"As difficult as cleaning the oil over the next several months will be, mopping up the bureaucratic slop that led to the Gulf spill will be far tougher." - TIME, June 21st issue

Does this bother anyone else here?
not quite there yet.

Cain

Depends how many other oil rigs are close to blowing up due to failed regulatory bodies.  1 massive plume of oil leaking into the ocean is better than, say, 17.

Captain Utopia

To me, that quote speaks of relative difficulty, not priorities.

It still bothers me that the politics behind the oil spill are harder to clean up than the oil spill itself.

It's all politics.  It just so happens that it's easier to get political support for cleaning up an indisputable crisis.  As Cain pointed out though, if there were 17 spewing wells, then the balance would shift.

EDIT: Ah - political priorities, I see what you mean now.

It just takes a long time to pin the blame on someone, is all.

Hayward is going to be the scapegoat if/when it finally gets capped. He'll get a huge golden parachute and they'll bring in some young executive to apologize profusely. And no, we don't need to do anything about the regulation system. We really learned our lesson this time, now let's get back to drilling a mile below the ocean. There's no way this could happen twice. Trust us.
You cannot fathom the immensity of the fuck i do not give.

While the rest of your statement is true, heads will also roll in MMS, to placate the public (read:  the right wing nuts).

That would actually make me happy too. Too many of those bastards are former oil company employees that were looking the other way for golf outings and football tickets. We need a bunch of hard asses to go in there with pliers and fuck some shit up.

Oh, no argument there.  But it won't be done to clean house, and the truly guilty will not be punished.  Look for the firing/resignations of several deputy secretaries and lesser staffers.
