if your desktop is online, but your wireless doesn't work, and your desktop is too slow to work on (I assume that's the problem), can't you plug the network cable from the desktop into your laptop?

or maybe I don't quite understand the situation.

but if it's just the wifi that's broken, use a cable instead :-) [is also why having a spare, rather long, cable is handy]
