Okay, well it's a British soft-drink company vs. Maine

So there is this company called Fentimans, I imagine you on the other side of the Atlantic are familiar with them.  They apparently make a brand of Lemonade that contains 0.5% alcohol.  Some kid in a Maine school had one, was reading the label, realized there was alcohol and brought it to the attention of school administration, which eventually made its way to state officials, and now the drink is banned here.

But what was more interesting to me was some of the comments made about Maine by a couple of folks from Fentimans.

QuoteThe concerns raised in Maine reflects the prudishness of the devout men and women who left England in search of the new world, said Fentimans managing director Eldon Robson.

"Maine is, of course, where our puritanical forefathers went because Britain was not strict enough, and it has been said that Puritans are people who are always worried that someone, somewhere, might be having fun," he said, adding that he found the whole flap amusing.

That's ridiculous.  The article says it has less than 0.5% alcohol, which means that even here in my Bible Belt state it is considered a non-alcoholic beverage.  0.5% ABV is the threshold here in NC.

I just Googled it.  Maine has the same 0.5% ABV threshold, which means this beverage should be perfectly legal there too.

Personally I've nver heard of them. The 0.5% thing is probably why.

It's kinda funny because Mike's Hard Lemonade is a very popular beverage in Maine.  It's kind of one of those Like Mother Like Daughter kinda deals.

I was in World Market today and I saw Fentimans over with the other fancy import sodas, so I bought a bottle.  They had several flavors, but not the lemonade, so I got the ginger beer.  It's very tasty, but at $1.79 for a 9oz / 275ml bottle, I don't see it becoming a habit.

I'm pretty sure that Sprite has a very small amount of alcohol in it too (definitely below the 0.5% alcohol mark). I wonder if they'll try to ban that next.

Anything with a % that low should be banned. What if someone trys to get drunk on it and accidentally ends up rupturing their stomach?  :argh!:

We must never ever ever allow even a drop of alcohol to touch a minors lips. As soon as they even get a sip of the hooch it turns them into raging demons of excess. Next thing you know they'll be sniffing glue, and huffing paint, and out on the streets at 3 in the morning trying to score some Jenkem.
