Sen. Kyl: "No tax cuts, no START treaty"

This has to be one of the most reckless moves made by Republicans any political party anywhere in recent years.  Playing politics with terrorism is bad enough, but at least the stakes there are relatively low.  Low compared to the stakes when you're talking about nuclear weapons, anyway:

http://thehill.com/homenews/senate/131413-kyl-tax-deal-needs-to-get-done-by-monday-to-pass-start-in-lame-duck

QuoteKyl said if negotiators don't reach a deal on the Bush taxes within a week "then you're not going to have time to do START."... The emerging conventional wisdom has been that Senate Republicans would agree to ratify START if Obama and Democratic leaders agreed to a temporary extension of the 2001 and 2003 tax cuts.

If the Russians get screwed by the American government again, they're probably never going to have a leader as compliant and pro-Western as Dmitry Medvedev ever again.  The ex-KGB types will revert back to their 1993 stance of extreme paranoia and distrust, and anyone approaching the Presidential seat will have to share that viewpoint.  They're not going to allow another Boris Yeltsin to piss away the work they've done in the last decade.

Yeah, but Obama might be a Muslim. rich people need more money.

Fixed. But honestly I'm not surprised. Republicans filibuster everything. It's retarded. And they don't care about Russia. As a matter of fact it probably suits their purposes to have tensions with Russia again. They get elected through fear and paranoia.

Russia will have to build up its nuclear forces if the United States fails to ratify the New Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty the two countries signed this year, Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin warns in an upcoming CNN interview.

"That's not our choice. We don't want that to happen. But this is not a threat on our part," Putin told CNN's Larry King in an interview to air Wednesday. "We've been simply saying that this is what all of us expects to happen if we don't agree on a joint effort there."

And, as history shows, that will lead to a security dilemma, which just makes the likelihood of something stupid happening and a ridiculous escalation in hostilities that more possible.

The entire geopolitical face could alter practically overnight. China would be forced to back North Korea even more and I suppose it is possible that Russia would then consider helping Iran with their nuclear program. India would take some action as well. Destabalization all around.
