Okay, I'll explain.

When you play Mario Party, and god help me I have played Mario Party, sometimes Bowser will show up and do terrible Things to you.  Sometimes he takes everyone's money, and splits it all between everybody.

Personally, I'd love it if that happened in America.  Oh Bowser, where art thou?

Cain

Cancelling everyone's debt would not only likely have similar results, but also fuck the banks over.  If Bowser did that, he would get my vote.

Interestingly enough, cancelling debts is what Athens' greatest ruler did, to overcome their financial crisis.  Most of the land and wealth in Athens belong to the aristocratic Eupatridae, who often exercised these powers in order to bankrupt farmers and small businessmen, so they could buy up their land and make them work on it as serfs or slaves.  In Athens, a serf or slave was no longer a citizen, without a vote or voice.  The whole situation spun massively out of control, with a huge economic gap between the Eupatridae and the poor, and revolution was not out of the question.  To solve matters, Solon was bought into office, where he immediately cancelled all debts, released most from their slavery, redistributed farm land and then went on to write the Athenian Constitution, replacing Draco's Code (where our word draconian comes from) and creating the precursor to modern democracy.

I should probably rant on this.
