I've mentioned it before. Comparing pre-modern literature to current politics is useless. There are similarities, but today's technology makes it almost all irrelevant.

...Plus, Machiavelli wrote The Prince as a joke.

Now, now. Facts will not do anyone any good here. Move along.  :D

FUCK YOU! MY UNCLE SAM DIED FROM NOT USING FACTS!

Add red, white and blue. Put in news feed now!!!

Ah... You know what, I'm going to just have to drop this. I can't cite any sources aside from wikipedia atm... But I can't.

https://secure.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/wiki/The_Prince

Suu, at first I thought your statement that "the Prince" was written as a joke was a load of crap, but reading down to the bottom of the article about the possibility of it being satire swayed me a bit. Still, it's all speculation, as I'm not aware of Machiavelli having said anything on the matter, and if Machiavelli never said it himself, it probably isn't appropriate to be stated as fact... However, if he did say such a thing, that sort of blows my argument to shyt. (this is one of the many instances where some of that there book learnin' might do me a bit of good, but... Sigh.)

As far as Machiavelli not being up to date, this is true. People don't go to war with catapults, horses, swords and spears anymore, but neglecting the human dynamic present in the works is to disavow "technology" that hasn't changed all that greatly on a basic level. It would be like arguing that "The Art of War" or "The Book of Five Rings" are no longer applicable. While the human brain has been thought by some to have evolved over the years, the basic instincts have not changed quite so much as the thought patterns (citation needed?). It is not irrelevant, it is extremely dated, however, and I understand that it should not be the ONLY thing one reads. Modern technology changes a lot. If you can point me in the direction of a few things completely relevant, I will be grateful... Also, I need to expand beyond three books on strategy someday (too skeptical of ninja books to count those), well, when the resources are present, I'll do so.

Charley Brown, I am not a student in the sense that I go to school, though I do read a lot of stuff, not sayin' that qualifies me to run off at the mouth as I usually do.

Note that I am not criticizing people for going to college. I must admit that those who do are often much more disciplined than I could hope to be, and, in many cases, know more interesting stuff than I could shake a stick at. This alone does not invalidate my view either, but I can see how it takes a huge step in that direction. I am also aware that many members of this forum are more intelligent than I, though I'm not about to jump to the conclusion that this always makes them always right.

I was, likely, wrong to say Arpaio is Doing It Wrong, this was opinion, and we know what they say about those. I just find it hard to think that there is anything right about what such a scumbag does, which means I'm a bit biased.

And Cain, I was not trying to slobber shit on you. I've read a number of your posts and have found them quite insightful, and I'm pretty well convinced that you have a firmer grasp on almost any subject matter than I could hope to have. Again, this does not mean I won't say something if I do not necessarily agree with what you say, but that I will try to keep it to a minimum. This could be taken as flame bait, or a request for more input relating to specific issues I've brought up (or any number of ways, really). I understand that you may answer those any way you like, but I'd prefer the latter.

Roger, I enjoy your replies and hope for more in the future. And a script? How so?

Glittersnatch, I don't personally have any problem with Roger. I cannot answer for Roger, however, I would like to think that this is just what he does for fun, though what I would like to think and what is true are usually completely different things... For all I know, he could really be the jerk that he sometimes appears to be in text format.

There are many ways to learn, but there are so few sources worthy of trust. For this reason, a person should test the water before jumping in. Please do not mistake a friendly poke for an attack.

Prince Glittersnatch III

The Prince was a really long job application.
I might also add that he didnt get the job.

Glittersnatch would be a rather unfortunate condition, if a halfway decent troll name.

^That makes more sense to me than it being a joke, still, it could have been.

Phox

But considering who it was addressed to, and the state of Italy at the time, not to mention Machiavelli's background, it being written as a back-handed job application makes even more sense.

Fujikoma, you have stumbled into a group of some of the most intelligent people on the planet. I only have a 9th grade education and I only hang out here to pick up chicks.

Fujikoma

I only have up to 10th grade, got my GED and got out before the fuckers strung me up for behavior problems.

The chick thing was only a joke. I am the most happily married man alive, and intend to stay that way.
