I am tired of bickering amongst ourselves.  Let's make fun of some presidents instead

"A fool and his money are soon elected." -- Will Rogers.

"It's easy being a humorist when you've got the whole government working for you." -- Will Rogers.

"Revolution is a trivial shift in the emphasis of suffering." -- Tom Stoppard.

America is the only nation in history which miraculously has gone directly from barbarism to degeneration without the usual intervention of civilization. -- George Clemenceau

America's one of the finest countries anyone ever stole. -- Bobcat Goldthwait

The object of war is not to die for your country but to make the other bastard die for his. -- General George Patton

seriously...put the party politics aside for a second, and look at his record (not the criminal one)...he was actually one of hte most centrist republican presidents of that century, and his accomplishments in the global/foreign policy arena are second to none...and really, every president does the stuff that he got caught for, he just hired incompetent loudmouths as his B&E guys...

BTW, I'm very liberal when it comes to domestic policy, and even I know that blindly parroting a party line instead of actually examining the issues at hand and a particular politician's stance on said issues just makes you look foolish. There are liberals with whom I disagree with violently, and conservatards who I think generally have a clue. I mean, if Zell Miller and John McCain were running against each other for president, would you really vote for Zell Miller just because he's a democrat, even though he's a flaming retard? For that matter, suppose John McCain and Hillary Clinton end up running against each other in '08...would people actually vote for that slimy shitbag just because she's a liberal, and ignore the fact that she's one of the biggest crooks that's ever held public office? I fear they would, but I'd like to think that people who frequent this place are a little smarter and more enlightened than that...

this last part really isn't directed at you, GitM, it just sort of turned itself into a mini-rant before I could close it out...

All Dick Cheney did is help start a war.

Why should Hillary scare me?  Is she going to pretend that a nation has WMDs, and then send our kids over to be killed for nothing?  Or will she restrict our 4th amendment rights?  Or eliminate the social safety net?

You can't be this naive.  The boom of the 90s was primarily felt at the working-class level.  Why do I give a shit about some 22 year old going boom and then bust?  I'm talking employment levels, median income, and standard of living.

As far as the president having "nothing to do with it", I suggest you spend more time looking into the economic initiatives that laid the groundwork (infrastructure, etc), and less time looking into the pages of the National Review..

I hope to God you're trolling.

you guys never cease to amaze me...I attack a pseudo-liberal "centrist" shitbag sleazeball carpetbagging potential presidential candidate, and I defend Nixon's foreign policy record, and the most intelligent thing you can think of to say is to call me VoT? come on...you all know better than that anyway, and frankly, I find your inability to put aside party politics and deal directly with the issues and people involved a little sad...I didn't realize that liberals were automatically paragons of virtue and conservatives were automatically the devil incarnate...but then, I prefer to base my political opinions and decisions on the facts at hand and not some broad, overreaching label that is frequently misapplied by lazy journalists and opportunistic campaign managers...

basically, I thought we were supposed to be the ones who weren't the sheep.

I do agree with Turd McFerguson Stabby Bath Pants, Nixon did a lot with foreign relations.  Whether it will end up being an actual good thing or whether his motives were good or whether good is a definable term are all up for debate.

Hillary Clinton's biggest problem, IMHO, is that she did overtly what many first ladies did covertly.  It should be pretty obvious that Bill didn't fall in love with her for her body, she is smart.  I don't think she is as crooked as some, but neither do I think she has never done anything wrong.

So would I, there is no way in hell I would put up with that crap, but I am not married to a politician and I have no political amibitions myself.  That has to influence a lot of her decisions.  Why people do or do not stay married is none of my business just as my marriage is none of theirs.

They are not bought and paid for by the same people. They are bought
and paid for by different divisions of the same people. They get their
payoffs from different corporate entities. That makes all the difference.

I am certainly glad we have voting records to tell us which politician
is telling us what we want to hear so we can vote for the one that
reads the focus group data that most closely matches our current
parroting of political slogans we have most recently assimulated.

