Title: The Anti-rant Rant
Post by: hooplala on November 29, 2005, 02:58:34 PM
There are some on the forum who belittle those who don't show gumption by writing rants, as if rants are the only serious form of thought which exists.  I admire rants, I enjoy rants, I think rants are important, but I do not think they are the only form of thought which is important.  I, by nature, am not a ranter.

Ranting implies answers.  Answers imply knowledge, and when reading someone's rant I find myself asking "What makes this person so certain?"  or "Why should I listen to this person?" - what have they done to prove that they know more than anyone else?  Are they happier?  Are they living better?  If not, perhaps the thoughts behind the rants aren't working.

I do not believe I have any answers for anyone.

I am a questioner.  I have been a questioner since I could speak, and I must assume was even before then, without any way to express myself.  When I read, when I watch tv or movies, when I converse with people I find myself always asking "why?" or "how?".

Most of us can agree that the strongest point in Discordianism is that one should think for themselves, and ranting is most effective when -instead of telling someone how they should think- it helps provide other ways to think.

Ranting is one sided.  We can have an entire forum full of people ranting, but if nobody is reading and questioning it ends up being just shouts out the window into the night.

true

the most important part of the rant is the feedback you get

if you write a rant that gets no feedback
then that is also a type of feedback

its a learning process

in the search for a more comfortable tomorrow

I will honesty admit that I am more than a bit dissapointed when my threads die without a single response.

I'm still stinging from the chilly response "Agamemnon and the Ill Wind" received.  And I liked it a lot.  But, in the end, the chilly response made me work harder and write the "Alternate Original Snubs" series, which got lots of positive feedback, so LHX is correct, no feedback IS a form of feedback.

Sometimes people write stuff that I like a lot, but I don't know what to say, so I end up not saying anything. I suspect that actually happens a lot around here.  But in the future I won't do that anymore because it makes me sad that people are sad when there's no response.

Eris!

Where are all the ranters?

A whole forum? Where?

Only a few of us deluded/dooped/crazed enough to take our stand on the soap box.

And once the writing starts....it just begins to feel right.

I can assure you that if something pops into my mind to rant about that I certainly will.  I simply don't feel that I have anything I can teach anyone.

He has been holding out. But when it explodes on us, we'll probably whine about it.

No feedback is a form of feedback too, but only if there is an audience.

You know what to say, B3lla.

You just haven't figured out HOW to say it.

TGRR,
Knows these things.  Because he's a God.

Sorry. I hate to argue with God, but I really don't know what to say a lot of the time. Good thing I'm already dead or it would hurt when you call the lightening down on me for disagreeing with you, huh?

Argue with god all you like, just don't let the professional disagreements affect your personal relationship.

Hell, yeah.  It's like sex, except without the BIG, RED STRAPS, and the inevitable Mann Act charges.  Which is why I get pissy when people kill my writing mood.

And the feedback issue.  WTF?  People rant for many reasons, but any ranter who says he doesn't care about feedback is lying, if only to him/herself.  If you like the rant, SAY so.  How fucking hard is that?  Hell, if you DON'T like the rant, say why.

TGRR,
Will rant as long as he's allowed.  Then he'll get pissy again.  Then he'll rant some more.  Rinse, repeat.

Yeah, I guess your right. The rage is there, but the focus and target accuracy  are off. Maybe you could give Ol' Stormy some pointers? A finger towards the virginia coast would be a good one.
