paid a dime and only farted.....

I really want to know if this is a place I can be me or if it  really is a club, like it seems to be.

I was standing outside, waiting on the dog to shit(I'm house/dog-sitting), and I wondered if this is a club house.  It REALLY seems to be.  I am drunk.  That is the only way I'd share my feeling with the lot of people that seems to frequent this site.  (5 day weekend)

I was standing there, waiting on the dog to shit, thinking about life and how it's like a ciagarette, when I realized it was kind of like this board.  The dog seemed hesitant.  Like It should feel like It was performing a natural action, but It wasn't. As though he wondered if it was okay with performing a bodily function in front of me when I realized that is exactly how I feel about this site.

Can I really trust you to react naturally, not positively/negatively, to anything I post?

I honestly don't think so.

I've been lurking.

I've looked at the older post.  I just don't believe this site is any different from any other site.  Maybe all of you are holding your tongues since I'm a "n00b" under 50 posts, or maybe you just don't give a rat's damn because I'm new.   Either way,  I feel like anything I bring would be completely wasted.  Exactly how I feel everywhere else, including work which is almost impossible.

I'm an active duty, active military member.  I HATE politics.  I don't care what some worthless shit has posted on the internet, or broadcast-ed on the air, or anything else.  I care about me and mine, much like EVERYONE ELSE.  I know my life is dictated by "the man".  I know some of you feel I should care. I don't.  I've contractually obligated myself and I'm okay with that.

What does this board think about that?

Am I a worthless cog in the system or am I a sentient being?

Time will tell. I'm kind of leaning toward dumbass based on this post but that might just be because you're drunk. There are a few veterans here and some active members of the military too. You probably won't be judged on that.

I reread your post and now I'm leaning toward maybe not a dumbass.

I guess time will tell. Rest assured I will make fun of you if it makes you feel better... or if it makes me feel better.

I find that to be passive agressive.

If you really feel that way, save yourself the effort.

Of course it's a club, and the price of admission is the demonstrated ability to walk upright, bare minimum social skills, and the ability to use your fucking brain.  That's it.

If that's too fucking elite for you, then just hop back in sty with the piggies.

Why you hating on disabled people Rog?

Seriously, I think it would be a shame if you didn't post, especially cos you seem to have some intelligence.

I can't speak for the others, but as long as you say something insightful, and I have something meaningful (or at least mildly amusing (well, amusing to me anyway)), I may not reply (unless it is just a smiley), but that doesn't mean that your post is worthless.

Both?
It's not trolling, it's just satire.

More intelligent than the Furby Ninja (in the sense of introspection).

On the other hand, less entertaining.

Mesozoic Mister Nigel

We're all individuals, and we mostly have a fair familiarity with each other based on having spent some time talking to each other. If you can't deal with people who talk to each other like they know each other, then nowhere in the world is the place for you.

If you're willing to approach us each as individuals rather than lumping us all together as a "club" or as a "site", you can get to know us, and us you. You might even find that you like some of us, and dislike others.

If you insist on treating us as a collective rather than individuals, that probably won't happen. Up to you.

I think the best question to ask right now is:

What would you want to bring to the board?

If you've been lurking as you've said, you can see that we're an international, integrated, homophilic, gender neutral* group, with ages ranging form teen to almost dead (Rat, I'm looking at you), a political stance that can only be called "some politicans are more hated than others... but we hate them, too", and we are constantly arguing.

Some of us nurture artistic habits, some are scientists.  Some advocate for legalizing dugs, some don't.  Some have been in the military, some haven't.  Some cook, others know how to microvave things.  Some are highly educated intellectuals, some are from Florida.

So, in the end, what matters is not who you are, but rather what you contribute.  This board lives and dies over content.  Since there's a good chance that none of us will ever meet you in person, the only way we can interact is through what you post on these boards.

So again, the question is, what would you want to bring to the board?

Because they borrow tools and never give them back.

But I was speaking figuratively.  People in wheelchairs are welcome, too.

:argh!:

Well, from what I've seen this board can support several different types of posters... there are those that just post interesting conversation, those that post personal information to discuss, those that want to change the world, those that are jaded enough to want to take most of the planet out, those who would like to free the minds of the monkeys around us, those who would like to turn the monkeys into slaves and force them to build a giant megalith golden apple from which we would rule supreme... err, oh, I mean...

Basically, if you post, we will respond. If your post makes you sound like an asshole, we'll treat you like an asshole. If your post is trite or full of Robert Anton Wilson reruns, we'll likely make fun of you. If your post is interesting, people will probably comment, discuss and generally have a good time.

Mostly even the long time posters are held to that same standard.

Lots of people here don't like to talk politics (I don't blame them, sometimes it drives me nuts too, but I'm contractually obliged to pay attention to it).  If you don't want to talk about it...well, that's why we made a special sub forum for it.  Put it in its little ghetto so people who don't like it know where to avoid.

I think LMNO asked my question for me - what do you want to talk about?  Personally, I like people bringing different interests to the table.  Especially things I don't know much about.

LMNO

The other question is, "do you want your thoughts/posts to be challenged?"

Often, people will have radically different viewpoints, or occasionally a different degree of knowledge than you.

They will not hesitate to call you out if the disagree or think you're wrong.

If you take the example of Ben Mack, his viewpoint was that existence is a series of memes and various forms of marketing.  When he came here, he expected us to treat his views as gospel, and was quite upset when we decided to deconstruct his thesis, and argue the hell out of it.

The "passive audience" doesn't exists at PD.com; one of our unifying traits (most of us, anyway) is the desire to take ideas apart, and really burrow down into it.
