Seeing the third boob implant making the rounds yesterday made me wonder if the future will ever get too weird for me.
I saw Total Recall when I was 10, so this looks about right to me, but what does this trend look like when escalated?
The current spectrum of identity variation is pretty tame compared to what seems likely to emerge in the near future.
Race is an artificial construct, gender/sexuality is a continuous spectrum, easy as pie, but what when the species distinctions get blurry?
I hope to keep up! I don't want it my grandkids to be like "Sure, Pop Pop is a nice guy, but he sure is racist against the Gene-spliced Cat Monkey Sex Cyborgs!"
I was hoping to unseat the racial epithet that's been glued to the front page of PD this week, but if 3 boobs can't do it I don't suppose anything can!
Glompchomping sounds like a particularly annoying 90's hit song.

Bump to keep the racial epithet off the front page.

Ah, of course! I probably should have looked into it more.
I've been wondering about what the hot button issues of the future might be, if we ever sorted out the racial/gender/sexuality problems, what would be the next challenge? I came up w/ speciesism. It seems likely we'll eventually see a certain amount of body/genetic modification, wearable tech to the point of genuine augmentation, and perhaps even A.I. w/ opinions of its own.
Also, I thought Gotham was totally good enough!
Maybe a few too many coincidences, but it might work to think of the killing of the Waynes as something that sets off a chain reaction, which ultimately results in the world of Batman and his rouges gallery.
Shield season premier seemed totally awesome to me. Either the budget got bumped or just natural advance in FX, but the Absorbing Man looked spectacular.
I'm a really cranky guy when it comes to TV, my house-mates thought I was a snob when it came to this stuff, they were probably right.
It doesn't help that I'm rewatching the wire, which is probably unfair to do to it.
What I liked
Alfred as much less posh sounding butler
The costumes and look of the city
The penguins actor
Bruce standing on the roof looking like he is going to kill himself but was actually being goaded on by his psychotic butler
What I disliked
The clunky exposition, with emphasis on the repeatedly using each new characters name as they come on.
The riddler, nudging the audience in the ribs
Anything the penguin was used for
The seeming lack of purpose
In the space of a day Gordon meets (and gets the name for) the penguin, the riddler, poison Ivy and batman this makes me feel like less like the show is world building and more that were seeing a small incestuous group of criminals
The idea of a chain reaction set off from the murder as you say is a cool idea, but in some cases they are better off leaving the character out for the time being. Part of batmans thing is escalation and crazy people popping out of nowhere. It was too much too soon.
Shield was a show I just couldn't get into, though I have heard it improves greatly towards the latter half of the first season I just wasn't into it.

Thanks for peeling the vinyl back, you bean-chomping bastard. :argh!:
I'm currently watching The Wire too! First time through for me. Got a little burnt out by the dock worker / union stuff in season 2, but the first few episodes of season 3 are pulling me back in.
And yeah, I totally agree w/ your dislikes of Gotham, but am hoping most of that stuff was caused by the creative demands of a pilot episode. Like the rapid fire shoe horning of Batman villains was an attempt to demonstrate how rich the intellectual property of the series is to the suits?
The first half of season 1 of Shield is pretty rough, but also kind of necessary to building the stakes for what is a pretty excellently executed twist, which also tied in w/ the surprisingly good Captain America 2.
Though what I'm most curious about is Constantine.
I can't imagine they can pull off what I like about Hellblazer on a network show, but the trailer had more right about it than I expected

The Wire
That show says nigger a lot. My favorite nigger from The Wire is Bodie. He refuses to change who he is even though everything else around him changes.
Wait is that a spolier?
OMAR DIES AT THE END
DUMBLEDORE MARRIES SNAPE.
The Shield is worth the haul. It's not quite as good as The Wire, certainly rougher around the edges, but comparing the two is apt and not unfair to either. And like The Wire, there's more than a level of headlines writing the script, as the series was influenced by the Rampart scandal (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rampart_scandal). If you can stick with it to season 4, you'll get to see Glenn Close giving a brilliant performance as Captain Rawlings.
With regards to Gotham, I'm just watching it now, and I note Bruno Heller is the writer for the episode, and presumably at least one of the lead writers for the series. Not gonna lie, that makes me pause. Heller was one of the writers for HBO's Rome, which was of course a great series. But he was also a writer for The Mentalist, which was a very formulaic, episodic cop drama, though his episodes were notably better than many of the other writers for the series, dealing as they did with the "Red John" arc.

The Shield is all about faggot cops, I hate pigs, always trying to pork your donuthole in the Arby's parking lot for a "traffic violation".
I'll give you a traffic violation.
But seriously I'm watching

Hi GlompChomp!
I genuinely don't care about whatever language you use, that's all on you!

So there's all that then!

To be fair, Silk Cuts are fucking expensive nowadays. I doubt NBC, let alone Constantine, has the budget for them.

One if his defining arcs was his lung cancer.
I watched the Pilot, it was ok, felt more like charmed then hellblazer but I was expecting that.
That arc was awesome. The first non-Swamp Thing arcs I read of John. I should go find that and read it again. It's probably packed up somewhere.
That was the start of Garth Ennis's arc and has Steve Dillon (Preacher) so every issue looks gorgeous. I read his six volume run a couple of years back and it loved it, the other writers who have written him have all had their own interesting takes on the character but he was the one who defined it for me.

