Second off, abuses happen when people are in positions of absolute power over others. It happens all over the world. (Not that that is an excuse.) It is not just an American problem. Passing the buck by pigeon-holing it to one national group, or by blanket-and-vapid statements about 'human nature(tm)' do absolutely fuck all.

In my opinion this sort of shit has been symptomatic of human relations for the past five thousand years across the globe. So it is no surprise, even though it is sickening.

You will be happy to know that according to Confused Cornflakes that the Romans did not engage in any such shit, so maybe we should emulate them and start up a republic, huh?

On the whole, the Caesars were just a disaster, save for Augustus, Aurelius, and Vespasianus.

Constantine?

The Roman Expansion destroyed the Roman republic.  For this reason alone, empires are bad.

NO system that places a man above the law is good.

I tend to view Constantine not as a Roman Emperor, though he certainly controlled Rome, but as the first Emperor of the Byzantine empire.
