Title: Love Does Not Stay
Post by: Q. G. Pennyworth on August 07, 2016, 11:04:31 AM
Love does not stay where you put it
Love is not shelf-stable
Love is not a mountain or an anchor or a deeply rooted tree
It is a puddle of radioactive mercury.

Love does not conquer anything
Love will not save you
Love is neither sword nor armor nor strongly fortified keep
It is a hummingbird in flight.

Love will not solve your problems
Love is not all you need
Love cannot even hold itself together without constant effort
It is a cottage in constant need of repair.

Love does not stay where you put it
Love has no pause button
Love has no objective existence or basis in reality
It is two people who grow together, or apart.

If that's how it came out and you're not going for a particular style or format, could this be ok? I thought it was pretty damn good!

I really like the essence of the "love is not" parts of the poem and smooth sense of repetition because of how it juxtaposes against my Pauline conditioning: "Love is patient, love is etc, etc". He never did get into what love is not, didn't approach in his description of what it "is" with any criticality. Of course he also saw it as a force separate from humanity and called it God. Personally I think that to limit "God" to love is... disingenuous bordering on outright whitewashing.

For if so... (poem post facto titled "Without Trace")

Love is the agony
of illness and grief
As surely as any
Joyous constancy
Or whatevs

Love gets measured
In blood drops often
In shiny carats too
In words by volume
In fires renued
Love's lax standard

In a horrible world
Such a horrible thing
As this love they speak of
Must surely be
by any measure

The most wicked
And wonderful
And just fucking awful
This because it's good
But should you seek it
But stretch your hand forth
With need for the one thing
In a horrible, beautiful world
Worth having

And it's gone
Just like that
Like you never
Even knew It

And Who's To Say That You Did?

I think this fixes it:

Love will not solve your problems
Love is not all you need
Love cannot even hold itself together without intervention
It is a cottage in constant need of repair.

I love the last line of yours, TWJ.

Thanks! I'm not sure where this stuff comes from. I literally just happened to see this as I scanned PD this morning and then the op had an unanticipated effect. I'm glad you liked the results.

Your fix looks good. As a point of fact most of the works you've posted are excellent IMO.
