That was in the context of comparing it to raping dead animals so I don't know that I'd offer a huge supply of brownie points.

Ah, right, well I only really remembered that line as it kinda stood out from what he usually says.

A lot of hip hop was homophobic because it sells records. Eminem specifically is one of the most obvious hypocrites for that.

I kinda recall Eminem saying in The Real Slim Shady, something like: "why can't a man and another man elope?"

Yeah, the entire ending was kinda weak. Also, I guess after listening to so many people misuse quantum theory I've kinda become immune to it now, especially in fiction works.

I just finished reading Anathem by Neal Stephenson, it is a one of the best novels I've read in a while, and I would say that anyone who likes physics, philosophy and mathematics would enjoy it, as it is pretty heavy on that stuff. It also reminded me how awesome geometry is.

I just started reading Them by Jon Ronson, after reading some people mentioning it here, it is both hilarious and slightly disturbing.

I'm with P3nt on this one, it is when people continually quote things or quote in a non sequitur way that is annoying.

Also, I find the thing with Monty Python, is that a lot of their jokes, especially the most quoted ones, were mainly funny because they were unexpected, and thus repetition is even worse for those jokes.

From what I read, last year they seemed to have 3-4 sigma proof at 145GeV, but after more data taking this was dismissed, so I guess they are just being cautious.

(ETA: Though stats has never been my strong point)

I found that my 100 level philosophy class didn't focus that much on the classics. There were a couple in there (Hume and Locke spring to mind), but we mainly looked at 20th century philosophers (I remember doing Turing and Searle) (I think the lecturer was not looking to overwhelm students with dense writing).

The problem I had with the class is it was full of people who weren't interested in philosophy and took it as a bludge subject, we had about 300 students in my 100 level class, and then in higher level classes none of them broke 20. So be prepared for some inane and stupid questions.

No more Kim Jong-Il looking at things?
This is indeed a sad day.

You can have the ghost of Kim Jong-Il looking at things, though.

See, here is Kim's ghost looking at a sewing room:

I saw this the other day, it's pretty cool (even if we have a while to wait). However, I don't quite understand how this will provide evidence for extra dimensions, as far as I understand it the theory of quantum fluctuations in a  vacuum doesn't require extra dimensions, or am I mistaken? Anybody with a better understanding of quantum theory wish to enlighten me?

The idea is that the fabric of space time is actually composed of uncountable virtual particles popping in and out of existence. It's believed that it was these quantum fluctuations that actually started the big bang, something from nothing literally. So, considering there's more potential energy in a tiny bit of spacetime than in the entire universe, scientists are attempting to set off some of that and get some more information about spacetime by boiling it a bit. I don't see how this is going to reveal extra dimentions, but it may reveal all sorts of short lived particles for the first time; quantum fluctuations don't require more than 4 dimensions.

That's what I thought, but I wasn't certain.

I'm always a bit skeptical of claims involving extra dimensions, but I don't know enough about the theory behind it, perhaps that is something I should look at over the summer.

I think you have to like the publications page or add it's app for it to show up, as I have read a couple of the articles my friends read (according to fb) and it didn't publicly announce it, but it did ask if I wanted to add the publications fb app.
