Think for Yourself, Schmuck! / Re: Memetic warfare

i study biology, and the chaos book was a gift from my father (or maybe i borrowed it(that would explain why i can't find it))

Lotka Volterra sounds familiar but this was more then a year ago, and i'm not very good at remembering silly details like facts, methods or models(how i manage to stay in the university is beyond me too)

It was really fun to learn to think multidimensionally and F-ing hard to explain it to my fellow students(the modelling thing was one of many diverse projects).

How good are you at understanding/'visualizing' systems with 10+ variables?

concerning both the schoolsystem and as an example of a trap in itself:
seggregation by age: If a child grows up being mostly surrounded by people of about the same age as itself and one or two grownups that are soo much older that a connection is very hard to make, and then after school it comes home to parents who are too tired from working all day(and unwilling to talk about work cuz it was teh suXXor)

Then the child will never get a view of how people develop as they become older because for that it needs an almost continuous surrounding with people from all age-groups(preferable multiple examples of each age-group), wich is impossible in the current schoolsystem.

I have the silly idea stuck in my head that putting undeveloped human brains in a culture and enviroment dominated by undeveloped human brains isn't the best way to instill the culture that is desired by the parents.

Then again, the parents grew up in the same schoolsystem, so their culture might be exactly the same.

I have no proof for any of this but thats ok because you don't have to agree with my view anyway.

yeah i ran some simulations of simple ecosystems at uni, something like 1 primairy producer(example: photosynthetic algae), 1 'grazer' and 1 top predator (that eats both grazer and algae)

It weas pretty easy to tweak the system so that it became unpredictable, within certain parameters we managed to create chaos.

If this sounds like cheating just remember that having a consumed food to biomass convertion efficiency of near zero for one of the beasties is the same as removing said beasty. And the something like that goes for all other traits too.

I have a simple example somewhere you can try with you calculator but i have to dig up the book(something something chaos i think)

vinkah: the Hagueish pronunciation of 'vinken'
as in finches, you know the birdies darwin supposedly studied.

it doesn't have to make sense, as long as it contains lots of hard sounds, the K is good(hence the popularity of kanker!)

Or Kill Me / Re: Let the experts handle it.

heh nice rant
though i have to admit to being one of those people who is scared to open up their laptop, mainly because these things are bloody expensive and i have no idea how to wet-nurse my data-addiction without one.

i wonder how the experts became expert if they also left everything to the experts?

ok allow me to recap, marine tosses puppy off cliff, everybody agrees that hurting puppies is bad, and that war is the cause for this, and that war is also bad. Then  a war breaks out(including polarisation and lots of  :argh!:) over what bit of this tangled web was TEH ULTIMATE CAUSETM. And nobody notices  any resemblance between the subject and the thread?

humans make me  :lulz:

Principia Discussion / Re: THUD
March 24, 2008, 12:45:24 AM
I think it would be easier to use the currently and commonly accepted system, therefore i propose using this new system i just came up with:

divide the day into three hours and call them:
- Hangover (when the sun isn't yet straight above your throbbing head(and that shiny bastard is waaay too bright anyway));
- Lunch (when the sun is sort of above you and the headache is over) and
- Beertime (when you already ate that disgustingly hairy thing that was sold as a hotdog, but haven't regurgitated it yet)

and: tihi! you want discordians to not only use but create(!) a standardized thingy for improving coordination... seriously, what were you thinking...? though the idea of stealing someone else's idea does sound tempting...

the part of me that is continuously simulating all possible opinions of everyone i know (aka the invisible crowd) goes aaaaaaaaah freaky braineating zombies!

my other parts are willing to try it, I'll have to find out if i can get brains here(if not it will cause some hilarious conversations). besides even if i don't like it i can always use the leftovers to cure leather.

Emergence.

let me say that again(i love this word) emergence.

"so you're saying that whenever you reach a certain complexity threshold new properties just appear? thats crazy!"
"don't look at me man, i didn't do it."

good book before reading this i never would have thought it would apply to cities.
