News:

There are two novels that can change a bookish fourteen-year old's life: The Lord of the Rings and Atlas Shrugged. One is a childish fantasy that often engenders a lifelong obsession with its unbelievable heroes, leading to an emotionally stunted, socially crippled adulthood, unable to deal with the real world. The other, of course, involves orcs.

I'm most offended by that woman's face. It's unnatural. Just look at it.

It kind of makes everything else pale in comparison... it's hard to even look at anything else after that affront.

That is the hell hole known as Comment is Free, the Guardian's blog and editorial site.

It's not entirely terrible: Charlie Brooker, Grace Dent and Gary Younge write on there.  But it is essentially a mix of tepid defences of Labour, identity politics masquerading as progressivism, Yanks defending Obama as the BEST PRESIDENT EVER and badly-executed contrarianism

Bidisha is a current favourite of mine, having been recently introduced to her works.  Apparently, her skill is in advancing gender equality by complaining about how every form of media (except her own novels, strangely enough) are inherently sexist and demeaning to women.  I don't believe she's ever done an in-depth piece on government policy, criminal law or private sector treatment of women, either.

We appear to be doomed by our DNA to repeat the same destructive behaviors our forebears have repeated for millenia. If anything our problem solving skills have actually diminished with the advent of technology & our ubiquitous modern conveniences. & yet despite our predisposition towards fear-driven hostility; towards what we anachronistically term primitive behavior another instinct is just as firmly encoded in our make-up. We are capable as our ancestors were of incredible breathtaking acts of kindness. Every hour of every day a man risks his life at a moments notice to save another. Forget for a moment the belligerent benevolent billionaires who grant the unfortunate a crumb of costfree cake. I speak of pure acts of selflessness. A Mother who rushes into the street to save a child from a speeding vehicle. A person who runs into a burning building to reach a family trapped on the upper story. Such actions, such moments, such unconscious selfless decisions, define what it is to be human
