The fact that every interesting recent thread has devolved into a pun war.

Well that's a bit strong actually, I don't think it was every recent interesting threads, that's Phox's words, but it makes for a good subject line.

The fact that every interesting thread in recent memory has devolved into a pun war.

Yeah it kind of gets bad when there's suddenly 3 in a row, that have nothing to do with the discussion at all (corn?), or when people jump in just to pile on more puns without furthering the discussion, that really really derails the thread.

Usually, a pun would be a one-off remark that punctuates the thread with a nice joke. It must not become the focus of the thread (unless it's a particularly good joke of course). When I do such a thing, I don't want people to focus on it, it's an interjection, brightens up the thread, maybe someone replies LOL, but then the discussion continues.

BTW the above is just "what details triple zero thinks shape a good thread", not me telling people what not to post, but something to, I dunno consider or think about. It's also the point of view of someone who really likes the occasional well-crafted pun.

And, this is really personal taste, but the recent "pun runs" have been particularly crappy and rehashing the same combinations of play-on-words over and over again: corn/maize/ear/kernel has been done many times, so have most music-related puns, as well as cheese-related puns, shoe-related puns and body-part-related puns. I don't think it's too much to ask for A LITTLEBIT OF ORIGINALITY PLEASE. Otherwise it's not even a funny joke, but more like one of those "c-c-c-combo memes", like you see on 4Chan or Reddit*.

^^^ The above is telling me what to post, because if you can't post original jokes, then :| on you!

*On 4Chan they are okay because it's a sewer anyway, and on Reddit it's okay because their comment system is threaded like a tree, so a discussion can branch off into people riffing puns off eachother to their hearts desire, while others can continue on-topic discussion. PD doesn't have a threaded comment system, which has other advantages, but also means that a discussion can be derailed much easier.

also I'm aware of the irony that I sorta derailed this thread by posting this. but that's always the case on subjects like this

actually wait a minute I'll just not post it and post it as a separate new thread cause it's not like you need the exact context anyway (otherwise click the quote link) (hey actually this is sort of a cool trick to branch a discussion)

This is pretty much how I approach it.  Look, I think we can all agree that we, as individuals, have different styles and personas.  I'm the pun guy (and the drug guy too I guess, a bad combination indeed, eh?), or one of the pun guys.  It's what I do.  I'll interject a pun in a thread if I think it's particularly good. I might also interject one in a thread that's getting too serious or heated, just to maybe lighten it up a bit (which usually never works).

But the one thing I always try very hard to do is NOT post them in serious threads.  For example, I'd never post a pun in any of TGRR's series threads.  I certainly wouldn't post them in an OKM rant, unless it has gone off the rails and everyone has devolved into nonsense.  I've also always made it a point to not post puns in TFY,S, again, unless the thread has gone to hell and there isn't any serious discussions going on anymore.

Of course, I'm not perfect, and I'm sure I fuck up now and again, but all you have to do is tell me.

But the other thing is I don't really intend for my puns to be the beginning of a pun-off.  Unless, the thread is specifically for that.  Also, at the risk of sounding like a pun elitist, they kinda lose their punch if they happen too often.  I do have a couple of pun threads around, one here in AT and one in B or B.  In fact, the pun thread in Bring or Brag originally was started after a couple of my puns rubbed some people the wrong way because they interrupted their thread, so originally if I saw something and thought of a good pun, I'd just link to that thread in the pun thread and post the pun their.

So, I would suggest if someone has a real itch to pun-off, start a different thread or maybe take it to the pun thread.  Puns are funny but too much isn't necessarily better and they also aren't worth pissing people off.

Anyway, that's my 2 1/2 cents.

I think it was the holocaust angle. Kinda tasteless, even for a pun.

Nah, holocaust seems to be fair game here, just like randomly pissing on the French, the combination with a failed joke is what made is kinda meh, cause then all you have left is the holocaust remark, which even though we know Lies doesn't mean anything by it, leaves a meh reaction.

The only thing that bugs me is when there's a run of like 3 or 4 puns

and then a greater number posts complaining about how the thread's jacked and dead

because honestly, BOTH groups are participating in a threadjack, it's just that one is doing as a sort of "this is the last jack" jack

if the topic is interesting enough to be discussed, people will keep talking about it. Just because somebody makes a bad joke doesn't mean that we have to stop talking. We can move past that.

No, it was just a weak attempt.

OP:

Fine.  I won't make jokes.  Hope you all die of phossy jaw.

Cuddlefish

I only pun as a reactionary measure. I consider puns a threat to my way of life, and I will return fire if my people are threatened. Further more, I have no qualms with using the same dispicable weapons used on me, on my enemies.

I realize this statement may incite an arms race, but we have enough people running around on their legs, anyhow.

Absolutely. That's why I first tried it (in parentheses), and then, after typing up most of the OP, decided I might as well cut/paste the whole bit into a new thread.

If disrupting a discussion by piling on in a pun run with canned play-on-words is the only way you can make jokes, then, as the OP states, that is not what triple zero believes shapes a good discussion--nothing more.

Seems to me, however, this is not what you did, so I don't think the OP even applies to you.

Also, chill the fuck out, I think what I wrote was clear enough and if you have a problem, then please to state it in a way that does not deliberately misinterprets me.

I'm pissed off because apparently there has been a streak of pun threadjacking that I wasn't aware of, and people choose to crawl up my ass when I do it a little bit.  I was done after two.
