i watched the clip when it was on another board, and couldn't really make out the sound very well.  It's interesting to hear a different perspective, and i'mma have to watch the interviews and the clips again when i get home....

At the other forum, somebody mentioned the spit shine comment, but said it was in response to the younger guy asking for money.
that's a dick thing to say to somebody pan handling, but not really racist...
somebody commented that the immediate response from the younger guy was to call him 'pinky' and call him racist...

the old guy said the kid had a switchblade?  wtf...  why would he say that knowing that the video of the incident was all over the intarwebs?

huh.... interesting... now i want to see more, even though it's just soap opera...

the "younger guy" is 50. He never asked him for money at all, and the "pinky" insult came from one of the women in the peanut gallery, not the guy himself.

well, he is. whether you believe it or not has little to do with it. FFS, this is all over the internet, and both of these guys have been datamined to an insane level. The dude tells the interviewer that he's 50. If he were lying, the entire half of the internet that's on Tom's side would be letting you know about it.

My guess is that nobody would have been filming it if shit hadn't already have been started, so who started it is going to remain a case of one man's word against another.

All I am going to say is, as sensitive to the "racial tensions" issue as I might be, if a crazy old vet says some crazy shit to me (and it has happened) it is not an excuse to pursue him and make it violent. Regardless of who started it, the black dude was in the wrong from the moment crazy old white guy got up and walked away from the altercation.

There is NO racial slur that validates initiating violence. Words are words.

Tom said some stupid racist stuff and is likely to get killed if he keeps that shit up. He gets some sympathy for being a vet whose brains were scrambled by the war, but that's no license to walk around being a racist fuckwad.

I have to agree with Nigel that Michael was nuts to risk his life (Jesus-fucking-Christ-in-the-asshole Tom is the size of a RHINO and about as intelligent as one to boot) over idiotic comments from a drug-addled vet. Still, it's understandable to not take racist bullshit sitting down, even if that means you might get seriously injured. But throwing punches over a few nasty comments from a stranger rarely seems worth it.

The message Michael was sending people on the bus (which he said was a major motivation in doing what he did) was that the way to deal with racist language is with physical confrontation. If everybody did that there would just be a lot of dead people of many skin tones who no longer can support their families. Better to let the racists live in their delusional world and spew retardation until they start acting on their beliefs in meaningful ways. Then it's time to lob bricks.

Of course, all this is easy to say in sober hindsight as a white guy.
