when the sun rose this morning
it brought to light
the emptiness around me

a glass curvaceous canvas
upon which man's hopes and fantasies
are painted with a digital brush

in this 21st century digital world
man is grasping onto his remote control paintbrush

fading in
a glow on my face
warm and inviting
all around i see
the surroundings are soft
a lush greenery
the sound of liquid blue
bubbling as it travels past

a scent pervades the atmosphere
it slowly drifts
wafts into the nose
bringing about a sensation
a feeling to palpable
but equally inexplicable

and it brings me peace
like nothing else that exists in this world
this serene vista
this living portrait i am standing in

and now everything is fading
colors bleeding away
greens drained
blues banished
greys and blacks slither in from the edges
and fill the empty skins
the warm glow from above
slowly shrinking away
into a dull lifeless point
swallowed by the growing nothing
sounds are ceasing
squelched, quahsed, and extinguished
the babbling aqueous stream
dumb and withering away
leaving a grey, cracked rememberance
of the now extinct vibrant scenery

as this world dies around me
being drawn down into a black vortex
a new one starts to enter
from beyond i hear a new sound
a jarring, screeching cacophany
it becomes ever louder
bringing me a nervous discomfort
a dull light starts to fill my vision
dirty white walls encircle me
ahead of me the brown beaten boxes
filled with dusty old memories

and to the right i see it
the source of the blaring
bleeting, disharmonic chaos
blurry green lines
arranged into various symbols
slowly coming more and more into focus
the lines becoming narrower,
sharper,
the surroundings becomeing brighter,
and finally into focus i see
i see
i see that
i see that it is
i see that it is 7:30 AM
time to go to work. 

as the clouds drift
across the last vestiges of daylight
and as the moon rises
to assume its watch in the night
and as the children go in
leaving their games and play
to rest their weary heads
and to prepare for the new day
and as the winds begin to blow
while the neighborhood dogs begin to wail
i turn once again to my friend the bottle
and wallow in my filth and fail.

Once upon a time there was you.
Full of ideals and cleverness.
Then, the wall hit you.
And when you awoke.
And started to look around.
You found that you really hadn't ever been going anywhere.
