And then there's Fallout:Equestria. 2034 pages, 608,000 words. It's a good story. Not great, certainly no Harlan Ellison, but better than, say RA Salvatore or Thomas M. Reid.

Of course, if we obey your orders and take a stand against your tyranny we're just obeying your tyranny. By posting this thread you have made true rebellion impossible.

Discordian Recipes / Re: Pear Pie

"Joy of Cooking", by Irma S. Rombauer and Marion Rombauer Becker, 44th printing (1988) or earlier. Later editions (not sure on the cutoff, I have the 44th) drop a bunch of good recipes for rabbit, sqwrl, venison, etc.

Basic Pie Dough, for a double-crust 9-inch pie.
Sift together:
2 cups flour
1 teaspoon salt
Measure and combine:
2/3 cup chilled leaf lard or shortening
2 tablespoons chilled butter
Cut half of the shortening into the flour mixture with a pastry blender, or work it in lightly with the tips of your fingers until it has the grain of cornmeal. Cut the remaining half coarsely into the dough until it is pea size. Sprinkle the dough with
4 Tablespoons water
Blend the water lightly into the dough. You may need to lift the dough with a fork to help the water spread. If needed, add 1tsp-1tbsp water. When you gather the dough into a ball, stop handling it.
When you put it into the pan, as for any juicy pie filling, brush the bottom crust lightly with eggwhite or a light sprinkle of flour.

1/2 c. butter
1 c. granulated sugar
1 egg, beaten
1/4 c. whiskey

Cook butter and sugar in a double boiler until mixture is thick and sugar is dissolved. Add spoonful of mixture to egg, then stir egg into butter-sugar mixture. Cool slightly; add whiskey. Serve hot over desert of choice.

Normally for bread pudding, but it works with many desserts.

If you just wanted a dessert whiskey to pour over it, Irish mist is great.

Discordian Recipes / Pear Pie

A delicious spiced pear pie.
Cook Time: 35 minutes
Total Time: 35 minutes
Ingredients:
pastry for 2-crust pie
5 peeled, sliced fresh pears
1 cup sugar
1/4 cup flour
1/2 teaspoon grated lemon peel
1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
1/8 teaspoon salt
2 tablespoons fresh lemon juice
2 tablespoons butter, cut in small pieces
Preparation:
Line a 9-inch pie plate with pastry. Add the sliced pears. Combine sugar, flour, lemon peel, and seasonings; sprinkle over the pears. Drizzle with the lemon juice then dot with the butter. Make a lattice top; flute edges. Cover edge of pie with a strip of foil. Bake at 425° for 25 minutes. Remove foil and bake about 10 minutes longer.

*To make a lattice top crust, cut rolled out dough into 1/2-inch-wide strips. Arrange 5 to 6 dough strips across top of filling. Form the lattice by arranging more dough strips at right angle to first set of dough strips, weaving the strips if you wish. Trim dough strips even with the overhang on bottom crust. Tuck ends of dough strips and overhang under; press to seal then crimp the edges.

Use ripe pears, drain extra liquid. This is VERY, VERY good pie.