I do not vote for people based on whether or not they have a (D) or a

1.  Um, with the exception of HUAC, all the things I mentioned were WHILE HE WAS IN OFFICE.  Now, his environmental/OSHA record isn't too bad, but the China thing?  Yeah, that worked out.

2.  Fuck off.  This conversation is over.

I expected this from Turd, but...et tu, Gnome?

Let' just take a look at this:  Dems bad, GOP worse.

Let's vote for worse, because bad isn't perfect.  Okay.

Aren't you the one that wants to tear everything down?

Consistency is the hobgoblin of small minds.

Face it:  you get two choices - that may seem very similar, but not identical.

YOU choose, Gnome.  You really think the Dems are as anti-freedom as is the GOP?

Oh yeah, there are only two choices. ::slaps forehead:: I forgot. Damn.
I will have to rearrange my frontal lobes. Let's see. Black and white.
Bad and worse. Republican and democrat.

(I told you before, A foolish consistency...)

Let me ask you a question, Roger. How many troops would Kerry have
withdrawn from Iraq during his term of office?

That's hardly a fair question, whoever gets elected next is going to inherit this mess.  It's like the proverb where you save someone's life, then you are responsible for it.

Bush never prepared for this part of the process.  As far as I have been able to tell, no one did.  That is one of the reasons it is such a disaster.

Nope, but I do watch TV.  One of my all time favorite shows was America's Dumbest Criminals.  With video recording equipment so easy to get hold of, people are videotaping themselves doing all sorts of things.  Abu Graib also comes to mind.  Although, some of those Army Reserves may have been naive enough to believe they weren't doing anything wrong, or maybe it is because some of them were prison gaurds here in the States before being deployed.

You would be amazed at what people will believe is OK when it comes from someone in a position of authority.  And that is the top google for Milgram.  They won't let him do his experiments any more.  They stopped him after these.  And the less flexibility you leave young people in deciding things, the less able they are to ever question authority figures, the more suscetible they are to this kind of pressure.  "It must be OK because the sargeant, general, boss, whatever told me to do it."  That's why I have a nice healthy fuck you attitude.  Oh, yeah, remember these experiments happened in the USA in the 1960's

True.  The Germans, as a people, are law-abiding folks for the most part, and wouldn't hurt a fly...unless someone in uniform tells them to.

In the USA, we have come to worship the "easy solution", combined with the John Wayne Syndrome ("Kick the living shit out of anything you don't understand").

It was only natural that these mouthbreathers from West Virginia would do what they did at Abu Graib.

Whoops...scratch that.  The guards were only engaging in "frat pranks", and the war is a noble effort.  Because the Dems aren't perfect.

Remember, kids...the greater evil is better, because the lesser evil failed to remain absolutely spotless.

It would never work because - contrary to myth - Americans are no better, morally, than any other people.  Fact is, many Americans WANT to hurt Iraqi "persons of interest", because they associate Iraq with 911.  After all, both Saddam and OBL were suspiciously brown, and so are the people incarcerated in Abu Graib.

This is why there has been no serious call to punish the higher ups responsible (Rumsfeld, Gonzalez, Bush, etc).

And what part of Hillary's health care plan would send you to jail for going to the wrong doctor?

The part that detailed criminal penalties for both the patient and the
doctor if the transaction was not previously approved by an assigned
gatekeeper.

freedom of info act, civil rights advances, etc, etc.

as for his crookedness, it was his paranoia that got him caught doing what every other president has doen and does.

Subverting the democratic process, Kent State, his interesting anti-Semetic conversations with Billy Graham in the oval office, enthusiastic participation in HUAC, etc.

He was a monster.  I hope they remembered to put a stake through his heart before they buried him.

we're not talking about his beliefs, his intentions, or his motives...we're speaking strictly of what he accomplished while in office.

