Totally plausible, I've played with an industrial demagnitizer which I'm pretty sure works on the same principle. Levitated a piece of aluminum with it.
Same thing is what makes induction motors work.
Also the same thing that makes induction furnaces work, so if you sand in one place too long, the copper/aluminum might melt.
