Title: Creativity in a Cultural Wasteland
Post by: Payne on June 19, 2008, 02:32:09 am
This is for all of you out there who have shit going on, in your life, and can't deal. Can't vent. Can't defend yourself from.

There are times when you must be seen, heard, felt. And even the most apathetic or the most cynical of us do it. There are times when you must stick your head over the trench wall and see others toiling away, and take comfort from the fact that you are not alone.

So I am here. I am listening.

Some of us take up the pen, the sword, the megaphone, and turn negativity into a positive. Some of us create temporary monuments out of the shrapnel that rains on us.This is why: if we do not shit our hate, we will die.

Your tasks are your own, what you do, you must do alone, but what is done, will be seen.

The best will be remembered and emulated and refined, it is true, but the best will fade as fast as the worst.

There is nothing permanant. In the space of a life time, we build many monuments, and we tear many down.

There is respite, though. There is a moment of hiding in a shell crater as you run across no-mans-land, sharing a knowing glance with another refugee, leaving your mark, before you jump up again, and run to the next bit of scant cover.

There is that assurance that what we do will have meaning, for a fleeting time perhaps, but not an empty gesture.

EDIT: Because the original subject title suxx0red.

This is great material, dude. Seriously.

There is respite, though. There is a moment of hiding in a shell crater as you run across no-mans-land, sharing a knowing glance with another refugee, leaving your mark, before you jump up again, and run to the next bit of scant cover.

I love that line.

I really, really liked this.

Why, thanks guys.

It's a cross between some old shrapnel ideas I still have floating, disconnected, in my head. And a general sense of jaded cynicism with this whole forum at the moment.

And also a fascination with WW1.

I just shat it out and put it here, I'm glad it works.

oh my god, LMNO, that was fucking amazing.

i love the background tune. the very electronic rhytm/percussion (fast and clean, reminds me of Fischerspooner) with the bassline and the guitar tune ... it's just perfect!

near the end (and reading along) i was wondering how you'd pull off that last line, it didn't feel like it would fit in with the way you'd done the rest. the way you handled it, brilliant!

[i still don't like the reverb, but this time it didnt muffle the sound too much that i couldnt make out the words anymore]

I felt this was relevant to the thread.

So here's the plan
The Ides of March are always at hand
And when the power hungry strike
They strike the poorest of man
And if you dare put up a fight
They'll come and fight for your land
And they'll call it liberation or salvation
A call to the youth
Your freedom ain't so free, it's just loose
But the power of your voice could redirect any truth
Shift and shape the world you want
And keep your fears in a noose
Let them dangle from a banner star spangled
I'm willing and able
To lift my dreams up out of their cradle
Nurse and nurture my ideals
'Til they're much more than a fable
I can be all I can be and do much more than I'm paid to
And I won't be a slave to
What authorities say do
My desire to live within a nation on fire
Where creative passions burn and raise the stakes ever higher
Where no person is addicted to some twisted supplier
Who promotes the sort of freedom sold to the highest buyer

In fact, I want everyone to know, so I'm going to go take a bus just so I can tell everyone on it that I didn't pay for what I'm listening to, and that it came from YOU. I erased everything else from my iPod and just have that one recording looping over and over again. Forever.

Fuck you, bubblegummer, I'm taking a fuck-off big boombox out with that recording on a loop, so I won't just be copying it, I'll be unauthorised public broadcasting it too! And what's more I'll rip some short segments of it and copy them, so I'll have "duplication in whole AND part" covered while I'm at it.

Part joke, part sociological experiment.

You can pay me a dollar if you want to (the paypal account is valid), but like I said above, you don't have to if you don't want to.  Kind of like shareware.  I just figured if anyone wanted or freely chose to donate to the cause, I'd provide the means.

For the record, I'm not offended if no one pays for it.  I would have posted it anyway.

Wait a sec... do I have to report the $1.26 to the IRS as income now?

Also, 000: In the "Kopyleft" thread, I specifically said all my text is KL, but my music is .  For what it's worth.

Not that it matters, but I didn't dig the tune enormously.  It's just fine and I certainly wouldn't criticise anything about it; it just didn't get me off.  So I won't REALLY be doing anything with it.

