The bandwidth is great, but the latency is a bitch. 3-way TCP handshake would take forever. RFC 1149 outlines the standard.

You could improve things greatly with a partially electronic pigeon net.  Send the data via pigeon, then use dial up to send a hash, verify the data and acknowledge the packet receival with lower latency.  Lost packets would still be a bitch though.
