I wasnt sure where to put this, as there's not really a facepalm section.

QuoteRescue efforts under way after explosion in Gulf

[Posted at 11:53 a.m.] U.S. Coast Guard Petty Officer Bill Colclough tells CNN that 12 people from the production platform are in water immersion suits as they await rescue.

Colclough told CNN there are reports the production platform is still on fire.

"We don't know what caused the rig to catch on fire," he told CNN, noting the incident is under investigation.

Asked about concerns regarding oil leaks or pollution, Colclough said "there are reports the rig was not actively producing any product, so we don't know if there's any risk of pollution."

The incident comes nearly five months after a separate explosion on a BP rig in the Gulf triggered oil leak disaster.

[Posted at 11:43 a.m.] U.S. Coast Guard Petty Officer Bill Colclough tells CNN that all 13 workers involved in the production platform explosion are accounted for, but one person is injured.

Coast Choppers are on the way to the site 80 miles south of Vermilion Bay.

[Posted at 11:33 a.m.] An oil production platform has exploded 80 miles off the coast of Louisiana, with 12 people overboard and one missing, the Coast Guard said Thursday morning.

Rescue attempts are under way for at least 12 people, Coast Guard spokesman John Edwards told CNN. 13 people were on board the production platform total, Edwards said, noting 12 have been accounted for, but one person was missing.

The accident took place 80 miles off the coast of Louisiana on the Vermilion Oil production platform 380, which is owned by Houston-based Mariner Energy.

The Coast Guard has multiple helicopters, an airplane and several Coast Guard cutters en route. It's unknown if there are any injuries.

God thinks exploding oil rigs are funny.

I don't get his sense of humor but if I don't laugh, he'll smite me.

Ah, well. The CEO of Mariner Energy can always just take a little vacation on his yacht. I know that always makes me feel better whenever I destroy the enviroment.

So I was in line for lunch and the person ahead of and behind me discussed this issue:

Did you hear an oil rig blew up?
Yes, I bet its tree huggers, or terrorists...
Yeah! Or the President, I don't trust him not to do this sort of thing!

Insufficient.  Predictive maintenance should be the only standard.

Reactive maintenance:  Something fucked up.  Fix it.

Preventative maintenance:  Do these things to minimize fuckups.

Predictive maintenance:  Gather data to understand when things will fail, and change them out after 80% of their projected lifespan.

I am required by Tucson, Pima County, Arizona, and the federal government to be in a predictive mode.  I don't see why oil rigs, which are far more dangerous, aren't also required to be in that mode.

actually, no. It will likely be portrayed that way in the media because sensationalism generates more revenue, but the reality is that it was a combination of equipment failure (probably due to manufacturing defect, as the crew on that rig are extraordinarily safety and maintenance-conscious) and mild geological event.

One of my good friends was on that rig, and is hopefully one of the 12 that are accounted for. His dad used to be in charge of that rig but was recently transferred out to another rig. He's a very stand-up guy and there's no way he would have his only son on a rig that he didn't feel exceeded every safety metric there is.

This sort of stuff is a fact of life when half of the people you know are MMA graduates who work in the maritime industry, and the reality is that the vast majority of them do everything they can to minimize this sort of thing. And as far as the companies and upper management goes, most of them are guys who started out working in the field, and even the ones that would otherwise be careless shitnecks are usually motivated by the fact that with current laws and regulations, it's far more expensive to have fuckups and documentable shortcuts in maintenance (and EVERYTHING is documented, usually in triplicate) than it is to just do it right the first time.

I'd like to tell what I know about the Deepwater Horizon explosion, but since I'm not really supposed to know what I do I don't think it would be wise of me. Suffice it to say that while BP's PR department should all be fired, what happened on that rig was something absolutely unpreventable with current technology. It couldn't be planned for because it had literally NEVER happened before. There was no human error or lapses in maintenance or manufacturing defects involved. And the people that died in the explosion did so because once they realized what was happening, they had to make a choice between getting themselves out right then and there or taking a few seconds to warn the rest of the rig's crew and try to stop the explosion from spreading any further. Everyone that survived on Deepwater Horizon owes their lives to the people who died, quite literally.

re-reading the above post, I fear it may come off to some as a variation on "FUCK YOU, MY MOTHER DIED BECAUSE..."

It's not, I'm just trying to share some information I have that is not publicly available and explain why I'm in a position to have that information.
