H1N1 is not a made-up flu.  It's not being spread so that the pharmaceutical companies can make big monies.  Especially since it's only the government who's buying it here in the US, not the private medical sector.  A BETTER conspiracy theory would be to say the government is spreading it intentionally to CONTROL the populace, in its never-ending pursuit of controlling health care entirely.  Because it's the government who is releasing it to the clinics and hospitals, as well as giving out the guidelines on who is getting the vacc and who isn't at this point.

Seems I'll be getting it today, along with my kids, per my husband's suggestion since his clinic just got some from the county.

vaccine, sorry. in Dutch we write vaccin, I never noticed the difference before.

your baby brother really died because of a flu shot? sorry to hear that. i can imagine you're worried about mandatory flu shots then.

and that news article, what about it? except that it's related to bio research on strains of flu, what's it got to do with the topic? (also, did you check out the kind of paper Toronto Sun is?)

The article mentions that Baxter, a major manufacturer of vaccines used in the US, "accidentally" distributed material containing live avian flu virus to be included in the experimental phase of manufacturing some new vaccine. I find this disturbing. Here in the US, some hospitals and public health departments are already mandating H1N1 vaccination for health care workers, which I happen to be. There's a very good chance that any vaccine you receive will be made by Baxter, who, thanks to the PREP Act, is immune to litigation if one of their "experimental" H1N1 vaccines happens to kill or disable you. I find this disturbing as well. If these fucking idiots don't even know what's in their vaccine, then I should be able to sue them if it fucks me up.

No,I didn't research the Toronto Sun prior to posting the link. I Googled "Baxter bird flu accident" and snagged the first source that I found. I have since checked it out  and the general consensus seems to be that it sucks a little more than Fox News-so my apologies for inflicting you with it.

No. My baby brother didn't die from getting a flu shot. That was a complete fabrication. He was crushed to death in our driveway by my coked-up asshat of a stepfather.

So it appears. I had no idea people were so fond of flu shots. I think I'll return to lurking now.

More like we've had some unpleasant run-ins with some very stupid people who also happened to believe that flu shots exist to hurt people.

Oh pish.  You go away based on this thread?  You got nuffin' when it came to argument.  Fer chrissakes.

I heard there were many in the health profession that were against being made to get the vaccine.  And I know why--it's the proliferation and the possibility of the added virulences.  Since it's a virus that has few antibodies in the young and can, as any flu does, cripple and expire the old, there's an added fury to the fire in getting it "contained."

But the fact that it hasn't added the virulent strains yet, even though it's shown to be quickly proliferate, gives a lot of people hope that it won't, indeed, do so.

Nevertheless, the pain and suffering I watch my 9 year old go through when he gets one of the simpler viruses is enough to make me get double-vacc'd, along with my pediatrician husband and my other child, so that we can spare my immuno-compromised mate (he almost died of aplastic anemia 2 years ago), my asthmatic son and my other son and I will have a better chance of not being miserable.

You can't have lurked long if you think there are going to be those of us WITHOUT arguments of some reasoning on shit like this.

are you saying a newspaper that has to have bikini women in it to keep it's conservative readership's dwindling attention is not one of the best sources for news related to something to do about science?...

Personally, I like flu shots.

But then I was an asthmatic and the last time I caught the flu it took me over three weeks to recover to the point I could actually get out of bed and walk around without wanting to take a bucket-load of painkillers.  Every time since, when I qualified for a jab I took it, and, surprise, I didn't lose the best part of a month to disease.

Now, I have doubts about H1N1 vaccine because

a) it hasn't been sufficiently tested for my liking
b) the rush on production is apparently causing mistakes at labs who are under pressure to produce as much as possible
c) in Germany at least, the vaccine most people is getting looks to be cheaper and riskier than the one more privileged individuals, such as those in government, are recieving, because of the presence of immunological adjuvants used to lower the cost.  Some medical experts suggest this is not suitable for young children or pregnant mothers, two target groups for vaccination, due to this.

That said, I still think getting a decent, working vaccine on those in critical services and the most at risk is necessary.  It's just some of the companies who are doing it are, well, pharaceutical companies, and you know how they are by now...
