So, my yahoo email account (which I only use for registrations, etc) spontaneously sent out spam emails to my address list yesterday.  Which means, i suppose that it got "hacked", but I'm not sure by what means, whether it was through an email, or a virus (not likely), or done by hand.

I cleaned out my mailbox, and changed my password.  What else do I need to do?

Explain to everyone in your contact list that you have not turned into an Indonesian Prince attempting to defect to America.

But I am an Indonesian Prince attempting to defect to America.

Srsly, is that account now useless, or is there a way to assure it's not gonna happen again?

Jasper

Only way to fix it for good is to find out how it happened in the first place.

LMNO

Well, it is linked to my facebook... maybe they got through that way?

I'm woefully unaware of how these sorts of attacks work.

Boil it, then stick it in an airtight bag for 6 months.

Scan your home comp for virus / spyware / etc to be safe.  Cycle through a couple to be paranoid safe.

Anyone ever think about how Richter inhabits the same reality as you and just scream and scream and scream, but in a good way?   :lulz:

If you changed your password, you're probably good. Run virus scans, as Richter said, but more likely someone got the password to your e-mail address through phishing or brute force or the like, rather than anything physically on your computer.

My yahoo account is now sending out messages asking people to click on a link.

I didn't send that.  I suggest you don't click on the link.

Huh.  Sounds like spyware, not much else can do this sort of thing AFAIK.

I won't go so far as to say stop using windows, this will not be that thread, but there are some free anti-spyware kits available on filehippo.com that would probably make it better.

Rumckle

Don't forget to change your "forgot your password" question too.
It's not trolling, it's just satire.

That's what mine did, too.  I'm thinking someone cracked Yahoo.
