Apple Talk / Re: And Christians wonder

When I bought my house I had like six relatives offering to give me some spare christmas lights and a fake tree to make our first Christmas easier.  I loved the looks I got when i informed them that I had no intention of bothering with a tree or all the bloody lights.  I mean, hell, who needs the increased electric bill and I sure as fuck was not gonna put up a buncha damn hand me down lights so I could burn down my newly purchased house.  But the real kicker was when I told em I didn't celebrate Christmas.  Yeah, giving old people coronarys is fun.

Roads cost money, they don't make money...well except for the companies that give the politicians kickbacks and never seem to get around to fixing the roads the earmarks are supposed to have them fixing.

1. How did Joy Behar get her own show?

2. Ann Coulter is a horse faced nut job, which is probably why she and Beck hang out together.  Case in point, NEWS FLASH: all Presidential Assassins are Liberals.  http://www.cnn.com/video/#/video/bestoftv/2009/10/22/joy.behar.ann.coulter.cnn

I watched it here at work and my co-workers found out what its like to work with someone from a military family.  I don't think I have strung that many cuss words together since I was engaged to this gal in the Navy.

But yeah, i am glad to finally know, and I want to post that link on every forum I belong to so that people will get to at least see that there was a chance to stop some of the hell that has come down.  That there was a turning point, and our leaders ignored it.  Please note that most of those leaders are still in charge.

Like I told people for some time now, the crisis has been brewing for years.  Reagan got the ball rolling and no one has done anything to stop it.  The one person who did was beaten into obscurity.  Bailouts don't work in the long run, the government forced the banks to bail out LTCM and then they forced the taxpayers to bail out the banks.  I am glad to see Greenspan looking crushed, I want to see him, Reubens, Geihtner (sp), and all of that bunch hung out to dry.  They weren't the only ones, but they would be a good start for helping to create a situation that brought us to this point.  The fact that Obama is listening to Somers and Geihtner, that the financial lobby is still holding the ears of lawmakers after being proven to be so wrong.  Honestly, the country deserves to fail.  Let it fail and maybe something better will rise from the ashes, I doubt it, but there is always a chance.

Or Kill Me / Re: English, Do You Speak It?

True enough that vernacular does change.  You know I actually agree with the fact that English in America changes every so often.  Indeed English in general changes periodically (We don't speak Old English anymore afterall).

But I learned to speak English clearly, despite the fact that everyone around me spoke with a deep southern drawl.  I wanted to speak clearly and read well in a city, county and state where my peers read on a 7th grade level when they graduated.  I shall retain the right to gripe about the ones who chose the easy way, or rather did not even try, when all it took to do otherwise was to read and to listen.

There is plenty of room for dialect and for colloquialism, but those who indulge in such should be able to speak and read better than what you would expect from children reading See Dick Run, or acting as an extra in a Deliverance remake.

or kill me.

I just don't think it wise for any administration to make ANY media outlet a target of their personal attention.  Not that I think that the administration will actually accomplish much, but they need to at least pick a REAL subject to focus on.

Racism, Hate Speech, Intolerance...when people stop judging each other by their religion or the color of their skin we might actually manage to accomplish something other than war and killing.

Yeah.  Probably not, though.

Oh yeah, I know that.  But the tiny optimist I keep strapped in a far corner of my mind needed to have a word.

How is that laziness? It's not like it's harder to pronounce "ask" or "ambulance". It's just dialect; it's how they grew up pronouncing those words. Like when people say "nucular", or add an R into "wash".

In my opinion everyone in the US should be taught how to speak academic English, but reality is that they're not. You really going to call them lazy for not being able to switch between dialects with great facility?

Mmm, yeah.  I studied, and learned and developed a vocabulary.  I know I don't always speak properly or spell things correctly, but once I realize I have made an error I try to correct it.  I consider it lazy if someone is confronted with a mistake and make no effort at all to correct it.  It isn't about where you were brought up, or your ethnic background.

PHILADELPHIA — Amid tight security and a large turnout of protesters, Dutch right-wing lawmaker Geert Wilders told an assembly of Temple University students that Europe and America must fight an ongoing "stealth jihad" that threatens democracy and free speech.
"Where Islam sets roots, freedom dies," Geert Wilders told the students during his 30-minute address organized by a new student group called Temple University Purpose and funded by the California-based David Horowitz Freedom Center, a foundation that promotes conservative scholarship.
His remarks were met by a mixture of applause and boos, and occasionally gasps — particularly when he stated that "our Western culture is far better than the Islamic culture and we should defend it."
He decried as a "disgrace" a resolution co-sponsored by the U.S. and Egypt, and backed by the U.N. Human Rights Council earlier this month, deploring attacks on religions while insisting that freedom of expression remains a basic right. Wilders also criticized President Barack Obama for his efforts to extend a hand to the Islamic world, saying that such appeasement marks "the beginning of the end."
If the spread of Islam continues unabated in the Western world, "you might at the end of the day lose your Constitution," he told the assembly. "Wake up, defend your freedom."
He also touched on common themes in his speeches, including calling for an end to Muslim immigration and referring to the Muslim holy book, the Quran, as "an evil book" that promotes violence and intolerance.
A question-and-answer session was cut short after the tone of the event began to turn nasty, when some in the crowd of several hundred students began shouting jeers. Wilders' security detail quickly ushered him from the room.
"In order to improve our understanding of others, we need to learn," said Alvaro Watson of Purpose, the student group. "We can't fight for something if we only know one side."
Before his remarks at Temple, a public university serving about 34,000 students, Wilders showed his 15-minute anti-Islam film, "Fitna," which juxtaposes passages from the suras, or chapters, of the Quran with images of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, beheadings, shootings and speeches from clerics advocating violence against non-Muslims.
"I think it's completely wrong that someone who promotes racism and intolerance should be given a platform at this university," said Temple student Josh Rosenthal. "It's hate speech disguised as free speech."
Another student, Joseph Rodrigues, said that being able to voice unpopular opinions is a freedom not to be taken lightly. "I might not like what he said, but I think it's important that he be allowed to say it," he said.
Temple officials issued a statement saying the university "is a community of scholars in which freedom of inquiry and freedom of expression are valued."
"We respect the right of our student organizations to invite people who express a wide variety of views and ideas," the school said in a statement.
British officials once banned Wilders from visiting for fear it would spark violence. He successfully sued the government and visited Friday.
Wilders is scheduled to speak at Columbia University in New York on Wednesday.

A quick glance at my high school's web site shows that they still teach US Government classes. I can't remember if it was required for graduation or an elective. I had an awesome teacher for it, Mr. Goings. Unfortunately he's dead now.  :(

Our Senior Government class in high school consisted of a "Dream House Project" where you made a scrapbook of what kind of house, and furnishings and car you would own.  Oh yeah, and we had some tests, but they were only a small part of the grade.  I passed all the tests, and categorically refused to do the damned Dream House.  I still graduated with a F in government.  It was my last FUCK YOU to Oxford High School.