I refuse to drink anything that tastes worse than Laphroaig 10 yr.
Good Whiskeys and Whiskys I've had, no particular order:
Tullamore Dew - Irish blend. Not a lot of flavor compared to some, but quite smooth and mellow.
Red Breast - Irish blend. Smooth, creamy, a bit sweet. Rather complex finish. Probably my choice of "cheap" whiskey, ~$40 near me.
Jameson 12 yr - Meh. It's Jameson's standard whiskey, not bad, but not great. Get the Red Breast, it's about the same price and better. Smooth, perhaps a bit thin, malty with a bit of vanilla.
Jameson 18 yr - FAR better than the 12. Smoother, more complex flavor, longer finish.
Knappogue Castle 1995 vintage - Single Malt Irish. Probably the best Irish whiskey I've had. Amazing for the price. Haven't tried the '96 or later.
Black Bush - Irish blend. Reasonable, but not as good as the Red Breast, and in the same price range.
Bushmill's Single Malt 16 yr - Good, smooth, but not as flavorful as the Knappogue.
Scapa 14 yr - Very fruity, slightly thin. Long, peppery finish.
Oban 14 yr - Peat and malt are medium in this one, medium body. Good all around, probably my favorite Scotch, though Scapa is quite nice.
Macallan 12 yr - This one is aged in sherry-oak casks, so takes on a sweet flavor.
Laphroaig 10 yr - VERY peaty, with salt/seaweed flavor and lots of smoke. Not for everyone. The strong flavor is an acquired taste, I rather like it sometimes.
Highland Park 12 yr - Probably closest to the Oban, but not as smooth.
Glenmorangie 15 yr Sauternes Wood - Fruity, similar to scapa. Finish like a dry white wine. Goes well with desserts.
Glenlivet 12 yr - Hints of vanilla, long finish, but nothing to write home about. Good, but not great. Not a bad starter whisky, since it's not overpowering like laphroaig.
Glenfiddich 12 yr - Rather complex for 12, smooth, good mix of peat and oak flavor.
Dalwhinnie 15 yr - Needs a few drops of water to open it up. Not as good as the other 14-16 yrs I've tried.
Balvenie doublewood 12 yr - Similar to Macallan, sweet, smooth. Great introduction to single malt scotch. A few drops of water are needed here. Not as sherry flavored as Macallan.

Techmology and Scientism / Re: News from the LHC

In particle physics, >5 sigma is considered a discovery, though they still want multiple labs to confirm. 2.5 sigma is a vague hint of a signal. 99.5% chance that what you're seeing is real simply isn't good enough for the systems involved. There are too many other reactions that could produce the same detector outputs.
Also, the 2.8 sigma two-photon signal at ATLAS is not accounting for the look-elsewhere effect, it drops to 1.5 sigma when you do. When combine with other signals you regain some confidence.

Remember, you need the probability of an event happening, the probability of a false positive, and the probability of a false negative to make any judgements about what happened. These experiments have shown a high probability that a higgs was produced around 125 GeV, but they also have rather high false positive rates. Remember that we're talking about around 5 events at each detector, so +-1 event from false positives/negatives will cause significant changes.

The following is a nice article on the arguments for and against this being a real detection.

http://profmattstrassler.com/ is a really good site if you want to learn about this but don't have the desire/time to really learn about all the math needed to understand it.
We will almost certainly find it or prove it doesn't exist within the next few years.
Then the real work starts: finding the Higgs Boson is the first step to studying the Higgs field, which is what we really care about.

Whiskey.

Its of an Irishman I'm going to tell you
Free from Ireland sailed away
Where he was to he was not contented
Made up his mind for to go away

Early next morning the ship was sailing
Queenstown harbour, golden core
Eight long days he was sailing over
Till he landed in New York

Up the street young Paddy wandered
Each big building caught his eye
Looking up at a big shop window,
A bottle of whiskey he did spy

Into the bar young Paddy entered
Called for a drink, without delay
Give me a drop of that Irish Whiskey,
Four big coppers I will pay

The landlord he jumped over the counter
"Pay me down that bill", he said
Paddy up with a big shillelagh
Laid him on the floor right dead

So the Yankees they came running
When they heard about the row
Trying to kill poor Irish Paddy,
Shouting out, "Where is he now?!"

Irishmen they followed after
Following without delay
Each of them with a big shillelagh,
Made the Yankees run away

May God's success to his Irish people
Many's the country they have roamed
But their courage is far bolder
When they're far away from home.

Shillelagh + Whiskey = Justice.

you guys know I wear a fake because I am completely incapable of growing facial hair, right?

well I can grow it, it just looks all patchy peachfuzz like I'm a teenage burn victim.   :p

Keep shaving, even if there's nothing there do it every day. grows back faster and thicker.
Urban Legend, science says otherwise.
True. However it can be good for the skin, using a real (non-electric) razor can get rid of dead skin cells.
