My Economics professor was a pothead.  A Libertarian pothead no less.  He would literally lecture with his eyes closed and nod off once in awhile.  Nice guy though.

I'm not sure what, if anything, changed but the World War II generation seems to be grown up whereas the more recent generations seem to be in a state of permanent childhood. There are no rights of passage or trials by fire, we are all children. We're all soft and weak, myself included.

This is the correct namby pamby age.  We're the Generation X...we're cool and hip and trendy.  As much as I hate the man, Dr Victor Davis Hanson wrote a good book on the decline of the ideal of being a warrior in the west, how being a soldier is now seen as a vocation as opposed to a way of life and how that has affected modern life and politics.  It may be worth a read.