And I'm not trying ot get in another pissing match with you Rog, but I think it's very important that we don't let our hatred of Emperor Lying Fuckbag and his cronies blind us to the larger realities at hand, one of which is that we'd probably be having this same conversation with different names had Kerry or some other Dem been elected...

I didn't challenge your intelligence at all...I said that the things you were saying worried me because I have a great deal of respect for your intelligence...and again, I'm not debating in a manner anything like VoT..if I was, I would have posted twice, ignored everybody's redress of my posts, and called everyone a bunch of whacked-out liberals or some such mullet-headed drivel...and unfortunately, I'm slamming the Dems because I don't see them as a viable alternative in their current state...I agree that they might be the slightly lesser of two evils, but if they don't have anybody who can get elected, it's kind of a moot point, and maybe we need to start thinking about other alternatives...if we start now, we might be able to accomplish something worthwhile before our kids inherit a ruined nation...try to remember you and I are on the same side here, OK?

Damn, Rog. Just trying to find a copy of the bill has taken this long
and the sucker is 1000's of pages long! My eyes are buggin out here,
man.

They have it at this site, but the "searches" expire and you have to
go back to the beginning and start over, so I can't link directly to the
bill.

http://thomas.loc.gov/home/search.html

Enter in Health Security Act and select 103rd Congress.
Click to search. Then click on [S.1757.IS], (#6.)

The offending passages are supposed to be in Title V, Subtitle E.
But everything refers to everything else, so have fun trying to
figure out what it means.

Okay, it could be I was wrong and repeated something that wasn't true.
What are the chances of that? After all, I'm infallible, right? (I am
sure VoT can tell us all about how I was right. HA!) Anyway, that was
what I remembered. There are criminal penalties in there. Mostly for
fraud. And there are circumstances where getting treatment outside the
"plan" could be considered fraud. So work it out. I'm hungry.

Many of us refuse to categorize ourselves, let me count the wtf's

1  It's none of your business

2  We don't let anyone in on our evil plans

3  We do not fit into any one category, we ebb and flow, we are this part of that and that part of this which allows us to be both and neither all at the same time.

There's more, but I have more  important things to take care of.

Especially Biden.

incidentally, if the Dems want to run a female candidate, they oughtta let the GOP lackeys push the constitutional amendment through to allow foreign-born citizens to be president, and then run Jennifer Granholm.

And that my dear sir, is the problem.  You seem like a nice guy trying to do a nice thing here, but you have your head so far up your bum you couldn't see the light if someone shoved it down your throat.

You are so busy taking yourself so seriously, I wonder if you take life seriously, if you take fun seriously, if you take joy seriously.  What do you see when you go outside.  Do you see the wonders?  Do you rail against everything?  Do you have joy?  Do you really think you are more than important than them?  Do you think a dividing line really exists?  How far into your own soul have you ever looked?  Have you seen your own shadow and been scared?  Is that why we terrify you so much that you must ban us?  We will be fine.  There are those among us who are young and angry, they react harshly.  We know they need time to grow and we give them the time and space they need.  We, that is, the ones who have gone through the anger to the other side.  We all have to do that, it looks like you never have.  The only way out is through.  You can't hide from your anger and pain behind fluffy white clouds of ignorance.  You have to face them, all the dark things that live in the corners of your mind, you have to face them or they eat away at you until you are nothing but the dark things.

As near as I can tell, he is basing it soley on the fact that she is a woman, that is the only thing he has identified.  She has been in politics since before she met Bill, but a lot of people don't realise that.  They think she rode in on his coat tails, when it may actually be the other way around.

time for me to rip you a new one again...

please point out to me where I EVER said that her being a woman had anything to do with it? because I could give a rat-fuck about that...I also never said that her crimes were any worse than anything that every other politician does...however, none of those other politicians are the most likely person to be our next president...if she decides not to run and they put Biden or Edwards or Vilsack in as a replacement, I'll surely find something just as wrong with each one of them.

