Principia Discordia

I've been working on a font lately and it would seem that I've run out of ideas for new glyphs.

So, to inspire the vast Discordian Artisticly Disordered Army to action, I present some sample renderings.

Post anything you want included in the font as long as I can legally slap a (K) copyleft on it. Black-and-white only. (It's a font, y'know.)

(And yes, some of these are based on the works of others. The final product will have complete credits included.)

(Synaptyx: I've already included alot of your work so you may now consider it Time For Something Completely Different(TM), such as, y'know, sigilizing everything and everyone in the Principia.)

I would appreciate a really good Dobbs head, and obscure symbols not found in other fonts.

[edit: I'd appreciate EPS sources instead of renderings since the font will be a Postscript Type1.]

Fantastic. I love your apple and ankh, far nicer than the ones I put together. :) How about Nurbldoff's original Eris (you can't have too many Erises). ;)

There are a couple of things that don't seem right.

In my version of the PD there appear to be five circles in the triangles, they're pretty hard to make out, but I'm sure they're there.

Also, the corner peices in the inner pentagon appear to be either square, or smaller pentagon, not sure which.

I can't confirm as I don't have a PD to hand, but I'll check the 1991 IllumniNet PD when I get home tonight. It seems to be better quality than the Loompanics edition.

Heh! ;) I don't feel I know enough about symbology. In fact I don't know anything about symbology. :lol: The two I produced - Greyface and Eris - were happy accidents. ;)

So for a recap to an idiot (the idiot being me) you make these images by taking an image, making it black and white, and then making pixels black or white instead of shades of grey? (assuming you didn't make them from scratch)

And you may be right about all of them. I was working off of a very bad scan of the Principia and guessed at alot of stuff. I know for sure I'm missing circles. I'll try to revise it if someone posts a better scan.

Some were made from scratch in Postscript (mostly the pentagon-shaped stuff with multiple axes of symmetry). The rest were made how you described, with one small addition:

I'm working on it. The problem with fonts is that they can't be too complex. Nurbldoff's first Eris has a ton of path segments. What I'm trying to do is re-trace it and smooth out all of the curves so that it takes fewer beziers to trace the full image.

A version of the Elder Sign (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Elder_Sign). It's a manual trace of a scanned image so I guess it should be OK even though the design is not mine. Not entirely Erisian of course, but still a neat symbol if you ask me.

I love them all! Just a question: what's up with eris-modern's hand? The one holding the apple appears to be mis-oriented, like she's the Amazing Jonathan doing card tricks against a black curtain.  Can I get the original image you "stole" from so I can attempt to correct the hand myself?

Everyone: here's what I have so far (with the exception of all the cool new stuff just posted that hasn't been added yet because it was just posted). As you can see, I'm trying for: all upper-case letters are apples, lower-case are pentagons. So what I really want are fancy pentagon designs and a few more apples. (I'll be encoding the grenades into the upper-half instead of making them upper-case letters, but only because they're cool.)

Ideally, I'd like the lower half (32-126) to be all font-type stuff (simplistic designs that actually look like they belong in a font) and the upper half to be all art stuff (like the apostles).

The "season-aftermath" symbol looks almost like the http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/EURion_constellation... that might be a fun symbol to throw in anyway :)

The font looks very neat! I'm going to try and get svg versions of my stuff uploaded to the open clipart place (http://www.openclipart.org/) tonight (might as well support that effort too :) ... have you looked through it for suitable stuff btw? It's a bit disorganized) Can you handle the conversion to eps from there? Otherwise I can put up eps versions somewhere else.

Yea, I wasn't aware of the EURion constellation. I'll definitely add it.

I've looked through OpenClipArt but didn't find too much useful. I was looking for biohazards at the time and the best was useless due to the way the shapes were constructed.

And, yes, converting SVG to EPS is easy since SVG is just a bastardized version of postscript with a shitload of extraneous XML around it. I mean, who the hell thinks SVG is a good idea? "Oh, it's XML!" Big deal. "It's standardized!" Yea, so is POSIX, what's your point?

