Bring and Brag / Re: Eris/Discordia Tattoo
March 06, 2012, 11:45:52 AM
I've seen pictures of some five-fingered hand of Eris tattoos. That's also what I would get if I ever get around to getting a tattoo.

This is probably my favorite golden apple design that I've seen a picture of: http://www.contrariwise.org/2008/09/14/the-golden-apple/ . There's another one in the comments.

Missing the point ITT.
I thought you were quoting the malcom in the middle song...

More on topic, it's hard to be a discordian in a snuggie. For instance, I can not imagine this man: http://www.mysnuggiestore.com/images/Product/medium/prints_camo.png being discordian.

I found them! I actually found them a while a go, but never got around to telling anyone. I figured I'd post it like this so it could be easily saved/shared/reposted without losing context:

It kind of exited me to find out Donald Knuth had actually commented on this (He's math-famous, mostly for writing The Art of Computer Programming and inventing/writing Tex and Metafont).

I thought I also scanned the question and more context for the rock engravings, but I can't find them. If anyone is really interested and unable to access a library with Scientific American archives I would be willing to lend the book again and scan more, although it might be better to have someone with access to a color scanner do it.

I only really drink bourbon with whiskey sours. I like a Woodford Reserve or Jim Beam black for it.
Trying this right now, with a friend. Decent, but I prefer the whiskey.

Apple Talk / Re: They said Hirley0 was a Last Chancer
February 27, 2012, 09:43:58 AM
They say Hirley0 used to be a normal person, until THEY decided that the best place to put their time machine's information exhaust manifold in his head.

He didn't choose to be this way. He doesn't want to be this way. He will always be this way.

He doesn't understand why we don't understand. He understands. That is because his head is full of information. That is because his head is connected to the future.

It's his problem now.

But do they say shitstorm or scheissesturm? I once heard a japanese swear on the x files.

An Anglicism is an English loanword, so it's not translated, just used in every day language.

It has a slightly broader definition that that. From wikipedia: An Anglicism, as most often defined, is a word borrowed from English into another language. "Anglicism" also describes English syntax, grammar, meaning, and structure used in another language with varying degrees of corruption.

For example, I sometimes catch myself saying (in dutch) "Aan de andere hand...", and then get rightfully chastised by the people around me.

Evan Williams Black is what I think of as "the good cheap bourbon". It's definitely cheap, but it's not bad, and it's miles better than Old Crow.

When I can splurge, I like Bulleit, Woodford Reserve, Corner Creek, bourbons of that ilk. Not Makers, though. I used to like Makers and then one day, it tasted like a mildewing pile of fallen leaves. You know how some things you can't untaste?

Yeah, I know the feeling. When I started drinking loose leaf teas I suddenly stopped liking most teabags. Especially the fruity ones. And I used to be able to drink the bottom shelf blended scotch, but now I just can't.

I'm afraid to start drinking good coffee because I want to be able to go somewhere and have a coffee, without noticing how good the place is at making coffee.

Same thing with can't unsee. It's like the arrow in the FedEx logo.

Got me a bottle of Evan Williams! I think it's the Black variant, as it's 43% (86 proof) and comes with a black label. Just gonna try a little...

Color: Seems good. Net entirely sure what color it's supposed to be. Don't quite get why this is part of reviews anyway.

Nose: Sweet, woody, some vanilla

Taste: Still mostly sweeter than I'm used to. Must be all the corn.

Finish: Long and strong. Nice taste.

Conclusion: It'll do. Better than Jack Daniels.

After I do this I like to look up other reviews. Some highlights:

Taste:   Tastes as if someone put vanilla extract in their rectum and then shit in my mouth.

Nose: Candle wax, cantaloupe, burned marshmallow, butane lighter fluid.

It comes from a lot of places. For example: if you meet someone on the Internet that informs you that she is a feminist, it's usually one of the nutcases, and they'll probably tell you you should use S/he instead of he or something stupid like that. These people are also most likely to get on the news (read: fark.com) as feminists.

I don't see how using non-gender specific pronouns is stupid. enlighten me?
Using them is not stupid at all. That's very much a good choice you, as author, can make.

But just using he or she is also a good choice. Any reader will still understand, and she will most likely not be offended. It's perfectly clear what the author means. In fact, he can use the different genders to make whatever he is saying more clear to her.

Maybe that's not a good example. But don't think using he (or, alternatively, she) does anyone any harm, and it feels less forced. Calling people on their choice of pronouns seems "not done" (stupid is probably the wrong adjective.)

Here, a Bourbon is a crappy little biscuit, made from mud, and old horses hooves.

I have to be the asshole from Kentucky here and point out that Jack Daniels is Whiskey, not Bourbon.
I think Dok mentioned that upthread also :P

I'm guessing you mean Woodford Reserve, which is usually my default choice (or Maker's if Woodford isn't available), since there's a nice balance between price and quality. There's better bourbon, but it's not usually enough better to justify the price IMO.
Yeah, I always forget the name. It's good stuff.