However, if you link to something on this site, I will pirate your music just as easily as I'll pirate music from Mr. Bigshot Label Band that banks millions.  I'm not going to get into some drawn out lengthy discussion about the ETHICS of COPYRIGHTED material and pirating it.  I am a pirate, plain and simple.  Judge me if you wish, it will change nothing.  Whine and cry and call me a big fat jerk off and preach about how you don't pirate, or only pirate CDs you own, or bands that can afford it, and whatever other nonsense you wish.  That's just fine for you.  I do as I will, and as I already mentioned, it's not a double standard.  I don't give a flying fuck who downloads any music I make IN FULL for FREE.   If I was out to make money, I'd be doing live shows and marketing my material there (which I have at times), and as I mentioned, if there were MATERIALS to pay for, I'd charge for that.    I'm barely going to mention the potential profit to be MADE from pirated EXPOSURE.

I will pirate anything I damn well feel like pirating anytime I damn well please.

Perhaps I wouldn't have mentioned it if others hadn't postured about paying for it.  I felt like boasting about NOT PAYING, all the same, as LMNO invited those to who wished to do so to do it ANYWAY.

Sorry if I'm coming off like an asshat, just giving it to ya straight.

Oh and one more thing, none of that was me, I'm not really a pirate.  All of the previous text here was dictated from my friend Hagbard.  Pinky swear.  And he's gone now.  He can't argue any points.    :D

While all your post makes me do is put another check mark in the "Durko = Freeloading Assbag" column, I couldn't help but notice that you won't pay for art if it's music, but you will pay for art if it's graphic design, layout and packaging.

Never mind that visual art and auditory art are two entirely separate disciplines.

What i was talking about when i said i'd pay for physical materials, is covering your COSTS, not paying you for your creativity.  Of course, I have no problem paying people for their creativity either.  But that's a personal CHOICE.  If I paid for every piece of art work I appreciated, I'd have very little artwork (music, paper, etc) to appreciate.    Also, if everyone who appreciated my artwork paid ME for it, there'd be very few people who have appreciated MY artwork.

The internet will never be regulated to the point that piracy doesn't take place.  So if you're gonna  :argh!: everytime you see it, you're gonna be screaming for the rest of your life.  Meanwhile, I'll be looking at ways for piracy to work FOR me, both as an appreciator of art, and as an artist.

Yuo didn't comment on my statement regarding you and piracy.  You ever pirate anything LMNO?

If so, you mind sharing the CORRECT rules with me, so I don't end up a communist?

um... you realize what a poor argument that is right?

well along those lines, can you buy me a new computer, since you're reading my "work" right now?  i put at least a thousand bucks into the machine that enabled me to publish this "literature".

oh, and you still haven't answered my question...  i wonder why.

EDIT:   Anti-Piracy, Veganism, and people who vehemently oppose litter on account of it "harming the environment" seem eerily similar to me.   For instance, all three ideologies involve masturbatory ego boosts revolving around strong certainty (usually coupled with activism) and completely pointless self-imposed limitations.  Of course, I get dangerously close to doing the same, if I ridicule these people for choosing not to pirate, eat whatever, or not litter.  But the problem lies in their insistence that there's something WRONG with me for not similarly imposing the same limitations.            Do as thou wilt.

However, I often encounter people who think their shit doesn't stink and mine does, because I litter (easily biodegradable stuff, rather than throw it in the garbage where it ends up in landfill; and don't even start that shit about recycling unless you're prepared to state you NEVER throw anything in the garbage and attack everyone who does), eat meat, and pirate data.

Fucking ideological bullshit.  That's all.   And I don't buy it.   I also don't buy that LMNO never pirates anything.  And I also can't believe the audacity of someone who posts something FREELY DOWNLOADABLE, and then turns around and calls you a "freeloader" if you find enjoyment in not paying for it.  You can have it for free, but you're an asshole unless you're deeply grateful and don't support piracy!  pffft!  Suck it pussy.

You mean the one about THEM being wrong about imposing THEIR moral standarts on you?
Or the Crowley-quote?
Because, you know, if veganism is an ideology, I guess Thelema is as well.

