News:

There are two novels that can change a bookish fourteen-year old's life: The Lord of the Rings and Atlas Shrugged. One is a childish fantasy that often engenders a lifelong obsession with its unbelievable heroes, leading to an emotionally stunted, socially crippled adulthood, unable to deal with the real world. The other, of course, involves orcs.

Since AT&T exclusivity ends in 2010 anyway, couldn't they just wait & switch carriers? AT&T will be forced to compete.

I mean, it's not as fun as making a big deal about it now, but just sayin'.

It's only rumored to end in 2010. That said, I wouldn't be surprised if Apple makes a CDMA version of the iPhone and it ends up on Verizon. Verizon seems to think that there's a good chance this will happen.

The contract is up in 2010 and it doesn't make any financial sense for Apple to re-up with AT&T so I really doubt they will. AT&T is trying to negotiate another year of exclusivity, but Apple would be stupid to do it and Apple isn't stupid. If Apple coincides the launch of a new generation with the end of exclusivity, they will take possession of a huge swathe of the smartphone market in one fell swoop. I really can't imagine how AT&T could present anything that would compete with that.

I've seen dumber shit happen. That said, I hope they do end up on other carriers. AT&T was the only reason I didn't get an iPhone. That said, I'm happy with my phone for now and I'll probably wait for the next or next next generation of smartphones before I get another.

Well, yeah. This entire country, for example.

Yes, it's highway robbery--but it serves them right for getting iPhones.   :argh!:

It's not just AT&T that sucks--it's Apple.

I'm not concerned about the "morality" of products, just whether or not they work like I want them to work.

I haven't seen an Apple product that worked the way I wanted it to work since the Apple II.

also, technology issues aside, AT&T is the only cell phone company I've ever had whose customer service was worth a shit.

they're the only one of the big american telecoms I haven't used.

US Cellular and Verizon are awful.

Sprint is terrible.

Their coverage leaves something to be desired, but I'm usually only out of range when I'm visiting my parents in BFE.
