Dark sapphire solitaire pendant set in 14k gold. No chain. September birthstone.

Sterling silver and red opal cabochon ring. Size 7. It's a little bent and I gotta give it a good polish but it's really cool. I got it at a 2nd hand store in NYC.

Sterling silver Celtic knot band, size 6. Yes, this is my 2nd wedding band, but I didn't get much wear out of it. In fact, I think it's cursed, so this is the gift to give to that special someone you want to break up with but don't know how! Or your worst enemy as a "peace offering".

That one is so dark it's almost black...which makes it not worth much. The Ceylon Blues are the most popular. However, corundum is corundum, and if you heat it up enough it will turn into a ruby.

I had another really dark one like that which I ended up hocking last year since it was set in yellow gold...I should have had the jeweler just pop out the rocks (It was flanked by diamonds) and take the setting and I could have had it reset. Grr...

What?  I recognize the words in this sentence, I know they're the same basic Al2O3 crystal, but how does that ruby happen?

The coloration of the stone is created when the crystal reaches certain temperatures. For corundum, I think dark blue is the norm, and then the lighter it gets, the more valuable. Rubies are harder to find than sapphires, so a lot of them in the stores are lab-created from heating sapphires until you get the red color or completely created in a lab. I think at a certain point chromium needs to be introduced. But that's the only difference. If it's red, it's chromium and a ruby, if it's any other color, it's a sapphire.

You know it's a good chunk of rock if the stone has inclusions in it. Which is why I know my ruby is fo realz.