Why so? I always thought that you don't have to completely refrain from drinking alcohol to qualify as a non-drunk, metaphorically speaking.

Well, if you run around going 'Nerh nerh nerh, I'm not paying you ANYTHING AT ALL! Har har har!', if you're actually "finding enjoyment in not paying" for someone else's stuff, instead of finding enjoyment in consuming the product without having to spend money on it, then you do seem to be on the ideological-freeloader-fringe, don't you think?

Of course it's an ideology.  I have no problem with having ideologies... I just don't take them so seriously as to look down on someone for not sharing them.   I look down on the looking down, so to speak.   Sort of like being racist against racists, or sexist against feminists/chauvinists.  I could care less if LMNO agrees with me about Pirating and it's ethical implications.  Maybe I haven't made that clear enough.   That's why I stated to begin with I wasn't seriously interested in discussing the ethics of piracy and copyrights.  It's a complex issue I do not wish to oversimplify.   However, don't make it out like I'm asshole, just because you're reality tunnel suggests to you piracy hurts people (even with their previous consent?), while mine suggests it's simply natural and doesn't have to hurt people.  Simply two different positions, and I'm frankly still confused as to what LMNO's is.   What I do know, is that there are a hell of a lot of pirates around here, for one to be getting pompous about copyrights.   I've already thrown a wild guess that LMNO does pirate some things, and simply sets the bar somewhere to accomodate his pirating wants.

In my example, I was referring to people who bitch about ANY littering, and proceed to throw paper and biodegradable products in the trash.

What the hell is wrong with THAT?  you just stated the same thing, one more romantically than the other, and called them two different things.  No I don't think enjoying any facet of the enjoyable spectrum of my fantastic crazy psyhadelic human experience puts me on the ideological-freeloader-fringe.  That whole idea is ridiculous to me.. How can one be an ideological freeloader?  This implies to me that one is obligated to "be" something for others.  I think that's elitist thinking.

Now remember I fuck shit up when debating, so perhaps shave a bit off of the tone here, please.   I don't mean to come off snobbish myself.  It's may be too easy for me to sound a bit indignant, when someone publicly judges me for something I've formed my own ideas about; not even strongly even, but it appears a stronger conviction when on defense.   I can only throw my weight as much as my worth in opinions, which isn't much at all, but for just that much worth, I find that having enjoyed the freeness of LMNO/Payne's creation in and of itself is just fine.

Funnily enough, we all managed to have a perfectly sensible discussion on piracy and copyright up in Apple Talk.  We may have disagreed on points, but we all managed to make sensible arguments and counterpoints, and find some terms of agreements.  Meanwhile, Daruko down here is pissing and moaning and throwing his toys out of the pram (not to mention looking down on people for looking down on people, so add hypocrisy to the list) over something that wasn't serious anyway.

Too funny.

(heh Cain, was going to say the same thing: ignoring daruko's shit flying all over the place -- funny little monkey, him)

anyway, i still wanna make this reply, a thing that's been stewing in my head for the past two days.

No, that wasn't my intention.

However, you have saved this forum more than a few times, and I'd toss a few bucks your way if you wanted.

first, if you wanna pay anyone, pay faust. he is already paying for the server after all.

second, what i was thinking of is this piece in the Art of Memetics. it's about Mastermind groups. when i read this description, the first thing that popped to mind was "hey this is PD.com!" :

Quote from: the Art of Memetics, pirate edition
Using a mastermind group to analyze feedback loops is an
incredibly   powerful  tool,  and    we   advise   designing
mastermind sessions consciously and with an eye toward
regular meetings in the same environment to create a
consistency, which in turn helps support the group mind’s
synergistic effects.
To reiterate, be selective of your input, capture your
output, feed it back to yourself, and continue this process
until you are comfortable with sharing your output with a
larger audience.
Declare your right to comment on all the
media that enters your life.      Record this commentary,
review it, and then comment and react to your own media.
Release the best of your commentary to others. Begin to
take this process of iterative production, selection, and
feedback to a mastermind group, and watch as ideas
assemble themselves out of the raw material of your
experience and the insight of the mastermind group.
This is a kind of memetic autopoiesis, the mastermind
group being the hardware for this program or pattern to run
on. Masterminds are essentially laboratories for memetic
construction. Each person within the mastermind group
will generate unique material in relation to the media being
input, as each person has a different mix of memetic
content, processing capability, and life experience. As the
                                                          149
ideas assemble themselves through the lens of the group
mind, those with the most vitality and appeal are more
readily discernable.     What might appear attractive
internally can become stagnant and stale to a group, while
what seems ludicrous and valueless internally might
become vibrant and profound with a few minor tweaks by
other mastermind members.

the great thing is, we are already doing this, and it's working wonderfully. creating stuff, throwing it on PD.com, getting feedback, reviewing, remaking, etc, until it's something we want to inject in an external network (which is something we're getting better and better at as well).

i was just afraid that, somewhere adding in voluntary $1 payments, even starting as a joke or sociololgical experiment, might throw a wrench in those gears, that are really starting to get up to speed, it seems. but maybe i'm just imagining nonexistant bears on the road or something.

third, in my music collection, i have a special directory labeled "discordiania", where i store all of the discordian audio productions from these fora (several recorded rants and other stuff), and i must say, this one is pretty much the best in there so far. i played it to some friends yesterday, and they liked it as well (except they didn't have the patience to listen to all the words). it's really good, nice tune, nice beats, good work! (btw RWHN's "Spag" makes a good second, music-wise)

Did you're appletalk thread start with posturing about paying, and then flinging shit at anyone who postures about not paying?

Words people.    Racist against Racists is like only Believing in having no Beliefs.  Language is funny.   If you want to make me out a hypocrite, because you don't want to look past the "apparent" contradiction of the language, then so be it.   Forget every point I made, doesn't matter.    Exercise your right to be wrong.

A hypocrite is someone who freely distributes something and then runs you down for enjoying it's freeness.  A hypocrite is someone who endorses this act, and then joins in flinging shit at the guy enjoying the freeness, all the while people enjoying freeness all over PD with various pirated materials floating this way and that.   But don't TALK about it!  We only posture when we PAY!

I've got my finger right on it.  It's right in your face, and you won't acknowledge it because I don't have a certain style or something.   Nope, you can ignore the rhetoric, and get right down to the STFU/No Yuo! statements.

One more thing:  I won't stop enjoying freeness, of course.  There's A LOT more FREE stuff right here at PD.    Start up those paypal accounts guys.  We don't like us no pirates round these parts.  Damn ideological freeloaders.

Probably done ITT, since so far people would rather fling shit than address the real issue.

that is, squat.   :D

now if you wanted an imaged CD, complete with cover art and inserts, I'd charge you for the materials, of course.

line 1 = free for me, free for you yay

line 2 = free free free

line 3 = i'd have to compensate you if you spent money sharing that with me

and as far as your interpretations go...  suck it.  oh yeah, i said that.

My work too! :'(

Even if, as I said earlier, LMNO put more actual effort into his version.....  :p

And I would refuse payment on the grounds that I didn't actually use any valuable resources to create it in the first place.

It was your work too, ennit? And damn fine work at that.

Daruko, I think that the central point has flown right by you; it's got nothing to do with piracy in this case, it's about saying something jerky for no apparent reason.

Maybe you're just unaware that saying something like that is rude, tacky, and assholish. That's why people were trying to tell you it is.

LMNO made a JOKE about payment, and put his email addy out there. Some people listened to the piece and evidently thought to themselves "Shit, I like this enough to send the sap a dollar". Some people didn't. Doesn't matter. It was the "I'm not paying you squat for this" that DIDN'T NEED TO BE SAID that got you criticized.

As for what LMNO's equipment cost him, you opened that can of worms when you started talking about recouping costs.

The lesson here for you is, don't say belittling or rude things to people without expecting to have them taken as belittling or rude. Haven't we been over this before? Just because inside your head you know it's a joke doesn't mean anyone else does. Just because your IRL friends know you well enough to get that it's meant to be a joke doesn't mean anyone online does. Learn to use the fucking winky emote or something, for fucks sake.

Listen, Dippy McDipshit, I was trying to politely and clearly explain to you WHY people jumped on your shit. My attention span is not long enough and I am too good-natured to maintain actual seething hate for longer than about a week, so if you think I'm holding something against you, you're pitifully wrong.

I thought that maybe it wasn't being explained thoroughly enough for you to get it, and, fool that I am, I wanted to clarify for you so you might stand a CHANCE at not coming across as a choad. Clearly, that was my mistake and from now on I will not give a flying fuck if you act like a complete cock and everyone hates and/or ignores you.

Okay okay.  You discordians get pretty uptight, you know that?  yeesh.   Okay, my humor is rude.   You know, it's not like I just walked in the front door.  Maybe for net and some people here I might always seem like an asshole.  Others have talked to me enough to realize I'm a bit rough on the edges, but not all that bad.  So I rub you the wrong way, but you know people have their own personalities, and you guys aren't exactly cuddly and sensitive either.   That post wasn't a direct shot at anybody.. it was me making some dry statements in celebration of free musics.

Winky emote though, yeah.   I'll try and be a bit more mindful of inadvertent friction.

Rudeness isn't the problem for me, Daturdo. Being rough around the edges is even encouraged around here. My problem with you is simply that I don't feel any of your thickheaded drivel.

I'm afraid I don't resonate with this chump role you like to play. In fact, I'm disgusted with how comfortable you seem to be with being a mindless douche.

And I don't think you're always an asshole. I don't think you're completely incapable of making valuable insights. I just don't think it's likely that you're going to motivate yourself to be much more than a well used punching bag.

What is it that you think you're doing here?

Right, and the other problems you've had with other people on other websites are all totally unrelated to your behavior.

Other problems?   Like the thread you dug up from a couple years ago where I was basically fucking with a christian bitch?   lol

What's your point anyway?  That you get along great with everyone?    Your behavior is more evolved than mine?   I mean you are either trolling or trying to make a point, aren't you?

The people I do have "problems" with on here just throw shit anyway, without any attempt at real communication, so what the hell do I care?   You can proceed to tell me now about how I've gotten enough chances and all that bullshit, but saying it, endorsing it, and shouting it from the top of the Ivory Tower still won't make it reality.

Those who approach me in a friendly manner find a friend, and some here have.  Those who approach me as an associate for creative projects find a willing participant, and some here have.  I'll chat with you, game with you, brainstorm with you, do photoshop with you, help you with technical shit if I can, and even disagree with you without attempting to nail you to a cross (assuming you give me the same liberty).

But those who troll me and throw shit at me, get either ignored, trolled, or shit at, which seems to be a rather nice arrangement for them because evidently they enjoy this sort of thing immensely, and would rather interact with me on that level.  Fine with me.  I enjoy getting my cock sucked from time to time.    I mean, I'd ask you what the problem is, but you see, asking yuo Nigel, at this point in the game, is kind of pointless.

I've had enough experience here now to see (even if not fully realized all the time) the futility in going into social dilemnas publicly, unless strictly for lulz.   PM-ing works wonders though.  Funny that.

A quote for ye fellows:

"The perfectionist is bound to be a
neurotic, he cannot enjoy life, until he
is perfect. And perfection as such never
happens, it is not in the nature of things."

How on earth is this trolling? I was being completely nice to you. You decided to be a jerk about it.

In fact, this has happened once before... and then you were all "I WUZ JUST JOKIN WIT YA CUZ, LIKE ALL MY FRIENDS IRL GET MY SENSE OF HUMOR YO".

I actually do get along pretty well with just about everyone. I just don't get along well with jerks who troll me.
Title: Re: Creativity in a Cultural Wasteland

I don't know what posts you're talking about that involve trolling a "Christian bitch", so obviously there's yet another example of you not getting along with people that I missed.  :lulz:

Also, you have said MULTIPLE times, and not just on this forum, that this happens often online, because people just can't pick up on your humor. I was TRYING to tell you explicitly why people took offense, in the hope that it would HELP you express yourself without causing offense in the future.

If that is what you consider "trolling" and "throwing shit at" you, I don't think I have anything else to say to you. Other people said things that were actually insulting to you, but you chose to jump on me. Fuck off, Daruko. You're just a jerk, plain and simple.
