting a shit load of sleep.

If you're exhausted after a vsit to NOLA, you're doing it right.

Seriously.  I think we've probably walked a total of AT LEAST 20 miles--and I think I'm probably under shooting that.

:) Ahhh, but did you dangle from any balconies? Haha... Granted at that particular hotel, it may not be much of a drop, but a drop it would be!

That's awesome... walking is one of my favorite things. I think that humans are meant to cover a lot of ground on our feet every day, and we're happiest and healthiest when we walk a lot.

I think  you might have something there.  PTown is a walking town, the kind of place where you can get all your Steps(tm) in before noon.  And I feel fantastic.  Sure, maybe because the place is beautiful, I'm on vacation, and surrounded by FABULOUS, but at the same time I'm pouring vodka down my throat like my mouth was a funnel, and not feeling any of the usual side effects.

Maybe this isn't the best anecdotal evidence...

My favorite is drinking and walking, because if you walk enough and pace your drinking, you can drink all you want and never get fat or hung over.
