Except people ignore the third party candidates, even if they're sane.

Its GOP or Donk or GTFO for the majority of Americans. The rest just see third party as a token resistance that is ultimately meaningless, at least on a national level.

I think third parties are useless for getting power (at least currently) HOWEVER, they are terribly useful for splitting the votes of an existing party. IF Gov Palin were to run under the Tea Party ticket, I think she would suck off* perhaps 30% of the GOP's votes. If the Tea Party were to put up local/state candidates as well, then we'd probably see a split vote in several states. In short such an act would probably solidify a Donk majority for some time to come. While I'm not a fan of the Democrats particulary, they do see to be slightly more evolved in their thinking than the GOP. A little more third and fourth circuit thinking in the Dems, whereas the GOP, particularly the 'Tea Party' subset seem solidly stuck in Second gear, fighting over top dog/bottom dog, worried about territory and ready to fight anything that seems to tread on their territory.

Maybe thats a stereotypical over generalization, I don't know.
