So it's the end of the year.  That time-honored tradition where news media outlets look back at the new stories they fabricated, sensationalized, or otherwise blew out of proportion.  They also like to make lists and retrospectives.  Like for example, notable people/celebrities who kicked the bucket.

MSNBC.COM just posted a slide-show of 35 notables who died in 2010.  They made sure to remember Gary fuckin Coleman but nowhere is there any mention of one of the most iconic figures in Metal, Ronnie James Dio.

Yeah I know, just a stupid media outlet, but I think it highlights how Metal as an art form and music genre continues to be discounted in this country.  This is why so many American metal bands will release albums in the States, but do most of their touring in Europe and Asia.

Anyway, a big F-U! to MSNBC!

Who?

He was the lead singer of Black Sabbath for a while, did some solo work, and remained short his entire life.

Ah! Thanks.

He was an inspiration to vertically-challenged men everywhere.

He also brought us the devil horns.  Though Gene Simmons claims he invented it.

Ozzy-led Black Sabbath got the whole metal ball rolling.  But, for me, it was really Dio, Judas Priest, and Iron Maiden who really gave Metal its direction and I think they largely were responsible for defining the genre.  There are very few voices that were as iconically Metal as Dio's was.

I am endlessly impressed by Dio's utter lack of charisma, combined with the most oddly "off" fashion sensibility I've ever seen on stage.

Lack of charisma?  Ronnie James Dio?  He is, err was, very humble and unpretentious as rock stars go, but I wouldn't say he lacks, gah lacked, charisma.

Still hard to remember he's gone.  For a little guy he had a huge presence in metal.
