I'm gone.
Who is HST?:?
I have been having a day of total confusion
Quote from: Eldora, Oracle of AlchemyWho is HST?:?
I have been having a day of total confusion
Hunter S Thompson.
The one that a few other people were accusing me of copying.
It must have to do with the fact that my narrative involved Vegas, a bag of drugs, a convertible, and an angry Samoan.
Oh, wait, it had nothing to do with any of those things.
TGRR,
Thinks the person(s) involved can fuck themselves.
Um, Roger?
I think that was supposed to be a compliment.
Since HST took the permanent solution to his problems, it is up to you to carry on. You need to keep writing so you can publish. Seriously.

i sure hope i've never accused you of such, because in truth, i think i rip off hsi style far more than you do. it never actualyl occured to me that you were ripping him off(i don;t think so anyway). yeah on closer thought, it is kinda liek gonzo journalism, where the writer is an intrinsic part of the story, adn cannot escape involvement init(which in my opinion, is sinmpyl honest journalism), but otehrwise, yeah. no.

I've never denied that my writing is heavily influenced by HST.
However, my content is my own.
yeah i totally agree.
and it was the first tiem i clued in that it might be when he died adn you said as such. if you don't post em here, post em over there. is till don;t knwo if it's fiction or not and don;t care. it's good writing.

It's fictionalized truth...ie, the absolute truth suffers for the sake of the story.
Problem is, I sit down to do a three part story about winding up in a Maxican jail overnight the night before last, and every asshole in the universe decides that I'm stupid enough to crib Thompson's most famous piece...based solely on the fact that it involved driving in the desert. (this is the second time this thread was posted. I had the first one erased after I became seriously pissed).
I'll post the second and third parts when I can. I'm just not in the mood to write anymore, after that shit.
i hear ya. i shoudl go read soem thompson so i can fidn out what they're on about.
all i've read are his letters and his sports articles fromt eh past five years.
which are pretty fucking good all in all.
I think your style may be similar, but you are a better story teller. I read his book on the Hell's Angels, but I tried to read something else of his and couldn't.
And by story I mean series of events, true or otherwise. Because of my headaches I do not always have the ability to read all the stories here. It hurts my head and I have difficulty concentrating. I always make a point of reading whatever you write.
I am not sure what is up with you right now. Your ego seems a bit fragile and I don't know why. You are loved here on this forum and you know it. The people here respect you and you know that too. We all, well probably all, I can do a poll if you want, really look forward to you rants. There are a few morons, but that is life, consider them hecklers. The people who care about you ignore them and so should you.
Quote from: screwtape's aunt margareti hear ya. i shoudl go read soem thompson so i can fidn out what they're on about.
What they're on about is the beginning of Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas.
oh. first thign that popped into my mind was "roger has moved to texas"
because i've met people that were exactly liek the judge(soem of which proably were judges, or police men, adn so on.)
meh. maybe it was the bats or the lizards, or the otehr thing. i dunno man. i'd say fuck em. i dopn;t think you write sytlisitcally close enough, adn whiel i' only knwo the movie version, i still don't much see it as obvious enough to mention.
i shoudl make a note nto to ever reveal my influences. because then i will eb severely fucked.

1. Worse. I moved back to Arizona last week.
2. Better yet, just don't write anything of any substance.
meh i'm on hiatus from trying to write my story. it's a pain to do it spontaniety style, adn i've recently decided to fuck the ideas i ahd for the next two chapters.
i dunno. substance... i never worry abotu substance, because often times, those who do, have far too little, adn far too much filler.

Being criticized is one thing.
That, I can deal with.
Being accused of outright copying someone elses work is a little different.

Hey, roger.
[sincerity]
I'm not sure if you realized this, but I really liked what you have written here.
I'm not sure where you got the idea that I was accusing you of plagerizing HST. I know you admire the guy, and since he's dead, I figure you're the #1 choice to carry on the tradition.
It was a compliment. Honest.

Funny, I took the quoted LMNO bit to mean that now that HST is dead, you're the new king of whatevah. Insert that smiley face from wherevah the fuck you get it.
Personally I like teh good reverend's writing, in fact I don't think I've really hated anything TGR has written. Even that story where he did my mom.
Wait... ..was that different Roger?

i agree. which is why i'm nto a big fan of talking to irl freinds ont eh net, not even mentioning phone conversations(which can be better or worse, depending.)
Hey Roger,
I know you probably don't give a shit what I think, but I quite enjoyed it, you have a good "I'm-telling-this-to-you-over-a-few-too-many-drinks-in-a backwater-jukejoint" style that flows nicely and is quite witty.
I can see where the comparison to F.A.L.I.L.V. comes from, but I don't by any means think it is you trying to cop Hunter's content or style, I think just having two men driving through the desert (one being named only by his legal proffesion) is bound to make comparisons. Also, the vague threat given to the hitch-hiker is slightly similar, but beyond that there is no similarity whatsoever.
I once wrote a story about an aging writer driving through the desert by himself fleeing from imaginary government agents and was accused by people I knew of copping HST, so I know the pain. For a while men in cars in the desert are going to draw the comparison, sad to say.
For the record, I really like Hell's Angels, although I've only read it once eight years ago. I love Fear and Loathing, both in Las Vegas and on the Campaign Trail. Most of his 70's writing is really good, but I find his more recent writing incoherent.
Anyway, I look forward to reading the rest.
Men in the Desert aside, one thing I've always liked about Rog's stories is the ominous feeling that at any time, everything could go bat-shit crazy. Like, his reality is always on the verge of total collapse.
It must be fun, in more than a little tiring and stressful, to live there.
Quote from: LMNOIt must be fun, in more than a little tiring and stressful, to live there.
Heh. I'd get more stress than fun if I lived there, but it does make for some lovely stories, yes?

We all live in that reality, whether we like it or not. You never know when your life will be turned upside down. Roger is just more open about the crazier parts of his life, the parts that make us laugh a little and cringe a little. Some of us will never have experiences like this. Some of us don't have too many any more.
While that may be true El, Rog is particularly adept at communicating that feeling through his writing unlike, say, Dean Koontz.

He is a unique and talented writer, I agree. There is that edge of your seat, holy shit kind of reaction.
Someone should compile all of Roger's writings..
...or has that already happened? and if it has where is it?