...um, I don't rant so I'll stop there. I'm cool with accepting SVG, but I'd never publish in it. (I just keep getting this nagging idea that the XML should be done in such a way that the DOM can be used to manipulate the path directly instead of developing a custom parsing library for an attribute. To think! Animated vector graphics as easy as 1. ECMAScript, 2. DOM, 3. <moveto relx="5" rely"-5"/>. And again, I don't rant!)

Actually, I do have a long-term goal of vectorizing the entire PD and typesetting it in PostScript. But first, I have to buy the Sacred Paste-Ups so I can get a real good scan. ;)

As for the stamps and such: anything composed of letters is out. I'd rather turn those into specialized fonts (even if I have to make seventeen versions of the letter A to maintain accuracy). The thought of creating a glyph composed of multiple letters that isn't a ligature is just wrong somehow.

Anyway, I'm not a format nazi (at least not as long as the formats are open and intelligible) so I don't really care. The vector app I use (inkscape) is made primarily for svg, so that's what I use internally.

I'm not that into the svg debate, but isn't one benefit with an xml language that you can include it directly in e.g. a webpage if you want, and vice versa. Not that I'm entirely sure when that's useful, but... :)

syn: I think it's cool that you're making all this stuff available and you're more than welcome to use any of my pics as you wish. As I've stated before, it goes into the "public domain" -> no restrictions.

I'm not a format nazi either; as you'll notice, I pointed out problems and offered solutions. It was a critique. And you're right; as long as it's open and intelligible, it's good. The problem I have is that computers are tools and are supposed to do the work for us. SVG's current design makes more work than is needed by denying full access via the DOM; it's an anti-tool!

As for including it directly in a webpage: this denies encapsulation. I'm a programmer by hobby so I care about esoteric things like encapsulation -- seperate images in seperate files instead of some XML image format that allows it to be included directly, etc. Hell, my work space for the tarot is seven files for different cards (apostles, trumps, etc) with the glue code and a couple "(foo.ps) run" commands to include all the files. And each glyph in the font is also a seperate file (you get the picture).

Besides, when treated like an image format with strict enforcement of certain restrictions and obediance to the BoundingBox, EPS is a damn good vector graphics format. The only problem is that nobody treats it like an image format. They assume "Oh PostScript. Must be a document fit only for printing..."

And my vector graphics app of choice? A text editor. ;)

It didn't seem like that; and, reading back over everything because I forgot what I was talking about, it seemed like I was offended, which I wasn't.

You are correct. I managed to get the "K" grenade and the apple. Both grenades came through as the "K" grenade and the other two are 0 bytes.

Okay, so I tried vectorizing Greg. Apparently, I suck and so did the results. :( Care to do it for me? I want it to look at least as good as the Thornleys.

As for the page 51 pentagon, I've given up. The circles I have are incorrectly proportioned and I haven't figured out a way to automate their size/placement so adding the hollwing stuff would be too much work for too little reward. But the scan did give me the '5' and I will make an alt glyph with it. (Close enough, eh?)

Okay, okay. I think this Famous People thing is getting out of hand. There are more than enough fonts available containing famous people. (Most of them devoted to women.)

I'll add generic and notable famous people to the font given the following restrictions:

1. Only 17 persons at most will be accepted.

2. The person must, in some way, be signifant with regards to Discordia. (e.g.: Einstein, RAW, Thornley, PKD, Nixon, JFK, and via JFK is Monroe.)

3. The image must be immediately recognizeable as being of the person.

4. There is no fourth condition.

5. Head-shots only. (Only Eris may have the priveledge of bearing all in my font!)

Anybody remember that pentagon I was working on?

No idea on the Aphex Twins font, and I think I'm smart enough not to ask who they are. (Google is more helpful and it doesn't yell at me...)

As for needing anything else: I only have about a dozen code points open still, and the Tarot is in a final pass, so:
