Title: Recruitment (AKA: getting TGRR to shut the fuck up by amusing him w fresh meat)
Post by: navkat on January 02, 2012, 11:21:12 pm
There are a shitton of O:MF ideas we've collected over the years that have the defacto effect of drawing noobs to the site. "WTF IS THIS SHIT?" I imagine them saying. "Principia Discordia? I'm gonna look them up."

Then, they get here and we anihilate them with pettiness, in-fighting, exclusivity and one-upmanship. We think we can't use 'em because they aren't Mensa members or they don't Get Ittm.

Listen: do you know what one has to score on the ASVAB to get into the US Army?

37.

Notable: Banksy, Stephen Fairey. These people have like, money and followers n shit. André the Giant has a career. It used to be called "stupid punks shitting up the street with garbage" and now it's called art. If you can get people to part with money with your self-indulgent bullshit, you can certainly get them to respond with righteous, self-indulgent bulshit of their own. Come on; people are still getting off on Flash Mobs for coca cola and sprite and then taking the train to #OWS sit-ins with nary a thought to irony. We should be making triple six-fig salaries in marketing...if we weren't so fucking socially inept.

My ideas:
1. let's recycle, re-examine, reuse all the ideas-old and new-with a new emphasis on getting motherfuckers here.
2. Branding, people. Logos. HIMEOBS did this fantastically. Let's make a fuckton of Brands that all lad back to the same place: here. The Government does this. The banks do this. Whether you are Fortm or Againsttm, you are ultimately a customer of the same company.
3. Teasers. Make this shit look all shadowy and mysterious. Create the illusion of exclusivity and be inclusive instead of the other way 'round. We've had it ass-backward, spaggots.
Remember how you felt when The Matrix came out? "A SECRET, UNDERGROUND WORLD OF ILLUMINATED MEMBERS?!?" Remember when Trent Reznor started with all that Year Zero bullshit and we thought it was gonna be something awesome? Remember how you felt when you found the "hidden tracks" at the end of the Broken EP and the Tool albums? Hell, half the appeal of the Rave Scenetm was the covert nature and map points.

Look at this: http://www.symbiosispresents.com/

Dude, it's a fucking party, man. Just a fucking party...with a countdown and a mailing list. And good branding. Pepsi will probably be there. Hell, I'd blow Michelle Bachman if I thought drinking her spooge would take me on a secret journey through Wondernew.

Do that shit up right and they'll be lining up to cram fistsful of red pills into their faceholes before you can utter the words "anal leakage."

4. This forum is massive and a lot to read and has an emphasis on "you are a retard and no one wants you here" messages. Being massive is great when it's all labyrinthine and shit. Maybe multiple levels of read permissons? Some more welcoming noob threads that are like "Congratulations, you are now one of the Awakened" instead of "It's just the internet, motherfucker?" They think there's a secret forum? MAKE TEN SECRET FORUMS and elude to each one of them with the last. The Truth is: "it's just the internet, motherfucker," but by the time they actually figure that out, we'll have filtered out the bored, amused ourselves with the dumb and already plunged our diseased claws deep into the minds of th creative remainder. Maybe we'll actually become the club we're presenting. Hey, you believe your own bullshit for long enough, it might actually become reality.

Let's bust out a new coat of paint and some drapes for those Black Iron Prison cells, comrades! I wanna see some "pop!"

Or kill Roger.

5. Easter eggs. The text "tl;dr" should trigger a script that replaces it with "I am lazy and unimaginitive."

And when I said Kill Roger, I meant that literally. Do you know how many tickets we could sell? And we could sweeten the deal by having Nigel raffle off his testicles at the end of the show.

I do not want to think about how many dowsing rods I would need to find Roger's testicles in all that Newfie pelt, and on top of that once you consider the complications of raffling them off while he's still attached to them, and what kind of repercussions that would generate with his wife... it seems highly unwise, really. As for killing Roger, if I recall we once hated him all up, and as you can see, he turned out to be immortal.

I think once I typed :somethinginbetweencolons: and to my surprise, it was an emote that wasn't even on the list. I thought that was awesome.

I was thinking of a recruitment drive myself.

The fastest and easiest way to get people in is people you know. Invite them, the next is a postergasm and pamphletting.
There are a lot of things that we could do, admittedly a lot of it has been down to performance issues, myself and trip have been doing what we can and it seems to be improving.

Another is identifying if a forum is still the best method of communication, all the forums I have been on in the last few years have started dwindling compared to feed sites.

Then there is always, whenever we post something cool: DIGG/STUMBLE/REDDIT that shit. How will our public know how great we are unless we tell them.

Good idea, though i'd replace "tl;dr" by "tl;dr because I am lazy and should come back when I am more motivated." for clarity.

things that would be helpful towards this end:

buttons for "share on facebook", "post this to http://www.reddit.com/r/discordia", blog this, etc

Sometimes I wish there was a "view single post" mode, because I want to link somebody to an awesome idea, but I don't want them to get distracted by the rest of the garbage in the thread.

Changing mediums can be tough... irreality existed for a long time as a forum, then they became blogs, then they became this custom thing that they invented that wasn't quite blogs and wasn't quite facebook... and you'll note that there's no irreality anymore.

But something like a local social network might be a good idea. Maybe the thing is to integrate it with the forums so that they don't fall by the wayside.

I do think that we'll get a lot of fresh meat if we figure out how to operationalize the massive amount of material we have here.

Right now our front page says

Quote
For a large resource of Discordian quotes check out the memebomb database.

Our current projects are The Verwirrung Blog, The Choose Your Own Misadventure Wiki, The Golden Apple Seed Missions and The Discordian Radio Station.

which is a bit dated...

there should be a PDF archive -- some way to click on a link on the front page, and get all the postergasm material. Or all the rants.

I've got a local copy of everything from OKM up to last summer when I made it. It's just it doesn't look very good because it has the forum layout for the pdf of each page.

I've found mods for viewing a single post and for facebook integration but they are both for smf 2.x, I've been looking at making the big switch soon but it means we would lose a lot of cool shit like gen32, the robots and the snailmode for trolls.

If there's a blurb you would prefer for the frontpage just give me a shout and I'll put it up.

This question "How can we turn a forum thread into something an outsider would read?" keeps coming up.

You know what would be really sick?

If we had a button that turned a post into a PDF set on Official Discordian Letterhead, with nice fonts and an artistic frame.

I have an Eriaian smoking club letterhead but,I'm not certain of attribution.

I'dLove a page with a layout similar to cramul.us with overviews of and links to major projects.
Off the  top of my head;
Chao te ching
Black iron prison
Book of baloney
Spuder project
Hey Jim
Musings of a faceless man
Intermittens Collection
Dialeggo Discordia _ excuse mispelling
Failwhale apocolyspe and other stories

And anything else i may have missed. Were a lot better at creating high quality stuff than we are at pimping the fuck out of it.

Placid Dingo, that's EXACTLY what we need - something that indexes the major community output... having a shiny output page will also encourage us to make more / better stuff. I'll make the task a bit easier by hooking us up with links...

it's crazy how many little documents and PDFs we have. As I was going through my scribd uploads, I found 3 more little pamphlets that I wrote. I definitely think it's a priority to create a better outward-facing portal to this material. All we've got now is a random link on the front page, and a sticky thread in the propaganda repository.

At this point, one of the challenges is finding all the output we have already created.

sure!

we should keep thinking about how to present this stuff though,

a folder full of links is terribly tl;dr, but it'll be nice to have one big central repository.

At some point a few years back, St Mae was passing around a giant archive of all this subgenius material. There were hundreds of megs worth of pdfs, audio, video... I realized that we've probably generated as much content here, we just don't organize it in a way that it's accessible -- unless you already know what you're looking for.

Things to consider: pd.com/blog? is it worth talking about this again? It would be the easiest way to present things, but we've had TERRIBLE success in keeping it updated.

Things to remember: a few years ago, trip was talking about redoing the domain's front page. He had a really sexy mockup. What happened to it?

Yes but if it's a list with a nice thumbnail and a 1 paragraph description for each entry it'd be super sexy! If someone writes the descriptions, I'll HTML the list+thumbnails.

If it turns out to be still to many we can cut it up in categories.

5. Easter eggs. The text "tl;dr" should trigger a script that replaces it with "I am lazy and unimaginitive."

I put a lot of Easter eggs in the previous forum incarnation. I will put some of them back, but new ones are better. If you got ideas (anyone) PM me and I'll see what I can do. Some things take longer to code than others plus I really can't get shit done unless I am really into the idea :)

Examples:
- Randomly once very 20 pageloads or so the text "Sticky Topic" would appear as "Stinky Topic".
- The "I JUST PM-ed THE MGT" thread decomposes into ZALGO-esque black crumbles towards the bottom.
- The "TURN EVERYONE INTO A ROBOT" button + the quest to undo this effect once pressed.
- I messed with some specific people a couple of times (only people who I'd know would appreciate).
- The chaotic random postcounts with crazy units were an Easter egg of sorts, I suppose.
- http://principiadiscordia.com/goatse
- http://principiadiscordia.com/secretforums (that one's Faust's work btw)
- there might have been more.

I had an idea about being able to click, drag, doubleclick, etc some innocent-looking elements on the forum and they'd unlock achievements or mini-quests or weird things and such, but I haven't really come up with anything particularly cool.

Seems to be running pretty smoothly now, doesn't it? I saw on the server the new SMF2 changed the DB structure (just slightly), that might mean the DB got a refresher too, I dunno if MySql acquires crud over the years. /OT

Well what Cram said, we shouldn't try to change it. I've seen communities die that way as well. Every change tends to alienate part of the userbase. Maybe not the regulars, but the not-quite-regulars might decide to drop by less regularly if the medium changes. Personally I'd rather see this place end up as a wasteland (not if we can help it of course) than to go down that route.

things that would be helpful towards this end:

buttons for "share on facebook", "post this to http://www.reddit.com/r/discordia", blog this, etc

I could code this, but there's probably plugins for SMF2 available, which would be easier and more fully-featured.

I really don't know if I'd like to see a row of reddit/twitter/facebook buttons on every thread though.

Is there an SMF plugin that can make PDFs? Or did you have some other method in mind? Turning a webpage into a PDF is not as trivial as it might seem (server-side). But it's a cool idea, I can explore some options--unless you already have something in mind because previously my explorations in server-side PDF generation have come up rather shitty.

Wouldn't it also work if we'd had an option to view a single post as a cool letter with letterhead in HTML? People can just hit "print" on that, and it's about a 1000x easier to code.

For example I could modify the "view as single post" template so it looks like a full-page pamphlet, white background, black serif letters, letterhead, Discordian date in typewriter font, etc. It'd be pretty funky if people would link their friends and they'd not get this forum-view but something that looks very oldskool paper print.

Also, Faust, if you'd just dump any PDFs you have and/or find into a directory on the server, I will code a nice index page for it.

The single post method was exactly what I was thinking, PDF stuff exists but it makes the page look like shit, it works off image captures of a page instead of generating a proper pdf.
I'll start putting together the documents folder either today or tomorrow, so I'll show you where it is.

I feel like we should be taking advantage of that Mayan bullshit in a number of ways. Two most notable:

1. Elude to the idea that we are the ones who know what's really going on...that we have...secrets.

2. Totally ignore what year it is and start treating 21DEC12 like it's Y2K n shit. Postergasmertize end of the year raves and warnings about all the clocks wiping out all the technologies. Witness to the people, dressed like that penis from "Friends." Totally retrofy everything. Refuse to acknowlege it's not 1999. Bonus points for annoying the shit out of everyone (again) with that one Prince song and for dropping obscure X-files references.

The ideal effect is one where we've managed to weave the years '98 - 2000 flawlessly with the past four years into whimsical, memetic brain hooks that have the effect on one's mind similar to that of watching all three Back To The Future movies, drinking a Clearly Canadian and wiping your ass with pages of Michio Kaku's Visions of the Future while wearing a faux "blue diamond" knockoff from that movie about the boat where Celine Dion drowns really loudly.

I'm supposed to shut up?

SHUTTING UP LIKE HELL!

That's the way to get it done. If you're gonna shut up, make sure EVERY FUCKER ON THE BLOCK HEARS YOU DO IT.

Look, can you shut up please, I can't hear whether Roger is shutting up or not.

And if the World was ending at the end of 2012, wouldn't the Mayans  be called "The Decemberians"?

Also, I propose we totally ignore the 2012 prophecies, and start making our own prophecies about 2013. Every Cult and his dog are in possession of 'The Truth' about 2012, what's needed is a different spin. So 2013 would be the logical place to start. And I'll stick my neck out here, and say categorically that barring death by natural causes, accident, or bizarre sexual experimentation, everyone presently on this forum will see in 2013 pretty much in the same way as their (great) great grandparents saw in 1913.

(With naive hopes for an age of World peace and prosperity)  :lulz:

There's that line from the father's song in Mary Poppins, where he's going on about how nothing can go wrong, in Britain in 1910.  That's about the point I realized the boy is gonna die in a trench.

Nuh uh. If you wait til 2013, you miss the party. It's like shooting your load on the camera guy, loong after the gang-band has cleaned their faces and gone home. Even a preemie mini-splooge is better.

The fact is, people want another Y2K. The country was doin grrrreat then. Clinton was banging staffers and Mulder still had most of his marbles. I didn't know if I wanted to fuck Leo DiCaprio or Shirley Manson more. Either would have been okay.

I say TAKE ADVANTAGE of the nostalgia! Manipulate the hopes and memories of the hopeful and rememberant! Hose em all down with CK1 and reel em in...only THIS time, we'll dangle the ever-present non-existant instead of something so pedestrian as a  real threat. Pish! We're already too jaded for real threats! We need something fake and ambiguous! Something interesting.

Take advantage by all means, but have the 2013 'AfterParty' ready for all the cool kids. That's real Doom Hipsterism. "Oh, we had the 2013 thing planned before anyone even believed in 2013" kinda thing. Tabula Rasa. That way we are the Illuminati! We are the clever ones. The ones who stood back, while all the others pooed their pance in fear. It's too good an opportunity to waste just for the chance of a good piss up. Y2K was a damp squib because there was no foundation for it. Same with 2012. Partay like a motherfucker, by all means, but bear in mind there will be other parties.

And I shall be on the door, smiling in a "I told you so" way. I'm still deciding whether there will be a dress code or not. Tempted to go for "casual / smart, no jeans or trainers". What do you think?

I mean, if you're going to plan on splooging on the camera guy, I'd wear the fastest pair of trainers you have.

If you wanna know what I'll be wearing, pls consult the BEST IDEA EVER thread. Something like that...but you know; with a slit down the back and a bib.

I want the moon to have babies and I want one of them so we can curl up in bed together and it can sing me songs to soothe me to sleep. Me and my baby moon.

I want a Mardi Gras ballgown made of the pelts of a thousand monkeys. Dyed purple. Floor length, of course: Costume de Reguer.

Laissez bon temps rouler!
I think that is more than acceptable, it's truly inspired. And the bib front is not only daringly controversial, but practical too!
Of course, you would have to be naked underneath, but that's not too much to expect, is it?

Most people are naked underneath their clothes.

Except for Roger.

Oh jesus. Really? I thought you were joking about the testicular pelt.

From the neck down, I have a permanent mohair suit.   :lulz:

And if I don't shave, my facial hair reaches my eye sockets, and my head turns into a paintbrush.

However, for religious reasons, I only shave my face, scalp, ears, and neck (the last due to public decency laws).
