There's only one Band still around that still sound "Indy". You can argue semantics all day, so I'm afraid it's Carter USM, or GTFO

Must be a cultural thing. Just about everyone I know associates some specific traits to the term "indie music" and none of those traits have anything to do with whether or not they are signed to a label.

LMNO, I'd just call you guys "rock 'n' fucking roll", and the hell with whatever other posewads have misappropriated the term.

Y'know, I think I've maybe recognized the cause of the "hipster/indie" disconnect that seems to exist here.

For whatever reason, it seems that a vital part of the hipster/indie subculture is that you must insist that the subculture does not exist.

Agreed.  In my mind, "indie" is what happened when "college rock" started selling records.  Or when DIY1 became HSEDIFY2.

And I think I'll take your suggestion, followed up with "Good Fun in Poor Taste".

I always took "indie" to mean independent label, ie not one of the big major labels which nowadays afaik amounts to Sony who, let's face it probably own most of the small independent labels now too. So, yeah, means fuck all but it was typified by manchester accents and twangy rickenbacker guitars for a while, until all those acts signed to majors and became "britpop"

I was gonna say, I think bands like Oasis, Blur, Suede, Stone Roses, etc., etc,. were considered indie bands when they first hit the scene.

But basically in the 90s I think the "indie" term became interchangeable with "alternative", and for the particularly lazy music journalists, "grunge".

I'd say whatever meaning it originally was destroyed a long time ago.

What

dude, no. I'm sure stupid people use it wrong all the time, but it's a pretty big thing to identify yourself as unrepresented out here, there's a thriving indie scene on Alberta, Mississippi and Killingsworth, people are trying to make it work. It's like the whole SRA thing. I'm sure your average teeny-bopper doesn't know what "independent" means, but most adults are fully aware.

:lulz: Why don't you call Mississippi Studios and ask them what "indie" means.

Because there's a lot of support in terms of studios and venues who prefer to work primarily with unsigned musicians, and a lot of musicians, like Mark Growden and Ghostwriter, who do their own promotion and manage to make a living at it.

It's like the self-representing artist movement... people like me, who don't go through a distributor or promoter to sell our work, but rather sell it directly.

I get solicited by reps all the time, but I would have to make huge quantities of identical items according to the demands of whatever accounts they were working with, and while I would have a steady income and my work would be in chichi boutiques and catalogs, I would slowly, grindingly lose my mind and my soul.

It's like the difference between buying a painting in a gallery... the gallery is representing the artist and gets a cut... and buying it directly from the artist.