Especially Biden.

incidentally, if the Dems want to run a female candidate, they oughtta let the GOP lackeys push the constitutional amendment through to allow foreign-born citizens to be president, and then run Jennifer Granholm.

This kind of ranting, in my opinion, is part of the problem.

Nobody is good enough for your vote, these days?  Well, that's fine, as long as you are willing to pay the price for not voting.

When you get sent to a stupid, useless war on the other side of the planet, when you are thrown in jail for not being patriotic enough, when the IRS invades your life for no reason, when you are forbidden to fly because you aren't conservative enough....THEN you will realize that it really DOES matter who is president/governor/police chief.  And you will wish you HAD voted.

While jingoism does not equal patriotism, neither does being cynical...and there's nothing wrong with genuine patriotism, in a republic.  Why the hell do you think the republic is degrading into tyranny?

Because nobody cares, anymore.  They're too busy rah-rahing the war, or being too cool to give a shit.  May they all burn in hell.

It is lamentable, that to be a good patriot one must become the enemy of the rest of mankind. - Voltaire

The love of one's country is a splendid thing. But why should love stop at the border? - Pablo Casals

Nationalism is an infantile disease. It is the measles of mankind. - Albert Einstein

Patriotism is the willingness to kill and be killed for trivial reasons. - Bertrand Russell

Screw patriotism. It's a lost term, representing am ideal that should never be attained. It's become a rallying cry for everyone trying to surface a cheap sense of duty for their side.

How about forgetting our borders and adopting a kind of humanitarianism, a basic sense of human decency and what is right? The world is too small now for patriotism to survive in it's current form. People are starting to blur their allegiances. What you see as a lack of partriotism and a gradual decay of social order is more representative of a world that realises that things are becoming more complicated, more blended.

I don't know where that will finally get us, but I can't honestly view that as a bad thing. We prevent disease, murder, destruction, and yet we condone all of these things under the umbrella of patriotism.

I love my country, but not to the exclusion of others. My allegiances are to the people that surround me and that have fought governments to make right. And to the land that supports them, wherever that may be. That's where my debt lies, not to some ideal of Motherland. I vote based on those policies and because it's in my best interests, and not because it is my "duty".

No, patriotism isn't lost, it's just been co-opted, and used to represent jingoism.  That is no reason, however, to let the actions and Orwellian words of the Bastards that be dictate our behavior.

The world's a big place.  It's all I can do to worry about my country, let alone the teeming billions that live outside of it.  Our best hope, the world's best hope, is to get our nation back under control.  FDR had the right idea with his "Good Neighbor" policy.  Unfortunately, 3 nations at that time could not agree to something like that, and the results spoke for themselves.

As for the rest of your post:

Allegiances should start bottom up.  Family, then friends, then country, then world.  But these are not mutually exclusive terms.

Just one man's opinion, of course.
Title: Presidents say stupid things

Unfotunatly, there are some words that are co-opted and shall never be clean again. Patriotism is one of those words.

Actually, come to think of it, when was it ever clean? People have been using patriotism in the same dirty way since history began.

QuoteThe world's a big place. It's all I can do to worry about my country, let alone the teeming billions that live outside of it.

I am he as you are he as you are me and we are all together. I've got more friends outside the country than in, which may have skewed my thinking a bit, but people and the big picture are my first concern. Where has myopic nationalism gotten us?

QuoteOur best hope, the world's best hope, is to get our nation back under control.

Well, in the short term, maybe. I doubt it. The world's best hope is for people to relize that our country is not the most important one as of this moment. That we do not have the right to impose ourselves on others based on non-existant threats and paranoi. We need to think bigger. I can't see how you can think big enough to solve any problem as large as ours while still holding your interests close to the heartland of the good ol' USA.

QuoteAllegiances should start bottom up. Family, then friends, then country, then world.

Sometimes you have to protect the world before your country benefits. When everyone focuses on country before world, things go very badly very fast.

Actually, our country IS the most important one right now...for all the wrong reasons...the same reasons that made Germany pretty important in, say, 1938.