Dangerous Habits is my fav Hellblazer story. Man, such a shame that it's a network show. Makes me wonder how the Preacher AMC adaptation could possibly work out.
I wish Garth Ennis & Steve Dillon would team up again on something substantial! Anything to keep SD from drawing any more Marvel superhero books.
Just saw something pretty cool about Guillermo del Toro developing a DC movie called
Dark Universe with John Constantine, Swamp Thing, The Spectre, Deadman, Zatanna and Zatara. That'll do!
Wait, no smoking? Pure and blatant blasphemy!
I'm super cautious about the new hellblazer series. the movie was god awful, the devil character being the only interesting thing about it. I'm just really hoping that they have the balls to at least try to deliver on the gritty fucked up parts of constantine: his immense guilt, his tragic history, his addiction to the macabre and dangerous that repeatedly leads him to the brink and endangers everyone he loves. But then i remember that this is network TV, and balls are in short supply there. What do I think this is, HBO?
Yeah, one thing I liked about the comics was that it (as far as I recall) never explicitly underscored that just about everyone who fell into John's wake eventually had something really, really terrible happen to them.

This is why advertisers are offering less and less money for advertizing slots, and have been since 2003. The networks have never adjusted from the 1970s thinking of "You'll watch whatever shit we put in front of you". I can watch anything I want now, on hundreds of channels. The entire cinematic body of works from the get-go is available online with no commercials and no delay.
So the networks continue to offer watered-down shit. Why would anyone bother watching anything they air?
I have a feeling I am infested with Gremlins, because there are SHIT-TONS of delays when I try to stream stuff. Digital static, hangs, dropped signal... It took me almost 8 months to finish Breaking Bad, because I couldn't watch a single episode without the whole thing freezing on me. Plus, my Roku won't play nice with Comcast, the Boston monopoly holder.

He is supposedly doing it, it was originally going to just be a justice league Dark series. Unfortunately Justice league dark is horribly written and got sucked into tie in event hell. But more positively that means Guillermo has a clean slate to work with.
I've only ever seen Zatara in a very short story of Swamp thing annnnnd
His death (and Sargons) is one of the most funny, tragic and awesome scenes I've read. Not only that but thought it was brief it helped define how Constantine gets close to people and then uses them up until there is nothing left. A trait that is a cornerstone of his character.
The only thing is, when the hell is Guillermo meant to do this, he's got Pacific Rim, Pinocchio, Silent Hills, Crimson Peak and The Strain to think about.
Season two of The Wire threw me the first time I saw it, it felt almost alien to be looking as a bunch of pasty Polish Dock workers after coming to love Idris Alba and the others from the first season. It will make sense where it fits in with the rest, and is just as valid a story as the first season, but it will probably be season 4 or 5 before it does.
The wire isn't my favourite show but I can easily admit it's the best made show. I've only one complaint about it and it's a minor one, is the premise of season 5, and even then, the acting never falters for a moment, the story is still engaging, it just stubs its toe a little.
Season 4 is Amazing. I complained about the child actors in Gotham and there is a saying in Hollywood never to work with animals or children, but Most of the cast of 4 are children and every single one is great, they must have used up this centuries quota of good child actors.

No, they're dicks down south, too. I have a friend in Houston, who makes a living doing online video streaming and similar, which means his ability to earn money is entirely dependent on Comcast. As far as he's concerned, Comcast is the devil. Despite paying for their fastest service, his internet connection is consistently below what it is meant to be and some days the service is so bad he cannot stream at all. Comcast have sort of but not really admitted their liability in his case (their engineers admit they are probably at fault somewhere, the company itself wont say a word), but since Comcast is literally the only game in town internet-wise, he's stuck with them until whatever time Google decides to destroy the telecomms cartels with their superfast broadband.

Comcast controls the lines here in Houston. Just never understood the horror stories of it lagging so much. If there is a slow connection it's because of a cable snapped, or exploded underground. Worse thing that ever happened to me was they wouldn't fuck off selling me their phone service. I literally told them "I will make you twitter famous if you try one more time to sell me that fucking phone service. You think I give a shit if I'm being recorded?" As far as their service I guess it must suck in the South side of Houston. Also AT&T is fucking terrible here in this area. Disregard there's the business center 5 minutes away from where I live.
I didn't make it through the Constantine pilot on my first try, which isn't a commentary on its quality so much as on my viewing habits. I tend to not actually watch TV, but rather listen and glance while working, and some shows just can't be followed like this.
This kinda skews what I think of as good or bad TV. I've tried to watch Game of Thrones 3 or 4 times, but all I know about what happens is that there are battle sounds, horse noises, and people rushing about. Mad Men on the other hand is perfect for me. Dialogue driven storytelling and well established characters / scenery.
20 Minutes into Constantine and all I really knew was that there had been fiery explosions for some reason.
The Wire is serving well so far. :fnord:
Also, yeah, I kinda can't imagine del Toro actually getting around to that movie, but that it's a possibility sitting on the table is still pretty cool!
