Phelps' Group Protests At Soldier's Funeral

Members of the Rev. Fred Phelps' Westboro Baptist Church in Topeka, Kan., are picketing military funerals, KMBC's Micheal Mahoney reported Friday.

The group has made national headlines for traveling throughout the country to picket gay churches, gay weddings, and the funeral of Matthew Shepard, a gay college student who was murdered in Wyoming in 1998.

Friday, about 15 members of the group -- some of them children -- picketed the funeral of a St. Joseph soldier who was killed in Iraq. Mahoney reported that the group stood across the road from the Grace Evangelical Church during the funeral of 21-year-old Spc. Edward Myers.

"The first sin was being a part of this military. If this young man had a clue and any fear of God, he would have run, and not walked, from this military," said protester Shirley Phelps-Roper. "Who would serve a nation that is godless and has flipped off, defiantly defied, defiantly flipped off, the Lord their God?"

One protester had an American flag tied to his belt that draped to the ground. He was holding a sign that read, "Thank God For IEDs," which are explosive devices used by insurgents to blow up military convoys.

Protesters said America has ignored the word of God, and those who defend the nation must pay a price.

"That's the first piece of solid evidence that you have that the young man is currently in hell," Phelps-Roper said.

"The soldier is in hell now, you believe?" Mahoney asked.

"Absolutely," Phelps-Roper said.

If you're trying to get something published you might want to go through an agent, if you send your stuff straight to a publishing company they won't read it.

Some publishing companies will read unsolicited manuscripts; some
won't. TOR reads unsolicited manuscripts; Del Rey does not.

Many reputable agents, i.e. those who do not charge a "reading
fee," will not take on someone who is not published.

Most magazines will read unsolicited material. If you are writing short
stories, just send them out to the mags. This gets you published.
Then get an agent for that novel.

You know, Indiana may be a hotbed of Republicanism, but sometimes we
get something right. A while ago some locals got all hot about teaching
Creationism in the schools, so one local school district added a course
in comparative religion to its high school courses. The hubbub died down
and eventually the school dropped the course for lack of interest.

And, oh yeah, remember the people going through the divorce where
the judge told them they could not teach their kid Wicca? Got overturned
on appeal.

sex with a 16 year old. Doesn't say how old he was when the offense
occurred, nor does it say if it was consensual. However, it is implied
that the sex was consensual since it was said he "had sex" and not
"raped." Also, since he had been convicted and is now living with a
wife, it can be assumed that the offense took place some time ago.

Beyond that, we don't know shit. But what difference does it make?
Since the crime involves sex, why don't we all just lynch the guy?

nor under house arrest. Sorry I allowed an extraneous reference to
confuse the issue.

I have to agree with Turd. There is a quantitative difference between a
40 year old abusing a 12 year old, and a 20 something having sex with a
16 year old. (Since the guy referenced by the OP on the Today Show
is not in prison, it isn't fair to say that the "offense" occured some time
ago?) This can happen to guys 19 who have sex with girls who lie about
their age. It just seems to me that because the crime includes "sex,"
that is insufficient to condemn someone forever. I don't know the
circumstances of this case, obviously, so I do not want to defend or
accuse this particular person, but I believe there are instances where the
hysteria against "sex" has blindly destroyed people in order to achieve
some moralistic ideal which is anything but moral. People need to be
judged for what they are, not what labels society has hung on them.