As for your last comment, if everyone focused on what's ACTUALLY best for their own country, the world would be a much nicer place.  For example, the current warmongering being done by the USA is NOT in our best interests.  Peaceful trade and wealthy neighbors are.  The rising tide lifts all boats actually does work, providing the tide really IS rising.

Words like patriotism only belong to the bastards if you let them.  I find it very patriotic to hate what the current administration is doing to my country, for example.

Your implication seems to be that I should vote the party line even if I don't think any of that party's candidates are the right person for the job. I think it's that kind of thinking that is a large part of what is wrong with american politics these days and both sides are equally guilty. There shouldn't even be "sides". And even though I would probably fall into the "liberal" category (I prefer the term "progressive"), if the '08 election ends up being Hillary vs. McCain, as seems so likely, I am going ot vote for McCain. not because of party politics, but because I think he's a better choice for the job. Does that mean I can't turn around and vote for a Democrat for senate, congress, county commissioner, school board, etc? of course not, and that's probably what I'll do. But I refuse to let my vote be influenced by labels. Sorry if that bothers you.

true, but it's more with the intention of getting all of the relevant information out in the open than anything else. America loves to get it's informed opinions from 30-second sound bites. I just think that we should gather all of the available information about a candidate, including and especially all of the serious dirt. They've all got it, but some of it may be more relevant to the issues confronting POTUS than others. Do I care about a sex scandal? not really. Que sera sera, but don't you dare tell me we need LESS cynicism. People are sheep, the last thing they need is to tell themselves the problem is that they just don't trust that nice wolf enough.

You misunderstand me.  I am not saying to blindly accept any given candidate.  What I AM saying is that you really only have two choices in a given election...and it is something less than a felony to vote for the lesser of two evils.

The cynicism I referred to is the idea that, if given the choice between a monster and a jerk, you won't vote for the jerk, because he's...well, a jerk.

For example, the last election.  Kerry wouldn't exactly have changed the world, but at least I seriously doubt he'd be trying to provoke ANOTHER war, as the moron-in-chief that we have now is.

Bad, or worse.  Decide.  (keep in mind that not deciding is still, in itself, deciding)

There's a little thing called "all the time in between elections" that we never ever use.

We wait till the last minute, when the two evils have been chosen FOR us, and then we bitch about the poor choices.

When it comes to the last minute, yes, you do have to vote for someone.

But before all that happens, it's on your head to do the homework and find out who's who and what's what and dig up the bones in their backyards, and point out things that need pointing out, and protest if you wish.

Before the final two choices there are other stages of decisionmaking. The primaries. The caucuses. The nominations. The debates.

If people sit all that out, it's no wonder they get dud candidates - they were asked for an opinion and gave none, and then wonder why their opinion isn't asked anymore.

8)

You're preaching to the choir.  Face it, the TV owns the elections...because you are one of the 5% or so who are actually willing to think about things.

Unless you can find a way to deal with the TV culture, you're always going to be choosing the lesser of two evils...and sometimes, a half-decent candidate sneaks through the cracks.

While we may agree that things are fucked up, I don't agree that it's hopeless.

A big step towards regaining responsible media would be to have the Fairness Doctrine restored, and equal time rules in ALL states.

Barthony, I agree with most of the things you've been saying in this thread, but there's one thing you've been saying that's incredibly perposterous, and that's that Hillary Clinton and John McCain's respective parties would nominate either of them. So you're telling me that the party that got their pansy asses handed to them by the inbred, fundamentalist Christian zealot majority (or at least they think they did) would be stupid enough to nominate a despised bulldyke from hell who (probably rather inaccurately) has a reputation as a "pinko", "feminazi", "tree-hugger", and "meaningless right-wing insult number 4" and an obscene trail of unsightly conspiracy theories about her ranging in various degrees of credibility, and is married to the Conservatives' whipping boy to be processed by the right-wing media zeitgeist on the trail to election day? If the cable news networks could milk so much controversy out of a centre-right moderate billionaire senator who went to Vietnam and has no testicular fortitude, imagine the orgiastic field day they'd have with Hillary. If anything, the person running on the Democrat ticket will be even more of a toned-down limp-dicked moderate pansy who appeals to the lowest common denominator, sadly.

