Jesus fucking christ, do people in Australia think that kind of shit is OK? Wow.

Seems that Australia is the last bastion of 'blackface' shows. [shudder]

No, Japan and China still love the blackface/gollywog stuff. Of its just the tip of the iceberg of a great many things in their culture that would be considered pretty offensive over here.
Yeah, that would explain this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LfX8pOiuWFc

Oh wow. At first I thought it might be a sign of affection in warped views, and then the trumpet fell apart.

Mind Officially Blown.
- So the New World Order does not actually exist?
- Oh it exists, and how!
Ask the slaves whose labour built the White House;
Ask the slaves of today tied down to sweatshops and brothels to escape hunger;
Ask most women, second class citizens, in a pervasive rape culture;
Ask the non-human creatures who inhabit the planet:
whales, bears, frogs, tuna, bees, slaughtered farm animals;
Ask the natives of the Americas and Australia on whose land
you live today, on whose graves your factories, farms and neighbourhoods stand;
ask any of them this, ask them if the New World Order is true;
they'll tell you plainly: the New World Order... is you!

Have a go on this then. Not racist, but certainly a horrible act of gratuitous violence against music itself.

Mind Officially Blown.

Apart from musical taste, is this actually "wrong" or even racist, though?

If he's impersonating Louis Armstrong, painting his face is pretty much the same thing as an Elvis impersonator wearing a wig. He's not ridiculing black people, just a guy trying real hard to look like Armstrong.

I don't think it's racist, not really, because he does such a good impression of Armstrong, and he obviously didn't pick him because of his colour, but because he obviously loves his music.
Japanese are strange like that with their impersonators. They have most of the worlds Elvis impersonators there too. It's like a National Sport.

I don't think it's racist, personally. It doesn't perpetuate stereotypes, the guy didn't do anything particularly mocking (well, except maybe the trumpet thing, but I think that was more offensive to musicians than black people), and there was no "oh look, he's in blackface, how hilarious!", at least not that I could tell. But yeah, different culture standards. That wouldn't fly in the U.S. of A.

BadBeast

Plus,the Japanese haven't had very much cultural crossover with Black people. If they were going to do a racist thing, they would target the Chinese or the Koreans, I would have thought. They have had lots of cultural conflict there in the not so distant past.

Elder Iptuous

I would disagree with that...
the Japanese think very low of black people).  in my experience they believe they are a superior race in general, but they put blacks at the bottom of their hierarchy.
i think their lack of crossover might account for the lack of vitriol in their bigotry (as there hasn't ever been threat/fear), but them seeing black people as clownish doesn't really make them innocent of racism.

BadBeast

I suppose if you look at it like that, then they are racist. However I don't think the Louis Armstrong impersonator was even thinking of race here. He did his act completely like a tribute, rather than as a pisstake. I didn't get the slightest impression that race was being played for laughs, or as a belittlement.
Which I totally did with the Australian clip.

This. Not that you don't have a valid point, Ippy, but it seems less like racism and more like a tribute than the Australian thing did. Not that there isn't something inherently ridiculous about seeing a Japanese dude in blackface, but... you know.
