And now I can't play video files :argh!: Windows media player no longer understands what a media file is. VLC can play video but not sound. Yeah, I know - linux and I'd be sorely tempted if it wasn't for the empirical fact that linux desktop is abject shit. Any other suggestions?
Get a Mac.

Is it really a good idea to be giving technology to Scots?
They're just going to stuff it into a sheep's stomach anyway.

Yosemite is what I am running on my home laptop and I have to say, its awful and broke my audio, having worked on every previous version to this, so I cant recommend it
Windows 8.1 hasn't given me issues on my work laptop beyond weird skype integration issues and stupid UI layouts.
Ubuntu is nice if you are willing to put the time in to make it look nice (is it worth it?)
You're almost best on 8.1 unless you want to go back to win 7

If Pent told you that his big toe hurt, would you tell him to fix it by cutting off his leg?

Seriously.
I'd never used an Apple anything until my current employers basically went 'fuck, we don't have any real laptops for you right now, so we're going to have to give you this old macbook'.
I've never been so frustrated with a computer, and I used Vista for years.
Years. It is just similar enough to not
quite do what I expect it to do. Every time.
In summary: Things that aren't the way I'm used to doing things are annoying and wrong and people who like them are dumb. :argh!:
I was thinking more like "things that I have to pay twice as much for in return for having the privilege of not being able to fix/tweak/customize them to conform with my needs and wants are annoying and wrong", but whatever's clever.
I didn't pay anything for mine - I was literally talking for myself.

Yeah, well, being given
any old piece of technology to work on is never ideal.
Yeah but being given an old mac is essentially saying "This was twice the price for half the spec years ago. Enjoy your heap of shit, be happy that it even turns on."
Incidentally, in the market for a decent new laptop and couple of desktops (standard office gear) if anyone feels like throwing some advice around.
8.1 also added M$-induced adware as part of the operating system. Last night, my wife and I bought tablets. We have UNLIMITED DATA, and NO FUCKING WINDOWS.

I don't hate myself that much and refuse to spend that kind of cash on others.
Chromebooks are a decent option for people who don't like being able to tweak things.
What are your objections to 8.1 and what are you on currently?
What do you use machine for primarily?
