QuoteOBION COUNTY, Tenn. - Imagine your home catches fire but the local fire department won't respond, then watches it burn. That's exactly what happened to a local family tonight.

A local neighborhood is furious after firefighters watched as an Obion County, Tennessee, home burned to the ground.

The homeowner, Gene Cranick, said he offered to pay whatever it would take for firefighters to put out the flames, but was told it was too late.  They wouldn't do anything to stop his house from burning.

Each year, Obion County residents must pay $75 if they want fire protection from the city of South Fulton.  But the Cranicks did not pay.

The mayor said if homeowners don't pay, they're out of luck.

The guy is responsible because he didn't pay his fee... and he admitted that in the interview...

The firemen are responsible because they are humans and chose (orders notwithstanding) not to help.

Stupid Humans.

The fire is responsible because it ate the whole house.

75 dollars a year isn't much, but there should be a law that they'll still save your house, but give you a bigger bill if you haven't paid.

It's bad for the town's economy to let a house burn over seventy five dollars.

Whoa this is popping up all over the place. And just as my 2 bits: Dude's stupid for assuming he'll get a service he didn't pay for, County's stupid for not taxing to maintain a fire department, mayor and fire chief are stupid for withholding service.

To sum up: People are stupid.

It can't have been a tenth the worth of the house, still.

I take it back.

But there should still be laws in place to protect houses.  Paid or no, they're worth too much to just let go like that.  Even after the housing bubble popped.

I agree that the house should have been protected... but mostly because the firemen should have behaved like human beings.

South Fulton police arrested one of Gene Cranick's sons, Timothy Allen Cranick, on an aggravated assault charge. When officers arrived at the firehouse Wednesday, South Fulton Fire Chief David Wilds was in an ambulance receiving medical treatment.
