I think Carter should have been more clear that it seems to be a minority of the crazy people who are specifically motivated by race. Quite a few of them seem to be the same idiots who were freaking out about Clinton, some of them have been freaking out since Bush, some of them may have legitimate political differences.... Overall, the majority appear to be unhinged, but I don't think race is the major factor... just one of many.

That being said "You Lie" sure sounded like he caught himself right before he said "You lie, BOY!"

It's the Jackie Robinson effect.  Bubba and Hillary didn't have their citizenship questioned, they weren't regularly being compared to Nazis, Hitler, etc., they weren't subjected to the same, endless drumbeat of "Socialism! Marxism!".  The partisan rankor seemed to be more contained to Congress and the talking heads.  With Obama, it has spilled into the streets and seems to be becoming mainstreamed.