And the fact that you think anyone as pure-hearted as John McCain could ever get past the primaries in today's G.O.P. is quaint.

Quote from: HoshikoWhere has myopic nationalism gotten us?

Ironically, back in the 18th, or maybe 19th, century, nationalism was
a revolutionary force. People began bonding with each other because
of their shared heritage and became a force that threw off some of the
bonds of their oppressors. Sadly, as has always happened, the "elite"
found a way to co-opt and exploit it to the point where it is just another
tool of oppression.

Quote from: Ghost In The MachineBeing overly cynical, however, can land you in the situation we are in today.

It could be that, instead of cynicism, our situation today is the result
to being overly optomistic. People actually believed that George W. Bush
would make things better for them. They actually believe that electing
some politiciam will make a difference. So they go along with the
scheme, believing that someday, somehow, someone will make the
right decision and their exploitation will end.

Quote from: Ghost In The MachineThere will be no revolution.

Sadly, this is true.

Quote from: Chaplin_Sinatra_FonzarellAnd the fact that you think anyone as pure-hearted as John McCain could ever get past the primaries in today's G.O.P. is quaint.

I love the use of the terms "pure-hearted" and "quaint." What a fantasy
world we live in when these terms can be used to describe politicians
and politics. (Soory. Nothing personal. Just found them, ah, touchingly
"quaint.")

sadly, I think you may be right about McCain. It's too bad, because he'd be my first choice regardless of who the Dems ran against him. I'd love to see him run as a 3rd party candidate, but he seems to feel some unfortunate loyalty to the GOP. I agree that Hillary is the wrong choice for the Dems, but I still think it's about 50/50 that they're dumb enough or deperate enough to run her anyway. Unless someoen comes out of the woodwork, the only other real choices are Kerry again, Edwards, Biden, or Vilsack.

Kerry = preoven loser

Edwards = all style, no substance, and probably more likely in '12 than in '08

Biden = might make a good president, in the same way that I think Nixon was a good president. A pompous windbag with zero integrity, but would probably be able to push some meaningful legislation through. Tendencies towards being a pompous windbag will probably relegate him to 3rd in the primaries.

Vilsack = Don't know much about him. Seems like the right temperament and personality to be electable, but stuck with a funny name.

If I'm missing anyone, please feel free to add to the list. Given those 4 as the potential other choices, I'm guessing they'll run Hillary. Lots of idiots will vote for her just because her last name is Clinton, and lots of others will vote for her because her last name isn't bush.

You are only listing Senators, which means you are missing everybody.

If the Dems are serious about winning the White House they will run
a governor. Senators have a really difficult time winning the White House.
I think it is because they have to take stands on national issues in
Congress. And, because of the way legislative bodies work, you end up
voting for and against everything. Therefore - as Kerry discovered - you
can be accused legitimately of taking the wrong side on everything,
regardless of what side that is. If this had been peace time, I am sure
they could have found enough votes by Kerry to brand him a warmonger.

The last Senator I can remember being elected was Kennedy. And he
was barely a Senator, having been in office only a couple of years (if
memory serves.)

Governors don't take position on national issues. Therefore, when they
run they can take any position on anything and get away with it. Bush,
Clinton, Reagan, the whole lot, ran as outsiders with no dirt from
legislative voting and won. Senators like Hillary and Biden, etc. are
doomed.

Why do you think the GOP wants to run Ahnold?
Title: Presidents say stupid things
Post by: East Coast Hustle on March 21, 2005, 10:25:04 PM
Vilsack = governor.

as I said before, if the GOP gets to run Arnold, then the Dems would be able to run Jennifer Granholm, who might be one of their more electable members.
