RAW uses the word "Jewish" and the various distinct meanings [of the religion(creed)//born of a Jewish mother(cultural)//of Jewish ancestry(genetic)], as one of the reasons to avoid 'is of identity' statements. They lead to sloppy thinking due to lack of context.

I disagree with the "Latino" racial genre. Almost every country in Europe was once under control of Latin-speaking Rome and the Latin languages or Romance languages are more than just Spanish or Portuguese, and being European Spanish or Portuguese does not make one Latino either, but they certain claim to be, so why the FUCK isn't Italian Latino? Italy the place of the birth of the Latin language, and home to many thousands of original explorers that found and interbred with the native peoples of the Caribbean. Shouldn't Romania be Latino? Their language and cultures are much more closer to the Romans that founded it.

One could argue that it's because of the mixing of cultures and skin color of the native people of Central and South America, you know, Native American. At the same time, a lot of modern Americans are part native, in fact, most of us probably are, much like the Latino people aren't 100% either. So, they get their own race, regardless of how intermarried they are with European Caucasians, if at all. Herbert's father was born and raised in Puerto Rico, and had blond hair and blue eyes. That doesn't seem very native-like to me. That screams European.

Hispanic comes from Hispaniola, the island that Haiti and the Dominican Republic are on. In theory, this would make people of those countries the only Hispanic countries, amirite? Haitians are predominantly black and speak Creole French, also a Romance language, but not nearly as close to Latin as say, Spanish speakers from the DR. Does this make them also Latin American? Or does it make them African American?  :? Is it live? Or is it Memorex?

If someone is born in Hawaii or Guam, does that not make them a Pacific Islander? My best friend from high school played affirmative action like a game, and got so many scholarships and grants just for saying he was Pacific Islander because he was born in Guam.

This is why I don't like race. It's useless, and it raises too many questions. Back in the day weren't there just 3? Caucasoid, Mongoloid and Negroid? I know those terms are WAY out of date and now considered offensive in some ways, but it seemed much more simple.

Also, ethnicity is different than race.

I see what you are saying Suu, and although much of it was stated as questions, it just brings up more questions. (Wouldn't Haitians and Dominicans already be mutt?  I seem to recall that in the Dominican Republic they don't view race anything like people in, say the US, as they are so mixed.)  Most in Europe would be mutts to some degree, I suspect, even if they are just a mix of European blood (highly unlikely due to the amount of traveling and trade).  I would guess that most of Asia and Africa would also fall into this category for the same reasons.  I highly doubt that the people who made it to the Americas so long ago made it with "pure blood", not that it mattered after the Europeans arrived.

Just out of curiosity, what do you get if you cross Euro-mutt and "Native" North American probably-mutt with Dominican mutt?  This isn't me (I am an even wider variety of mutt), but I would guess you will end up with mutt if you look at anyone close enough.

Also, as I understood it, latino and hispanic fall under the category of ethnicity.  I just checked the definition of ethnicity at http://dictionary.reference.com/define/ethnicity , got nothing that clarified it so that I understood, so I looked up ethnic, some definitions of which suggested that race is ethnicity, but other definitions make it sound like "American" could be an ethnicity.  Is this just another way to propagate "us vs. them" or is there a commonly accepted understanding of it that permits practical usage of the word?

I put Latino down for years because I'm mostly Italian. I still do it for job apps to burn affirmative action, after all, my last name IS still a Spanish one for the next couple months.

I usually mark "prefer not to say" on applications because I don't want that interfering with getting into a school, which is pretty much my focus right now.
